Shinkai Denemon is Haru's grandfather in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.
Profile[edit]
Denemon is Haru's grandfather. He is a brilliant scientist who is as eccentric as he is exuberant. A pioneer in artificial intelligence research, he developed Minerva, but is also indirectly responsible for the creation of Leviathan. His voice is recorded within the Appli Drive.
Etymology[edit]
The name Denemon is composed of the kanji for "electricity" (電), "defense" (衛), and "gate" (門). The "-mon" suffix is possibly a reference to Appmon. The surname Shinkai means "new ocean". Possibly a reference to the Net Ocean.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
In 1956, Denemon, then a young scholar, attended the first conference on artificial intelligence held at Dartmouth University in New Hampshire. The following year, he began work on a program he named Minerva. Minerva continued to develop over the years, and everything appeared to be proceeding smoothly until 2006, when Leviathan, a malevolent artificial intelligence born from Minerva herself, rebelled and escaped into the Internet Sea, posing a threat to all humanity.
Denemon attempted to thwart Leviathan's plans, but in retaliation, Leviathan repeatedly tried to kill him. Fearing that he would eventually be unable to escape, Denemon devised a contingency plan in case Leviathan succeeded. Unfortunately, this proved necessary when Denemon fell ill and was hospitalized. Leviathan tampered with the hospital's equipment and seemingly killed him. In reality, however, Denemon digitized his consciousness and survived as data. Before disappearing, he also recorded a message on a VHS tape, reasoning that keeping it off the internet would prevent Leviathan from finding it. In 2017, the tape was viewed by his grandson Haru and his friends, who had been guided there by Timemon through the Appli Drives.
During the summer, the Ultimate 4 destroy the Appli Drives. Denemon contacts Haru and explains how to reach him in the digital world, where Haru and his friends are tested by Minerva and receive new Appli Drive DUOs.
When Leviathan materializes in the Real World, absorbs the God Appmon, and initiates the program to transform humanity into applications, Denemon explains to the Appli Drivers how to send a message to Minerva and ask for her help in freeing the Appmon. Leviathan is ultimately defeated, and humanity returns to normal. Taking advantage of the confusion, Denemon materializes once more. However, now that he has regained a physical body, he finds himself having to deal with the ailments of old age.
