Appmon Data Lab (アプモンデータラボ, Apumon Dēta Rabo) is a video game.
It was a free official companion application for the Digimon Universe Appli Monsters multimedia project, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It provided access to news and information about the project, an encyclopedia of Appmon Chips, chip-registration functions, and missions connected to the Digimon Universe Appli Monsters Nintendo 3DS game.
The Android version began distribution on October 17, 2016, although its formal release was announced by Bandai Namco Entertainment on November 11.[1] An iOS version was released subsequently. The service was terminated on July 31, 2018.
Overview[edit]
Appmon Data Lab served as a mobile gateway to the official Appmon Project portal. Its home screen displayed recent announcements and promotional material related to the anime, games, toys, music, and other parts of the project.
Users could create an account or log into an existing account, allowing Appmon Chips to be registered and used in missions. The application used the smartphone's camera to read the QR codes printed on physical Appmon Chips and add them to the user's collection.
Although classified as a mobile game, it primarily functioned as an information, collection, and promotional application rather than as a standalone game.
Features[edit]
Appmon Chip Encyclopedia[edit]
The Appmon Chip Encyclopedia (アプモンチップ図鑑, Apumon Chippu Zukan) contains information about the Appmon Chips released as part of the franchise. Scanning a chip with the smartphone's camera registers it in the player's collection.
The encyclopedia records the individual versions of each chip, including variants of the same Appmon with different rarities or illustrations. Each registered entry displays information such as:
- The Appmon's name and illustration
- App
- Grade
- Attribute
- Special Move
- Profile
- Number of stars
- Chip rarity
- Number of copies registered
The collection can be browsed manually or searched using several filters. Players can search by keyword, Grade, Attribute, number of stars, and rarity, as well as limit the results to chips already in their possession.[1]
Missions[edit]
The Missions section uses Appmon registered in the encyclopedia. Players combine registered Appmon through Applink and Appgattai, accumulating Power (PW) according to the resulting combinations.
The accumulated Power can be used to enter time-limited challenges. Completing the specified challenge conditions grants rewards or entries into promotional campaigns. Some missions offered limited Appmon Chips through prize drawings.
Completing certain challenges also awarded a QR code for a Data Lab Ticket. These tickets could be scanned and used in the Nintendo 3DS game Digimon Universe Appli Monsters, creating a connection between the mobile application, physical Appmon Chips, and the game.[2]
The first version of the mission campaign tasked users with accumulating Power through Applink and Appgattai combinations for the opportunity to obtain a limited UGR-rarity Dogatchmon chip. The campaign ran from October 7 to December 26, 2016.
News and external content[edit]
The application provided access to news and several sections of the official Appmon portal. Its recommended-content menu included links to:
- Games
- Anime information
- Music
- The official Twitter account
- The official YouTube channel
- A product and event calendar
Through these sections, users could follow updates relating to the television anime, the Nintendo 3DS game, toys, Appmon Chips, and other merchandise.
Release and termination[edit]
The Android version of Appmon Data Lab became available on October 17, 2016. Bandai Namco Entertainment publicly announced its release on November 11, describing it as the first official information application for Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.[1] The application was distributed free of charge.
At the time of the November announcement, an iOS version was stated to be planned for a later date.[3] It was subsequently made available through the Japanese App Store.
The application's online service ended on July 31, 2018. Because its encyclopedia, user accounts, chip registration, missions, and news sections depended upon the online Appmon portal, its primary functions became unavailable following the termination of the service.
