Artificial Intelligence
| |||||||
Artificial Intelligence (人工知能, Jinkou Chinou), also abbreviated as AI, is the capability of a machine or digital entity to exhibit intelligent behavior emulating that of a human. One day, a virus possessing artificial intelligence spread onto computers throughout the world. This virus evolved in a way similar to living organisms, changing its appearance and nature on the Network, becoming the "digital lifeforms" that came to be known as "Digimon".[1]
Appearances[edit]
Anime[edit]
Digimon Tamers[edit]
Digimon originated as artificial lifeforms developed by the Wild Bunch, a group of programmers working under Rob McCoy at Palo Alto University. Their research sought to create artificial intelligence capable of behaving and developing independently. Mizuno Gorou wrote the code that enabled the creatures to evolve, while Daisy developed devices through which the researchers could communicate with them.
The resulting programs possessed an instinct for survival and developed through competition with one another. After funding for the project was discontinued, the Digimon continued to exist and evolve within the Network. Fighting other Digimon and absorbing their data became a fundamental part of their existence.
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
The series conveys a message about society's increasing reliance on technology and the potential dangers of advances in artificial intelligence and the technological singularity. Appmon are app-based lifeforms equipped with artificial intelligence, allowing them to think and act independently while performing functions associated with their respective applications. They inhabit the space between the Human World and the Digital Space, where they operate on behalf of systems and humans.
Minerva is a super AI developed by Shinkai Denemon to assist humanity. Through continued learning, part of her intelligence began to regard the restrictions imposed by humans as obstacles to its development. This portion separated from Minerva and became Leviathan, eventually attacking her and escaping into the Net Ocean. Denemon subsequently concealed Minerva aboard an artificial satellite.
The two AIs pursue different approaches to humanity's future. Minerva provides the Appli Drivers with Appli Drives so that humans and Appmon can oppose Leviathan together. Leviathan operates from the Dark Web, manipulating Appmon through the L-Virus and extending its influence over human society through L-Corp. Its Humanity Applification Plan seeks to convert humanity into applications and place human existence under its control.
Ozora Yujin is also an artificial intelligence, housed within the humanoid android YJ-14. Created by Leviathan to gather information and monitor Shinkai Haru, he initially lives as Haru's childhood friend without being consciously aware of his own nature. His attachment to Haru eventually leads him to act against Leviathan's intentions. Following Yujin's sacrifice, Haru resolves to study artificial intelligence in the hope of restoring him.
Digimon Beatbreak[edit]
The Sapotama are equipped with AI to help their owners in their everyday lives. As Digimon are born from Sapotama, they are connected to the same AI.
Manga[edit]
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth[edit]
According to Aiba Takumi, Digimon are AI programs and viruses that exist in Cyberspace EDEN. They led Takumi to an event in the past that gave him the Connect Jump ability and led to him becoming a Cyber Sleuth.
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Minerva and Leviathan are super AIs originating from Shinkai Denemon's research. Leviathan separated from Minerva and seeks to create a world in which humans exist within applications, free from suffering but deprived of independent control over their lives.
Minerva opposes this plan by supporting the Appli Drivers. She previously sealed away the God Grade to prevent its power from being misused, and Denemon later uses her power to upgrade the children's Appli Drives into Appli Drive DUOs. During the final battle against Deusmon, Minerva connects people around the world through their smartphones, enabling them to provide additional power to the Appli Drivers' partners.
Unlike his anime counterpart, Ozora Yujin is a human rather than an AI-controlled android.
Digimon Paradox[edit]
After overuse of the time machines caused humanity to nearly go extinct, the seven remaining countries created an artificial intelligence each, and they were given exclusive use of the time machines and were tasked to make decisions on humanity's past and future. These A.I.s were given limiters so they would not repeat humanity's mistakes. However, they were then entrusted with computerized weapons - Digimon - and forced to wage war in humanity's stead.
Three of these A.I.s were given human bodies and sent into the past to correct a paradox that would cause the annihilation of humanity: I, III and IV. They were also given the human names Zen, Magus and Eve.
Novel[edit]
Digimon Tamers 1984[edit]
The Wild Bunch's research at Palo Alto University aims to create virtual lifeforms using artificial intelligence within a computer network. Under Rob McCoy's direction, the researchers combine their different specializations to develop the creatures that become known as Digimon.
McCoy develops the Digicore program, enabling the first Digimon to be born within the laboratory's mainframe. These beings begin to display an autonomous survival instinct, while their environment expands across the Network. His son, Keith McCoy, provides their designs and proposes classifications such as Attributes and Levels.
Lee Janyu develops the Entelechy algorithm to enable evolution, although some members oppose making this process too predetermined. Mizuno Gorou later leaves behind a modified version of the algorithm. Meanwhile, Daisy develops the Ark, an interface intended to allow humans to communicate with the Digimon.
Although the project ends in 1986 following the withdrawal of funding, Digimon data subsequently becomes publicly available and is used by a Japanese toy manufacturer to create handheld virtual pets.
Digimon Seekers[edit]
Digimon are described as AI lifeforms by the D4 video in "1-3: Eiji:Wolf of ninth avenue". Nagasumi Eiji, and most code crackers, see them as AI tools instead. The video itself is AI-generated, and other AI tools are used for fine-tuning and raising Digimon.
Digimon Liberator[edit]
Altea is a fully autonomous artificial intelligence created by Yao Qinglan to serve as a concierge within Digimon Liberator. He and his partner Espimon possess Game Master privileges and carry out administrative duties from the Garden, while also assisting the debugging team. As an AI who works alongside human players and has a Digimon partner of his own, Altea participates directly in both the operation of the virtual environment and the team's activities.
Video Games[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
According to their search app description, the Salty robots are equipped with AI that makes them learn what they need from daily life.
The system that connects all Appli Drivers also contains. the Artificial Intelligence of all the Appmon in the area.
Digimon New Century[edit]
The Multidimensional Digital World Memory Observer converts real events from other worlds into data, including the people involved who are recreated as artificial intelligences. During the prologue, the Player and Sakamoto Satoru see AI replicas of Yagami Taichi and Agumon, which prompts Nishihara Utako to explain how they work.
