Toei Animation Co., Ltd. (東映アニメーション株式会社, Tōei Animēshon Kabushiki Gaisha) is a Japanese animation studio and is primarily controlled by Toei Co., Ltd.
History[edit]
The company was originally founded in Shinjuku in 1948 under the name Nihon Doga Co., Ltd.; soon afterwards in August 1952 it changed its corporate name to Nichido Eiga. In 1956, Toei Co., Ltd. purchased the studio and became one of its subsidiaries, now going under the name Toei Doga Co., Ltd. Their mascot is the cat Pero, from the company's film adaptation of Puss in Boots, which debuted at the 1969 Toei Cartoon Festival. In 1998, the studio's Japanese name was changed to Toei Animation Co., Ltd. In 2000, Toei Animation had its initial public offering; major shareholders include not only Toei Co., Ltd., but also Bandai Namco Holdings, TV Asahi Corporation, Fuji Media Holdings and Sony Pictures.
