Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time (デジモンクロスウォーズ 時を駆ける少年ハンターたち, Dejimon Kurosu Wōzu Toki wo Kakeru Shounen Hantā-tachi), popularly and unofficially known as Digimon Xros Wars Hunters (デジモンクロスウォーズハンターズ, Dejimon Kurosu Wōzu Hantāzu), is the third and final season of Digimon Xros Wars (Dub: Mys-Digimon Xros Wars: Hunter Boys Crossing Time). At some point, it was considered a new series sequel to the original by Toei Animation[1][2] while eventually Toei ended up considering it as part of Xros Wars, and it is catalogued as a separate series by Crunchyroll[3] and the Malaysian Rental DVD Box set[4]. It aired on October 2, 2011 on TV Asahi and was broadcast on Sundays from 6:30AM (UTC +9). The title may be a reference to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 「時をかける少女, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo」, possibly playing as a tribute to its director Hosoda Mamoru, known for his contributions to Digimon Adventure.

History[edit]

News regarding this series first emerged in the October 2011 edition of V Jump, where it revealed the main characters along with their Partner Digimon and that the setting would be the space between the Real World and the Digital World. Later, the September 2011 monthly edition of Newtype revealed the cast for the series, also claiming that the main protagonists of the previous series would serve as the Digimon Hunters.

The cast was also included in the November 2011 edition of V Jump in addition to mentioning that the Digimon adopted from the winning entries from the 2011 Original Digimon Contest would make future appearances in the series.

With Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time, instead of having a Series Composer planning the series, the producer was in charge of the overall planning, after finishing that plan he would request a scriptwriter to make the scenario. Sanjou Riku, the series composer of the first season in charge of its 54 episodes, was given the title of Main Writer. His tasks didn't change much as he was still helping with the long-term story, just not as a Series Composer.

Story[edit]

The battle that took place in the Digital World had ended in victory for the humans and Digimon, who joined forces. A year on since that battle...

Akashi Tagiru, a member of the “Xros Heart” street basketball team, has aimed to surpass Kudou Taiki, his senpai whom he respects, and his classmate, Amano Yuu, to become the top star of the team someday. But, some mysterious youths suddenly appear before Taiki, who was spending peaceful days. They leave behind a significant warning, “From now on, whatever happens in this town, don't interfere”, and then leave...

Tagiru, who is completely unaware of the unusual phenomena occurring in town, visits the game center one day. Then, Tagiru witnesses a strange phenomenon, it was as if the flow of time had become out of the ordinary. Furthermore, there is a sign of someone wriggling in the vicinity, but... Having heard the voice of someone injured, Tagiru enters “DigiQuartz” due to a distortion in space. There, it is a world where time flows at a different rate to the Real World. Inside DigiQuartz, what Tagiru saw was the sight of the three of the boys and a girl hunting monsters called Digimon. They were the mysterious youths who appeared to warn Taiki, it was the three of Ryouma, Ren and Airu.

Having come across Gumdramon, the owner of the voice speaking at the game center, Tagiru saves Gumdramon, who was nearly hunted by Ryouma and the others. Tagiru gets along with Gumdramon straight away, and they decide to participate in the Digimon Hunt. Tagiru, who visited the Watchmaker’s on the outskirts which was becoming a rumor for the Digimon Hunters, somehow receives a Xros Loader from the suspicious Watchmaker.

Tagiru, who arrived at DigiQuartz, has an encounter with Metal Tyranomon. Although they immediately try to partake in the Digimon Hunt, Tagiru and Gumdramon are in a big crisis, combined with Metal Tyranomon’s counterattack. Then, Gumdramon super-evolves to Arresterdramon due to his Xros Loader, which began to shine! He defeats Metal Tyranomon with overwhelming power, and they both succeed in their first ever Hunt.

The young Hunters hunt Digimon that appear one after the other in the Real World, and so Tagiru, Taiki and Yuu’s new adventure had begun!!

Trivia[edit]

  • Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time was a nominee for the 2012 International Emmy Kids Awards for "Best Animation", but lost to The Amazing World of Gumball.[5]
  • At the "Hypnos Meeting 2019", when asked what would have happened if he had made an arc for Hunters in the manga, Nakashima Yuuki stated that he feels that the beginning would be close to the anime, but that he would like to take the opportunity to have characters like Hinomoto Akari and Tsurugi Zenjirou becoming more and more involved from the start.[6]
