Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (デジモンアドベンチャー02 THE BEGINNING Dejimon Adobenchā 02 The Beginning) is a feature film. It is a sequel to both the television series Digimon Adventure 02 and the film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.

Summary[edit]
Premise[edit]
In February 2012,[1] a giant Digitama appears in the sky.[2] Motomiya Daisuke and his group of Chosen Children intervene to save a young man, Ohwada Lui, from falling from Tokyo Tower. Lui claims to them that he was the world's first Chosen Child.[3]

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning is the fourth major sequel production to Digimon Adventure, starring the cast of the earlier sequel series Digimon Adventure 02. It is set in 2012, ten years after Adventure 02 and two years after the preceding film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.
Drama CDs[edit]
Three audio dramas tying into The Beginning were distributed digitally via redemption codes given to screening attendees during certain weeks of the film's theatrical run,[7] and were later included in CD form as a bonus feature in the Japanese deluxe Blu-ray release.[8]

Marketing[edit]
The Beginning—at the time, with no publicly revealed title—was first announced on August 1, 2021 at DigiFes 2021, alongside Digimon Ghost Game, in the form of a teaser poster with a simple, monochromatic style.[4] A teaser trailer was also released, consisting of narration from Motomiya Daisuke while the teaser poster is shown.[2]
The film's primary creative staff and key art of the main cast were announced and revealed at DigiFes 2022;[1] before DigiFes itself, Kinoshita Yōsuke appeared on a pre-event stream on July 20 to preview redacted scripts and storyboards from the ramen restaurant scene early in the film, during which its title was revealed.[9] Several minutes from the beginning of the film were also shown at DigiFes 2022, depicting the same events described by Daisuke in the teaser trailer and the Chosen Children's first encounter with Ohwada Lui.[3]
On March 25, 2023, Toei Animation announced that The Beginning would be released on October 27, 2023, and released a teaser trailer and a second teaser poster.[5] The film's trailer and poster were both released during DigiFes 2023 on July 30, 2023.[6]
In the lead-up to the release of The Beginning, Tokyo MX rebroadcast a selection of episodes of Digimon Adventure 02 from July 4, 2023 onward.[10]

The Beginning premiered at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater on October 5, 2023,[11] prior to its general Japanese theatrical opening on October 27.
Revisions[edit]
Japanese home media releases of The Beginning use a print of the film that has been revised from the original theatrical release. Among its changes to the original footage are corrections to most (but not all) instances of erroneously colored D-3s:
- The screen bezels of Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, Takeru and Hikari's D-3s were white in the theatrical print, and were corrected to black in the home media print.
- The theatrical print depicted Ichijouji Ken's D-3 with a completely different color scheme: it had black grips and a white body, matching the other five Chosen Children's D-3s. The home media print corrects it to its standard gray-body/black-grip coloration from previous Digimon Adventure media.
As of June 2024, US home media and streaming releases of The Beginning—both the subtitled release of the Japanese version, and the American English dub—continue to use the original theatrical print of the film, and so still have the miscolored D-3s.[12]
