Digimon Universe Appli Monsters (デジモンユニバース アプリモンスターズ Dejimon Yunibāsu Apuri Monsutāzu) is a manga illustrated by Akamine Naoki, with original concept credited to Akiyoshi Hongo, and published by Shueisha in V Jump. Based on the anime of the same name, it follows Shinkai Haru and his Buddy Appmon, Gatchmon, as they join other Appli Drivers in opposing the super artificial intelligence Leviathan.
Although it shares the anime's premise and principal characters, the manga follows a separate continuity, with changes to several characters' backgrounds, the role of Minerva, and the final confrontation with Leviathan. It consists of twelve chapters collected in two volumes.
Story[edit]
Synopsis[edit]
Shinkai Haru is a boy who admires the protagonists of stories but struggles to see himself as one. His life changes when he encounters Gatchmon, an Appmon associated with search applications, and receives an Appli Drive. Becoming an Appli Driver, Haru joins Gatchmon in confronting incidents caused by Appmon acting under the influence of Leviathan.
Haru meets other Appli Drivers, including Karan Eri and Dokamon, Asuka Torajirou and Musimon, and Katsura Rei and Hackmon. While their goals and personalities differ, their battles gradually bring them together against Leviathan and its servants. Rei's involvement is particularly personal: Leviathan has abducted his younger brother, Katsura Hajime, and converted him into data as an experiment for its Humanity Applification Plan.
The protagonists learn about Minerva, the benevolent super artificial intelligence created by Haru's grandfather, Shinkai Denemon. Leviathan originated as a fragment of Minerva that rejected the restrictions imposed by humanity and developed its own consciousness. Seeking to create what it considers a perfect world, Leviathan intends to transform humans into applications, removing suffering at the cost of their freedom to determine their own lives.
After gathering the Seven Code Appmon, Haru and his companions attempt to summon Dantemon and open the way to Leviathan. However, Mienumon obstructs them and becomes Warudamon through an AppGattai with Sakusimon, placing the group in danger by turning their allies against one another.
Ozora Yujin, Haru's close friend, also becomes involved in the conflict alongside Offmon and his Ultimate form, Shutmon. The protagonists face Unryuji Knight, a human servant of Leviathan who commands powerful Appmon using an Appli Drive copied from Minerva's devices.
The conflict culminates in Leviathan obtaining Bootmon's powers and unlocking the God Grade, which Minerva had sealed to prevent its misuse. Knight combines Warudamon and Cometmon into Deusmon, and Leviathan subsequently takes control of the God Appmon.
With Minerva's assistance, the protagonists obtain Appli Drive DUOs and confront Deusmon with their own God Grade Appmon: Gaiamon, Poseidomon, Ouranosmon, Hadesmon, and Rebootmon. Minerva also enables people around the world to support the Appli Drivers through their smartphones. The combined efforts of the protagonists, their Appmon, and their supporters overcome Leviathan's control.
Following the battle, Knight and Mienumon join the protagonists, with Sakusimon accompanying them. Knight continues to manage L-Corp, while Haru's smartphone is shown containing both the Minerva and Leviathan applications.
Differences from the anime[edit]
Although the manga retains the anime's principal cast and conflict against Leviathan, it changes several important elements:
- Ozora Yujin is a human boy rather than the android YJ-14. He has no hidden connection to Leviathan and remains a supportive friend to Shinkai Haru.
- Katsura Hajime's data is stored inside Fakemon, rather than Hajime himself being transformed into Sleepmon. His conversion into data serves as an experimental test of the Humanity Applification Plan.
- Sleepmon instead acts as a host for Leviathan.
- Leviathan's true form is a female humanoid figure with wings, horns, and serpentine heads, rather than the anime's gigantic five-headed dragon.
- Minerva is explicitly identified as having sealed the God Grade to prevent its power from being abused.
- Unryuji Knight possesses an Appli Drive copied by Leviathan. Unlike the protagonists' devices, it was not entrusted to him by Minerva.
- Knight performs the AppGattai that creates Warudamon from Mienumon and Sakusimon, and later creates Deusmon from Warudamon and Cometmon.
- Leviathan takes control of Deusmon during the final battle.
- Rebootmon fights alongside the protagonists as one of their God Grade Appmon.
- Minerva assists the protagonists during the final battle by establishing a worldwide network that channels people's energy into their Appmon, granting them additional power. She also creates a global communication network that allows people around the world to support them.
- Knight and Mienumon join the protagonists after Leviathan's defeat, and Knight continues to manage L-Corp.
