Katsura Rei is one of the protagonists in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.
Profile[edit]
Rei is a shy, thoughtful, and solitary individual who rarely shows his emotions. Naturally suspicious, he does not easily trust others and prefers to do things his own way. He wages a personal battle against Leviathan, who kidnapped his younger brother, Katsura Hajime, and only rarely cooperates with the other Appli Drivers. Mature beyond his years, Rei took care of Hajime by himself following their mother's death. However, his cold and aloof demeanor often fades when Hajime is involved.
Rei is a computer genius and a skilled hacker. He is also fond of drinking energy jellies known as "Choo Choo Jelly".
Etymology[edit]
The name Rei and surname Katsura possibly come from Ray Kurzweil (レイ・カーツワイル Rei Kātsuwairu), author of The Singularity Is Near. Despite not being written in kanji, Rei can mean "zero" (零). Together with Hajime, which can mean "one" (一) if viewed as a nanori reading, they are a reference to binary code. Katsura also means "Cercidiphyllum japonicum". It might as well refer to the Katsura River or Katsurazawa Dam as a reference to the Net Ocean.

Appearances[edit]
Rei's début is in episode three of the season, along with Hackmon. He appears again in episode nine, and attacks the other Appli Drivers, possibly to get a sense of their power. He shows up more frequently throughout the series and eventually becomes more friendly towards the other Appli Drivers.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Rei was born in 2002. After the death of his mother, Rei hacked official records to avoid being separated from his younger brother, Hajime. One day, however, he received a mysterious message from Leviathan containing a puzzle to solve. It took Rei several weeks to find the solution, whereas Hajime, who had unknowingly received the same message, solved it within minutes. Hajime insisted on accompanying Rei to the rendezvous, only to fall into Leviathan's trap instead. From that moment onward, Rei, consumed by guilt, devoted himself entirely to finding his brother.
One day, Rei discovered an Appli Drive inside a grocery bag, and shortly afterward, Hackmon saved him from a cyberattack orchestrated by Leviathan, asking Rei to join forces with him. Rei initially preferred to work alone and sent Hackmon away. However, after Hackmon saved him from Dezipmon a second time, Rei realized he could not accomplish his goal alone and decided to partner with Hackmon, thereby unlocking the Appli Drive.
Rei and Hackmon monitored Haru and Gatchmon from afar, but had no intention of allowing them to collect the Seven Code Appmon themselves. Through a cunning plan, Rei and Hackmon succeeded in stealing the Chips of Ropuremon and Gomimon. Haru and the others attempted to pursue them through the Net Ocean, but were ambushed by Sakusimon. Rei and Hackmon chose to help them, forcing Sakusimon to retreat. When Sakusimon attacked again, Raidramon performed an Applink with DoGatchmon and defeated him. In order to settle the score, Rei later returned the Chips, although he still refused to join the group.
Instead, Rei and Hackmon continued tracking down Mienumon. On January 14, Mienumon stole Tellermon's crystal ball, believing it contained information regarding the Seven Code Appmon. Cornered by Raidramon and DoGatchmon, Mienumon fled and abandoned the crystal ball. Rei and Hackmon later collaborated with Haru and the others once again after Mienumon and the Virusmon infected the servers of Waffle Corp.

In Yongendori, after Hackmon assured him they were "the one", Rei called Kazuki/Itsuki by name, starting the sub quest "A Boy Called Rei". He told Kazuki/Itsuki to give him their contact info and he'd contact them later with instructions, then left. Soon after, Rei sent them a message, from which Kazuki/Itsuki learned his name, ordering to go to the convenience store in Yongendori. Kazuki/Itsuki found him in the AR-Field, where he berated them for taking too long then told them they were going to hack into the convenience store's system together. Before Kazuki/Itsuki could get any more from him, Rei went into an AR Dungeon. Kazuki/Itsuki caught up to him on its deepest part, where he would hack into the system with Hackmon's help. Hackmon then showed up and introduced himself as the hacking app's Appmon. He also explained he was aware of Kazuki/Itsuki's meeting with Shinkai Haru as he had hacked into the town's security cameras. Rei then yelled at Hackmon to stop giving Kazuki/Itsuki unneccesary details and told Kazuki/Itsuki to keep "it" occupied while they hacked. Kazuki/Itsuki briefly wondered who "it" was before the Cameramon of the surveilance camera showed up and attacked them. After the fight, Rei complained he didn't get much useful information then attempted to leave for the next place to check but was stopped by Kazuki/Itsuki who demanded he told them what he was doing if he wanted their help, starting by explaining what he investigated by hacking into the convenience store. Rei explained convenience stores collected all kinds of data. More importantly, convenience stores in the area even recorded the apps customers used. Rei didn't know why, but he still used the data to check for unfamiliar apps or anything strange to search for something, though he refused to explain what. He then told Kazuki/Itsuki to wait for instructions as he and Hackmon left for the next place.
Back in the Real World, Kazuki/Itsuki was willing to help Rei if he was in trouble but couldn't stand his attitude. Rei then ordered them to go to the observation plaza on Mount Yongen, which Kazuki/Itsuki accepted to do as a last favour to him. There, Rei intended to check an electronic bulletin board, which he explained was because even Appmon had information they didn't want posted on message boards which was passed along using old-fashioned analog methods, namely information brokers, and he was going to talk to one. Said information broker was Libramon, who Rei asked about the Seven Code Appmon in Hifumigaoka, Nikotamagawa and Mihamakou. However, Libramon hadn't heard of Seven Code Appmon in those places. Rei then decided to have Hackmon hack into Libramon's archives while Kazuki/Itsuki kept it occupied, but Kazuki/Itsuki refused as they disliked Rei's methods, telling him to talk to people properly instead of forcing the answers he sought. However, it was too late to do so as Libramon was now too angry to talk anything through due to his dislike of hacking, and while Kazuki/Itsuki didn't want to fight it, said fight was inevitable. After the fight, Libramon left while complaining about Rei extracting its information without permission. With that done, Rei now knew Libramon was saying the truth and there were no Seven Code Appmon in the Hifumigaoka Peripheral Region. Kazuki/Itsuki yelled at him that Libramon told him that from the start and Rei wondered if they trusted anything anyone said. Kazuki/Itsuki threatened to stop him personally if he continued with his methods. Rei realized he hadn't checked Kazuki/Itsuki's Appmon yet and Hackmon attempted to hack Kazuki/Itsuki, initiating a battle.
Rei opens the fight with Hackmon + Protecmon, which AppGattai into Raidramon. He follows that with Weatherdramon and Docmon, both Applinked with [Pipomon]]. He also uses Dezipmon for Appli Skills.
While they lost the fight, Hackmon nonetheless managed to complete his hacking, which confirmed that Kazuki/Itsuki had some rare Appmon but no Seven Code Appmon. Rei and Hackmon then left as they had no more use for Kazuki/Itsuki. While they pursued him, they couldn't catch up to him and were left behind, thinking about how Rei had a lonely look in his eyes and wondering if they'd meet again someday, somewhere.
Rei is the final opponent of the Raidra Cup Tournament. Before the fight starts, he says the Cyber Arena is the perfect place for searching for Seven Code Appmon and warns Kazuki/Itsuki not to interfere. He uses the same Appmon as before.
Rei was part of the Fujimizaka team in the Exchange Festival, alongside Haru, Asuka Torajirou, and Karan Eri. After Astra and Eri went through their catchphrases, Kazuki/Itsuki was shocked they were all Haru's friends. With that done, MCmon declared the "Exchange Festival" (交流戦, Kōryū-sen) started.
Round 1, battle 2 was Mio vs Rei. According to Ouji and Kayo, Mio tried to disrupt Rei's pace but he was completely unaffected and dominated the match. Rei thought the battle had been a waste of his time while Naoto wanted revenge for Mio, though Mio tried to stop him as they had a fair battle which she lost. Regardless, Naoto became laser-focused on avenging Mio, to her embarassment, such as not caring about his round 1 battle with Eri.
Two members of each team passed on to round 2: Kazuki/Itsuki and Naoto from Hifumigaoka, and Haru and Rei from Fujimizaka. Ouji thought their battles would be worth watching, as Kayo said his profile was worth watching.
Semifinals, battle 1 was Kazuki/Itsuki vs Rei. Ouji commented that Rei's Raidramon was a Super Hacking Appmon, a troublesome opponent for Teito Security. Kayo had to remind him that Rei's opponent was Kazuki/Itsuki. Naoto ordered Kazuki/Itsuki not to lose to him, who he saw as Mio's foe, but then corrected himself and ordered them to lose instead so he could defeat Rei and avenge both of them, which Kazuki/Itsuki found ridiculous. Rei starts the fight with Raidramon + Dezipmon, which AppGattai into Revivemon. He then uses Weatherdramon + Protecmon. He also uses Docmon for Appli Skills.
While Rei lost, he wasn't interested in winning or losing. Naoto, however, was annoyed at someone else defeating "Mio's foe". Ouji commented that Kazuki/Itsuki's passion overcame Rei's calmness, making for an exciting battle, which Kayo agreed with, if only to parrot Ouji. After the fight, Rei left, arguing he had something to do. MCmon thought he was a very cool guy. Even after he left, however, Naoto was still focused on Rei, to the point that he attributed his defeat to Haru to losing his composure because Kazuki/Itsuki defeated Rei, though Mio told him not to blame his defeat on others.
The Exchange Festival can then be replayed as a normal tournament. The battles are the same as in the story: Astra, who is more fired up than ever; Rei, who isn't there to make friends; and Haru, who finds battling with Kazuki/Itsuki more thrilling than reading books and refuses to lose to them. All of them use the same Appmon as before.
Rei is the second opponent of the Grand Exchange Festival, where he once again states he isn't there to make friends. He uses Revivemon + Dezipmon. He also uses Hadesmon for Appli Skills.
