Battle!! Digital Monsters (激鬥!!數碼暴龍) is a Hong Kong manhua illustrated by Yu Yuen-wong and published by Rightman Publishing Ltd. in the fortnightly CO-CO! Magazine. The special chapter and Rounds 1–13 credit 柴政文 as the scriptwriter, while Rounds 14–24 and the Final Round credit 彭子傑. The latter is also credited in English as Pang Tsz Kit.Based on the Digital Monster virtual pets, it features an original story centered on Ma Chi Lung and his partner Dark Tyranomon, who evolves into Metal Tyranomon.
The manhua primarily draws on the Digital Monster Ver. 5, with Digimon from earlier versions of the original virtual pet also appearing in its second part.
Overview[edit]
The series is divided into two parts:
- Battle!! Digital Monsters –Digimon Thunderbolt Tournament– (激鬥!!數碼暴龍 ―數碼暴龍雷霆大賽―), released as six supplementary booklets distributed with issues 20–25 of CO-CO! Magazine. An additional special chapter brings this part to seven chapters.
- Battle!! Digital Monsters –Perfect Level Decisive Battle Chapter– (激鬥!!數碼暴龍 ―完全體決戰篇―), consisting of 24 numbered chapters designated as "Rounds", followed by a "Final Round". Together, the two parts comprise 32 chapters.
The series was also released in collected volumes. Promotional notices accompanying the serialized chapters advertised advance sales of the first volume at a signing event on February 22, 1999, and the second volume at another signing event on July 16, 1999. The third volume was advertised for publication on December 31, 1999, while the fourth volume was published in 2000.
Story[edit]
Middle school students Ching Ching and Shing Chai are selected to participate in the "Digimon Thunderbolt Tournament". However, the competition takes place in the Digital World, where the Digimon raised in their virtual pets become living creatures. To escape, the participants must defeat their opponents; those who fail will remain trapped there forever. Ma Chi Lung and the other competitors must battle their way through the tournament alongside their Digimon.
Development[edit]
Before joining CO-CO! Magazine, Yu Yuen-wong worked as a comics assistant at Jade Dynasty. At the time, the magazine's editors were looking for an artist to produce a comic based on Digimon. After encountering Yu's artwork, they recruited him for the project, and Battle!! Digital Monsters became his first work as a principal artist for the magazine.[1]
The manhua was licensed by Bandai and developed to promote the Digital Monster virtual pets. It features an original storyline, whereas Yu's subsequent Digimon manhua adapted the television anime under license from Toei Animation. Yu later returned to an original story based on a virtual pet with D-Cyber.[1]
