Katsura Rei is one of the protagonists in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.
Profile[edit]
Rei is a shy, thoughtful, and solitary individual who rarely shows his emotions. Naturally suspicious, he does not easily trust others and prefers to do things his own way. He wages a personal battle against Leviathan, who kidnapped his younger brother, Hajime, and only rarely cooperates with the other Appli Drivers. Mature beyond his years, Rei took care of Hajime by himself following their mother's death. However, his cold and aloof demeanor often fades when Hajime is involved.
Rei is a computer genius and a skilled hacker. He is also fond of drinking energy jellies known as "Choo Choo Jelly".
Etymology[edit]
The name Rei and surname Katsura possibly come from Ray Kurzweil (レイ・カーツワイル Rei Kātsuwairu), author of The Singularity Is Near. Despite not being written in kanji, Rei can mean "zero" (零). Together with Hajime, which can mean "one" (一) if viewed as a nanori reading, they are a reference to binary code. Katsura also means "Cercidiphyllum japonicum". It might as well refer to the Katsura River or Katsurazawa Dam as a reference to the Net Ocean.

Appearances[edit]
Rei's début is in episode three of the season, along with Hackmon. He appears again in episode nine, and attacks the other Appli Drivers, possibly to get a sense of their power. He shows up more frequently throughout the series and eventually becomes more friendly towards the other Appli Drivers.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Rei was born in 2002. After the death of his mother, Rei hacked official records to avoid being separated from his younger brother, Hajime. One day, however, he received a mysterious message from Leviathan containing a puzzle to solve. It took Rei several weeks to find the solution, whereas Hajime, who had unknowingly received the same message, solved it within minutes. Hajime insisted on accompanying Rei to the rendezvous, only to fall into Leviathan's trap instead. From that moment onward, Rei, consumed by guilt, devoted himself entirely to finding his brother.
One day, Rei discovered an Appli Drive inside a grocery bag, and shortly afterward, Hackmon saved him from a cyberattack orchestrated by Leviathan, asking Rei to join forces with him. Rei initially preferred to work alone and sent Hackmon away. However, after Hackmon saved him from Dezipmon a second time, Rei realized he could not accomplish his goal alone and decided to partner with Hackmon, thereby unlocking the Appli Drive.
Rei and Hackmon monitored Haru and Gatchmon from afar, but had no intention of allowing them to collect the Seven Code Appmon themselves. Through a cunning plan, Rei and Hackmon succeeded in stealing the Chips of Ropuremon and Gomimon. Haru and the others attempted to pursue them through the Net Ocean, but were ambushed by Sakusimon. Rei and Hackmon chose to help them, forcing Sakusimon to retreat. When Sakusimon attacked again, Raidramon performed an Applink with DoGatchmon and defeated him. In order to settle the score, Rei later returned the Chips, although he still refused to join the group.
Instead, Rei and Hackmon continued tracking down Mienumon. On January 14, Mienumon stole Tellermon's crystal ball, believing it contained information regarding the Seven Code Appmon. Cornered by Raidramon and DoGatchmon, Mienumon fled and abandoned the crystal ball. Rei and Hackmon later collaborated with Haru and the others once again after Mienumon and the Virusmon infected the servers of Waffle Corp.

Rei makes an appearance in one of the sub-quests while in the midst of searching for the Seven Code Appmon.
Later on, Rei and Hackmon participate in the Hifumigaoka vs. Fujimizaka 4v4 friendly tournament (交流戦, Kōryū-sen) in the Cyber Arena during the special post-game episode. He defeats Mio in the first round and is defeated by Kazuki/Itsuki in the second round.
