Digimon Xros Wars (デジモンクロスウォーズ Dejimon Kurosu Wōzu) is a manga illustrated by Nakashima Yuuki and published by Shueisha in V Jump. Based on the premise and characters of the anime of the same name, it follows a separate continuity, with a different account of the war against the Bagra Army, the history of the Digital World, and the relationships between its human and Digimon characters.
The main story consists of 21 chapters collected in four volumes. Two special chapters, "Xros Hustle!! The Great Digimon Athletic Meet!!" and "Xros School!! A New Digimon School Term!!?", are also included in the third volume. An additional online chapter, "Bonus Track", was published after the conclusion of the main story.

Overview[edit]
The manga shares the anime's initial premise, following Kudou Taiki and Shoutmon as they establish Xros Heart and fight against the Bagra Army. However, it develops a separate storyline, substantially changing the setting, the backgrounds and motivations of several characters, and the course of the war.
The conflict involves not only the human-led armies, but also Homeostasis, the Royal Knights, and the Seven Great Demon Lords. Bagramon's rebellion is rooted in his rejection of the Digital World's governing system and his belief that human hearts have become irreparably consumed by despair. Meanwhile, Dark Knightmon pursues his own ambitions through the manipulation of Amano Nene and her younger sister, Amano Kotone.
Rather than adapting the anime's Seven Kingdoms storyline, the manga continues its own conflict across the Digital World and the Real World, culminating in the awakening of Zeed Millenniumon and a final battle against Ultimate Chaosmon.
Synopsis[edit]
Kudou Taiki, a boy who cannot ignore someone in need, hears a mysterious melody and the voice of a dying Shoutmon. When he chooses to save him, a Xros Loader appears and absorbs Shoutmon's fading melody. Taiki and his friends, Hinomoto Akari and Tsurugi Zenjirou, are then transported to the Digital World, where they find themselves surrounded by soldiers of the Bagra Army.
With Shoutmon and Ballistamon's assistance, Taiki discovers the power of DigiXros, combining the two Digimon into Shoutmon X2 to defeat Mach Leomon. He becomes a General and establishes Xros Heart, joining Shoutmon's struggle to protect his companions and become the Digital World's king.
Their journey brings them into contact with two other human Generals: Aonuma Kiriha, the leader of Blue Flare, and Amano Nene, the leader of Twilight. Although their aims initially place them at odds, their conflicts become intertwined with the ambitions of Dark Knightmon and the Bagra Army.
Nene cooperates with Dark Knightmon in the hope of awakening her younger sister, Amano Kotone, who has fallen into a deep sleep. Dark Knightmon, however, intends to exploit Kotone's powerful Xros Code by making Shademon take control of her. To protect her sister, Nene forces Shademon to DigiXros with herself instead, becoming Shademon (Nene Ver.). Kotone subsequently joins Xros Heart and becomes Sparrowmon's General, while the allied forces seek a way to rescue Nene.
The conflict eventually extends into the Real World. During the group's return there, Wizarmon uses his magic to disguise the Digimon as humans. The war reaches Odaiba, where the protagonists confront Blastmon before returning to the Digital World.
Behind the war lies Bagramon's rejection of the system maintained by Homeostasis. Once a high-ranking Angel Digimon, he came to believe that a world influenced by human hearts had become irreparably corrupted by despair. His ultimate objective is to awaken Zeed Millenniumon, eradicating all life to end the suffering he believes cannot otherwise be overcome.
During the confrontation with Tactimon, Shoutmon X7 is defeated and separates into its component Digimon. The protagonists respond by evolving their partners, bringing together Omega Shoutmon, Zeke Greymon, Atlur Ballistamon, Yaeger Dorulumon, and Raptor Sparrowmon as Shoutmon EX6. Supported by Shooting Starmon, they defeat Tactimon.
Shademon subsequently betrays Dark Knightmon and forces a DigiXros between him and Millenniumon, creating Zeed Millenniumon. Shademon and Nene become incorporated into its Moon Millenniumon component. The efforts of Kotone and her allies restore Nene's hope, allowing Shademon to evolve into Luminamon while still fused with her.
The forced separation of Zeed Millenniumon frees Nene but gives rise to Ultimate Chaosmon. Having witnessed the hope that remains within human hearts, Bagramon assists the protagonists and sacrifices himself. Through a Final Xros, Shoutmon becomes Shoutmon X7: Superior Mode and defeats Ultimate Chaosmon, bringing the war to an end. Dark Knightmon survives, is redeemed, and departs on a journey through the Digital World.
Setting[edit]
The manga's Digital World is divided into Zones, with Code Crowns and Xros Loaders playing important roles in travel and warfare. However, its governing system and history differ from those of the anime.
Yggdrasill formerly administered the Digital World, but attempted to destroy the Real World. Following its defeat, Homeostasis was created as a calmer and more protective successor. Homeostasis governs the Digital World from the Realm of God, with the Royal Knights and an army of Angel Digimon serving under it.
The state of human hearts influences the Digital World. Negative emotions and despair contribute to the increasing number of Dark Digimon, leading Bagramon to question the justice of the system maintained by Homeostasis. After challenging it, he is cast out and reconstructs the damaged right side of his body using the remains of Yggdrasill's server tree. He subsequently establishes the Bagra Army and begins his war against Homeostasis and the Royal Knights.
The Seven Great Demon Lords form a separate organization opposed to the Royal Knights. Most refuse to join Bagramon's war, with Lilithmon being the sole exception. Lucemon declines Bagramon's request for assistance and instead observes the consequences of his plan.
Unlike the anime, the Digital World is never reorganized into the seven Lands governed by the Death Generals. The story continues to take place across Zones, including several locations absent from the anime series.
Differences from the anime[edit]
Although the manga shares the anime's initial premise and many of its characters, its setting, characterizations, and storyline diverge substantially. Notable differences include:
- Mach Leomon replaces Mad Leomon as the Bagra Army commander encountered at the beginning of the story.
- Amano Nene is the General of Twilight and has a younger sister, Amano Kotone, rather than a younger brother, Amano Yuu. Kotone becomes a General and partners with Sparrowmon.
- Nene's involvement with Dark Knightmon centers on his attempt to exploit Kotone's Xros Code. Nene protects her sister by becoming fused with Shademon herself.
- During the protagonists' stay in the Real World, Wizarmon disguises Xros Heart's Digimon as humans.
- Bagramon receives a more detailed account of his life before his fall and is portrayed more sympathetically than in the anime. His ultimate goal is to awaken Zeed Millenniumon to eradicate all life, believing that this will free it from suffering.
- Tactimon is portrayed as significantly more honorable than his anime counterpart.
- Blastmon, rather than Tactimon, is fought in Odaiba.
- Dark Knightmon survives and is redeemed at the end of the story. He is rarely shown separated into Skull Knightmon and Deadly Axemon, with these components appearing in Nene's explanation of his nature and following his redemption.
- The DigiMemory order from the anime does not appear. Homeostasis and the Royal Knights fulfill a similar role in opposing Bagramon and supporting the protagonists.
- The Seven Great Demon Lords are presented as an organization opposed to the Royal Knights. Most refuse to join Bagramon's war, with Lilithmon being the sole exception. Lilithmon is explicitly identified as a member of the group.
- Lucemon acts independently rather than serving under Lilithmon, while Leviamon is not presented as a heroic ally.
- The Death Generals do not appear, and the Digital World is not reorganized into seven Lands. Many locations from the anime are omitted or depicted differently.
- Ballistamon, Dorulumon, Sparrowmon, and Starmons receive evolved forms: Atlur Ballistamon, Yaeger Dorulumon, Raptor Sparrowmon, and Shooting Starmon, respectively.
- Shoutmon EX6 appears as a combination of the protagonists' evolved Digimon.
- The final battle is against Ultimate Chaosmon rather than Bagramon. Bagramon joins forces with Xros Heart and sacrifices himself to help defeat it, while Shoutmon assumes his Shoutmon X7: Superior Mode form.
The manga also includes homages to earlier Digimon works, including Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01 and Digimon Savers.

- The author of the manga, Nakashima Yuuki, revealed at some point that there were plenty of side stories that he wasn't able to introduce because of time constraints. This extra content include a chapter that takes place between volumes 1 and 2, that would give more depth to Nene and Kiriha's relationship, a story about Zenjirou and Kotone's efforts while Taiki and the others were in the Real World, an extra story with Beelzebumon and Mervamon, a chronicle where they would travel all across the Digital World to find the Royal Knights, a tale about how Bagramon and the Three Head Officers met each other, and even with Dark Knightmon, among other scenarios.
