Katsura Hajime is Rei's younger brother who is said to have been kidnapped by Leviathan.
Profile[edit]
Hajime's mother died when he was very young, and he was subsequently raised by his older brother, Katsura Rei. Hajime cares deeply for Rei, and the two share a close bond. Unbeknownst to most people, Hajime is a child prodigy whose abilities surpass even Rei's. Because of his exceptional intelligence, he was targeted by Leviathan and forced to develop software on his behalf. Upon discovering Leviathan's true intentions, Hajime secretly rebelled by sending his creation away and hiding it from him.
Etymology[edit]
Despite not being written in kanji, Hajime can mean "one" (一) if viewed as a nanori reading. Together with Rei, which can mean "zero" (零), they are a reference to binary code. The surname Katsura possibly comes from Ray Kurzweil (レイ・カーツワイル Rei Kātsuwairu), author of The Singularity Is Near. Katsura also means "Cercidiphyllum japonicum". It might as well refer to the Katsura River or Katsurazawa Dam as a reference to the Net Ocean.

Anime[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Hajime was kidnapped and transformed into data by Leviathan, who wanted him to use his intelligence to create an app capable of starting any program. Hajime did this, and the Appmon connected to the app was Bootmon. When Hajime realized that Bootmon was part of Leviathan's plan to turn all humans into data, he programmed an emergency escape program into Bootmon and sent him away with instructions to hide. As punishment, Leviathan transformed him into a Sleepmon, and he remained in that state for several months. When Rei finally managed to rescue him, Hajime stayed asleep until the smell of burnt eggs triggered memories of mornings spent with his brother, allowing him to wake up. After awakening, he told the other Appli Drivers about Leviathan's plan. He and Rei then provided technical support for everyone in the field from a room in Kashiki Ai's bookstore.
Hajime was born in 2008. When his mother died, Hajime went to live with Rei, who hacked official records to prevent them from being separated. One day, they both received a strange message from Leviathan containing a puzzle. Rei took weeks to solve it, whereas Hajime needed only a few minutes. The message was actually part of a plan to lure a highly skilled individual like Hajime into a trap and force him to develop an Appmon capable of running any program: Bootmon. However, Hajime soon realized that Bootmon was part of Leviathan's plan to turn all humans into data, so he programmed an emergency escape program into Bootmon and sent him away with instructions to hide. Leviathan punished him by ordering Biomon to transform him into Sleepmon, a harmless Appmon. Hajime became the first human to successfully undergo such a transformation.
Sleepmon remained in Leviathan's custody until the summer of 2017, when Rei and Hackmon managed to infiltrate the maximum-security area of the L-Corp building and rescue him. However, his escape was also part of Leviathan's strategy. Rei cared for Sleepmon for several days, unable to find a way to wake him or restore him to human form, until the smell of a burnt omelet triggered Hajime's memories and allowed him to awaken. Hajime then revealed to Rei and his fellow Appli Drivers that Leviathan planned to convert humanity into digital applications and needed Bootmon to accomplish this. He and Rei subsequently provided technical support for the others from a room in Kashiki Ai's bookstore.
Hajime helped the Appli Drivers locate Bootmon, but every attempt to capture him failed. He then decided to modify the escape program he had installed in Bootmon, forcing him to travel to Gatchmon's location. However, YJ-14 infected Bootmon and used his powers to carry out Leviathan's plans, allowing Leviathan to materialize in the Real World. Hajime was not digitized because he was inside a room shielded from Leviathan's powers, enabling him to help the Appli Drivers contact Minerva. After Leviathan's defeat, Hajime resumed his normal life with Rei.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
In the manga, Hajime's data is stored inside Fakemon's body. In this continuity, it is revealed that he was converted into data by Leviathan on an experimental basis, serving as a beta test for the eventual execution of the Humanity Applification Plan.
