Appmon Project
The Appmon Project (アプモンプロジェクト, Apumon Purojekuto) is the multimedia project behind Digimon Universe Appli Monsters. It was launched jointly by Bandai, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Toei Animation in 2016. Conceived as a cross-media project, it encompasses the television anime, games, toys, a digital card game, manga, and other publications and merchandise.[1]
Development[edit]
Announcement[edit]
The three companies announced the project on 20 May 2016, with its launch planned for that autumn. Their announcement described Digimon Universe Appli Monsters as a new story following the lineage of the Digimon series. Further details were scheduled to be revealed at the Tokyo Toy Show on 9 June 2016.[1]
The project's premise centres on smartphone applications. According to the original announcement, these applications harbour artificial intelligence lifeforms called Appli Monsters (Appmon), with a different monster associated with each type of app. Artificial intelligence was identified as a central theme of the new story.[1]
Expansion across media[edit]
From its announcement, the project was planned to extend beyond television animation to toys, games, a digital card game, and magazines.[1] At the Tokyo Toy Show on 9 June 2016, Toei Animation presented a new visual for the anime and announced its principal cast and staff. The television series was scheduled to begin airing on TV Tokyo that October. Plans for manga in V Jump and Saikyō Jump were also announced.[2]
The series made Shinkai Haru and Gatchmon its central human–Appmon pair. The Appli Drive and Appmon Chip connected the anime's premise to the project's device and collectible toy lines.[2]
