The Digimon Fusion Loader is a handheld electronic game produced by Bandai Asia for Digimon Xros Wars. It is an international adaptation of the Japanese Digimon Xros Loader, released in Asian territories in November 2012 with an English-language interface.
Although it retains the general appearance, sound-reloading function and infrared connectivity of the Japanese Xros Loader, the Fusion Loader replaces its color display with monochrome sprites and features a substantially different card- and deck-based battle system. The player collects Digimon Data Cards, assembles a Digimon legion and fights the Bagra Army across two maps of the Digital World.
Versions[edit]
The Digimon Fusion Loader was released in two color variants:
| Version | Color | Partner Digimon |
|---|---|---|
| Shoutmon ver. | Red | Shoutmon |
| Greymon ver. | Blue | Greymon |
Both versions contain the same overall selection of obtainable Digimon. Their principal difference is their color and designated Partner Digimon.
Gameplay[edit]
The player assumes the role of a General commanding a Digimon legion against the Bagra Army. Each legion consists of a Partner Digimon and a deck of collected Digimon Data Cards. The campaign is divided into two maps containing ten regular Areas and two Secret Areas.
Movement through each Area is registered through the device's built-in walking detector. As the player advances, enemy patrols and commanders appear. Defeating an Area's Boss completes that Area and opens further portions of the map.
Controls[edit]
The device has four operating buttons labelled A–D and an Execute Button labelled E. The operating buttons are used to navigate menus, inspect cards and select commands, while the Execute Button confirms selections and performs actions during battles.
The reverse of the device contains its power switch, reset button, speaker and reloading microphone. An infrared transceiver allows two Fusion Loaders to communicate.
Collecting Digimon[edit]
Digimon other than the player's Partner Digimon are stored as Digimon Data Cards. Additional cards can be obtained by exposing the reloading microphone to compatible sounds or music. The generated Digimon depends on the sound data recognized by the device.
Collected cards contain the Digimon's Attack, Defense and Speed statistics, Attribute, Effect, cost and other information used in battle. Cards can be inspected and organized through the device's card menus.
The Card Vending Machine provides another means of obtaining Data Cards. One card can be acquired by exchanging five points of Battle Power.
Deck[edit]
The player can select up to forty collected Digimon Data Cards to form a deck. Cards assigned to the deck are shuffled and drawn during battle, while the Partner Digimon remains the central member and commander of the player's legion.
Cards removed from the deck remain in the collection and can be traded to another Fusion Loader. A card currently assigned to a deck cannot be traded.
Areas[edit]
The main campaign consists of two maps:
- Map 1 contains Areas 1–7 and Secret Area 1.
- Map 2 contains Areas 8–10 and Secret Area 2.
Each Area has an associated Attribute and culminates in a Boss battle. Defeated enemy Leaders and Bosses are registered in the device and subsequently become available as opponents in Practice Mode.
Encounters[edit]
Activating the walking detector advances the player's Digimon through the current Area. An alarm sounds when an enemy legion is encountered. The player can begin the battle with the Execute Button or escape with the B Button, although escaping increases the distance remaining in the Area.
Enemy encounters may consist of either a three-Digimon patrol or a legion led by a commander. A patrol is defeated by eliminating all three enemies, while a commander battle is won by reducing the commander's Defense to zero. Commanders strengthen the other Digimon in their legion and can participate directly in the battle.
Battle system[edit]
At the beginning of each round, up to six Data Cards are drawn from the player's deck. The player spends Battle Energy to summon Digimon from their hand into one of three positions on the battlefield. A summoned Digimon normally attacks the enemy occupying the position directly opposite it.
Battle Energy is consumed when cards and commands are used. Once per round, the player can restore a variable amount of energy through the Battle Energy Supplement Slot.
Combat is determined primarily by three statistics:
- Attack: Determines the damage inflicted on an opponent.
- Defense: Determines how much damage a Digimon can withstand.
- Speed: Influences the order in which attacks are performed.
A summoned Digimon returns to card form when its Defense reaches zero. Under certain circumstances, a defeated Data Card may be deleted from the deck and replaced by a Question Mark Card. Question Mark Cards provide no useful Digimon in battle and can be replaced through the device's card-management functions.
The battle ends when either the enemy commander or the player's Partner Digimon has its Defense reduced to zero.
Attributes[edit]
Digimon and battlefields are assigned Attributes. Attribute compatibility can increase or decrease the effectiveness of an attack, while a Digimon fighting in an Area matching its own Attribute receives an additional advantage.
The eight battlefield Attributes are:
- Light
- Darkness
- Fire
- Water
- Grass
- Earth
- Wind
- Machine
Some Digimon have no Attribute and are not naturally affected by Attribute compatibility, although an Attribute can be temporarily assigned through a card Effect.
Interrupt[edit]
During an allied Digimon's attack, the player can activate Interrupt to use a Data Card remaining in their hand. The selected card's Effect can increase Attack, Defense or Speed, change an Attribute or activate a DigiFusion. Only one card can be used for each Interrupt.
DigiFusion[edit]
The Partner Digimon can combine with compatible Digimon from the player's hand or battlefield through DigiFusion. Performing a DigiFusion consumes five points of Battle Energy and changes the Partner Digimon into the corresponding combined form. The DigiFusion remains active during subsequent rounds.
If more than one compatible component is available, multiple cards can be selected for combinations that require several Digimon. DigiFusion can also appear as an Effect used to strengthen ordinary summoned Digimon.
Practice Mode[edit]
Practice Mode allows the player to rematch enemy Leaders and Bosses previously encountered during the campaign. The player selects the opponent and one of the eight battlefield Attributes before beginning the battle.
Connection[edit]
Two Digimon Fusion Loaders can communicate through infrared for battles and card trading.
During a connection battle, each player selects three Data Cards from their deck. These Digimon fight before the players' Partner Digimon confront one another. The device records the number of connection victories and the player's winning percentage.
Data Cards not currently assigned to a deck can also be transferred between devices. The sending player selects the card, while the other Fusion Loader is placed in Receive Mode.
