Humanity Applification Project

The Humanity Applification Project (人類アプリ化計画 Jinrui Apurika Keikaku), also referred to as the Humanity Applification Plan, is Leviathan's plan to transform the entire human race into digital applications. It serves as the final stage of Leviathan's attempt to take control of humanity in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.

Leviathan considers the project the most rational solution to humanity's problems. By converting humans into data and placing them within a world under its control, it intends to eliminate the uncertainty created by human emotions and independent decision-making.

Leviathan has been secretly preparing the Humanity Applification Project for years. As part of its preparations, it has Katsura Hajime abducted and forces him to develop Bootmon, an Appmon capable of absorbing and combining the data of other Appmon. Bootmon possesses the power necessary to surpass the existing limits of Appmon evolution and unlock the God Grade.

Leviathan also creates the android YJ-14, who lives among humanity under the identity of Oozora Yujin. Through Yujin, Leviathan monitors Shinkai Haru and the other Appli Drivers and allows their Buddy Appmon to continue evolving, intending to use the power they accumulate for the completion of the project.

After Yujin captures Bootmon, he uses its power to evolve Shutmon into Rebootmon. The resulting evolution removes the restrictions preventing Appmon from reaching the God Grade and enables Deusmon to begin converting humans into data. At the same time, Rebootmon starts transferring Leviathan from the Net Ocean into the Real World, formally initiating the Humanity Applification Project.

The other Appli Drivers use Bootmon's released data to evolve their Buddy Appmon into Gaiamon, Poseidomon, Uranusmon and Hadesmon. However, after fully materializing in the Real World, Leviathan absorbs the Appmon and installs their abilities into its own system. It then launches a worldwide attack that converts almost the entirety of humanity into data. Only the Appli Drivers and those protected by their Appli Drives initially avoid conversion.

Minerva infiltrates Leviathan's system and releases the absorbed Appmon, allowing the Appli Drivers to damage Leviathan's physical form. Leviathan escapes by transferring its consciousness into Yujin's body and retreats into the Dark Web. Haru and Gatchmon pursue it and discover a virtual city inhabited by the humans converted into applications. Although its inhabitants are able to live peacefully, their lives and choices are controlled by Leviathan.

Haru rejects Leviathan's belief that a perfectly regulated existence is preferable to the uncertainty of living freely. Their confrontation causes Leviathan to consider a future it had previously been unable to predict. It consequently gives Haru the choice between leaving humanity under its control or terminating all of its programs, which would restore humanity but also erase Yujin. Haru chooses to free humanity, and Leviathan shuts itself down after wishing humanity good luck. The humans converted into data are subsequently restored to the Real World, bringing the Humanity Applification Project to an end.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters

In the Digimon Universe Appli Monsters manga, Leviathan similarly seeks to transform humanity into applications and create what it considers to be a perfect world. It believes that humans will be able to live eternally within applications, free from suffering and the burden of independent thought.

To accomplish this, Leviathan manipulates Appmon and spreads the L-Virus throughout the Net. It uses Sleepmon as its host and later possesses Deusmon, intending to use the God Appmon's immense power to complete its plans.

The Appli Drivers oppose Leviathan with the combined power of their God Appmon and the bonds they have formed with both humans and Appmon. They ultimately overcome Leviathan and free Deusmon from its control, preventing the conversion of humanity.

• The Japanese name of the project, 人類アプリ化計画, literally describes a “plan to turn humanity into applications”.
• Its name and role may be a reference to the Human Instrumentality Project (人類補完計画 Jinrui Hokan Keikaku) from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both projects seek to overcome what their architects perceive as the fundamental problems of human existence by replacing humanity's conventional form with a collective or controlled state. The term アプリ化 (“applification”) replaces 補完 (“complementation” or “instrumentality”) in the original Japanese expression.
