Digimon Next (デジモンネクスト, Dejimon Nekusuto) is a manga illustrated by Okano Takeshi and published by Shueisha. It is the second Digimon manga to be serialized in V Jump, following Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01. The series consists of 25 chapters collected into four volumes.
Story[edit]
Tatsuno Tsurugi and his partner, Agumon, become involved in a struggle to save the Digital World from Barbamon and his army, the Commandments. Joined by other human Tamers and their Digimon, they oppose Barbamon's efforts to gather the eight DigiMemories and create a new digital lifeform capable of remaking the world.
Overview[edit]
The story connects the raising of Digimon through virtual pets with a network game through which human Tamers interact with their partners. Tsurugi's involvement brings him into contact with a Digital World whose inhabitants face persecution and destruction at the hands of the Commandments.
Tsurugi and Agumon are joined by Inui Yuu and Gaomon, and Kitajima Ami and Pitchmon. Another Tamer, Kahara Shou, initially opposes them alongside his partner, Peckmon, after falling under Barbamon's influence.
The children's partners are Illegals, Digimon distinguished by hexagonal markings and unusual abilities. Illegals can arise when a human Tamer's information is incorporated into a Digimon during the network game's certification process. Their existence connects the conflict in the Digital World with the relationships between humans and their partners.
Barbamon directs the Commandments in a campaign to obtain the eight DigiMemories. His forces include the Three Commanders, who lead powerful Digimon against those resisting his rule. Behind his campaign lies his connection to Yggdrasill, the entity governing the Digital World, with which he has fused.
The children also encounter Mikihara Norn, a mysterious girl held captive by Barbamon. Norn is revealed to be a part of Yggdrasill's consciousness, separated from it to investigate the meaning of the bonds between humans and Digimon.
As the conflict escalates, Agumon and Gaomon attain the forms of Victory Greymon and Z'd Garurumon through the Digimon Twin Digivice. These Digimon are Arbitrators, safeguards created to oppose Yggdrasill should it become corrupted. Their role places them in direct opposition to the power Barbamon has acquired.
The final conflict centers on NEO, a digital lifeform created by combining Pitchmon with the eight DigiMemories. Its appearance brings Barbamon's plan to remake the Digital World to its culmination, forcing the children and their partners to fight for the world's future.
Development[edit]
According to Okano Takeshi, Digimon Next was originally intended to be a manga adaptation of Digimon Savers. However, a delay in the start of the anime's broadcast led to the manga being developed as an independent series instead.[1]
