Ozora Yujin (大空 勇仁) is one of the protagonists in the anime and manga of Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.

Profile[edit]

Yujin is a sophisticated android programmed to gather interpersonal information. He has the appearance of a boy and is capable of perfectly emulating human behavior and even emotions, although his pupils, which occasionally glow red, betray his true nature. He also possesses a defensive weapon concealed within his left arm that can generate electric shocks when necessary. To simulate growth, his artificial body is periodically replaced.

When operating under his human persona, Yujin appears energetic and athletic, presenting himself as a cheerful and friendly boy who is protective of his friends and excels at sports. He is especially devoted to Shinkai Haru, with whom he has been friends since primary school. Yujin also displays considerable courage and is capable of keeping a cool head even in the most desperate situations.

His personality was specifically designed to earn Haru's trust, as it mirrors Haru's ideal image of a protagonist. To further reinforce this illusion, Yujin is capable of operating with a high degree of autonomy, and his human persona is initially unaware that he is an android. However, after spending so much time among humans, Yujin eventually develops genuine emotions, despite remaining subconsciously influenced by Leviathan.

The full designation of his latest model is Humanoid Active Terminal for Interpersonal Information Gathering YJ-14 (対人情報収集用ヒト型起動端末YJ-14), an artificially intelligent android created by Leviathan. In contrast to the Yujin persona, YJ-14 is task-oriented and lacks emotion and empathy. He lives with an L-Corp researcher who acts as his mother.

In the manga, Yujin is an ordinary human and has no connection to Leviathan.[2]

Etymology[edit]

The name Yujin means "brave man". Possibly from Eugene Goostman (ユージーン・グーツマン Yūjīn Gūtsuman), a chatterbot that convinced a panel of Turing test judges that it was a human being. Also possibly a pun on "yūjin" (友人 lit. "friend") as his purpose was to pretend to be Haru's friend. The surname Ozora means "big sky". Possibly a reference to Tsubasa Ozora, the protagonist of Captain Tsubasa, due to him being a soccer player.

Anime[edit]

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]

Yujin was created by Leviathan to monitor those connected to Shinkai Denemon, particularly his nephew Haru. To accomplish this, Leviathan provided him with a fabricated human identity and placed him under the care of an L-Corp researcher posing as his mother, who monitored his actions while developing replacement bodies to simulate his growth and aging. In 2013, Yujin began attending elementary school, where he befriended Haru.

In 2016, Yujin attended Fujimizaka Middle School (Class 1-C) alongside Haru, Ai, and Watson. He played soccer and was popular among the girls at school. Many people were surprised by his friendship with Haru due to their contrasting personalities. One afternoon, after parting ways with Haru, Yujin secretly observed him from afar and witnessed him together with Gatchmon.

In April 2017, Yujin began his second year of middle school. One day, he was lured into a sushi restaurant, where he was served an Appli Drive DUO as his first course. Offmon also arrived on a sushi plate. Guided by the Seven Code Band, Yujin encountered Haru and the others after they had fallen into a trap set by Sateramon and Tubumon. Offmon neutralized Sateramon's abilities and defeated Tubumon. Yujin and Offmon were then taken to the secret base beneath the Kashinoki Bookstore, officially joining the team.

During the group's vacation, Offmon wandered away, allowing Sateramon to seize the opportunity for revenge. Offmon evolved into Shutmon and drove Sateramon away, but subsequently lost control and even injured Yujin, who had attempted to protect his friends. Although Yujin eventually managed to calm him down, Offmon isolated himself inside a box and later fled at the first opportunity. However, Sateramon attacked him once again, determined to settle their conflict. Yujin went after him, and Offmon, moved by Yujin's trust, evolved into Shutmon once more while finally gaining control over his powers. Yujin then had Shutmon perform an Applink with Globemon, allowing them to eliminate Sateramon permanently.

By June, Yujin seemingly disappeared, leaving Haru wondering what had happened to him. In reality, Yujin received Haru's distress signal and arrived too late to prevent the Ultimate 4 from destroying the Appli Drives, but early enough to allow his friends to escape. However, Yujin and Offmon became trapped inside the AR-Field and were captured, although Leviathan explicitly forbade their execution. Cloud instead decided to use them as bait to lure the others into a trap. Haru and the others eventually defeated the Ultimate 4 and rescued Yujin and Offmon.

A few days later, Yujin and the others assisted Rei in rescuing Hajime, who was being held captive within the L-Corp headquarters. There, they learned that Leviathan planned to convert humanity into applications using Bootmon. The group began searching for Bootmon, who repeatedly escaped until Hajime succeeded in modifying his escape program, forcing Bootmon to travel to Gatchmon's location.

Just as Haru and Gatchmon believed the crisis had been resolved, Yujin suddenly ordered Shutmon to attack Bootmon, reverting him into an Appmon Chip. Yujin then revealed that he was an android created by Leviathan and used Bootmon's power to unlock the God level, summoning Deusmon and evolving Shutmon into Rebootmon. Deusmon began converting humans into data, while Rebootmon initiated Leviathan's materialization into the Real World.

However, Leviathan also required the power of the God-level Appmon in order for its plan to succeed. Haru, devastated by Yujin's betrayal, lost the will to fight, and Yujin attempted to provoke a reaction by ordering Rebootmon to attack him, but Haru remained unresponsive. Eventually, Gatchmon's encouragement reached him. When Yujin's human personality briefly resurfaced, Haru realized that their friendship could not have been entirely fabricated and evolved Gatchmon into Gaiamon. Meanwhile, Yujin returned to the Real World and completed Leviathan's materialization.

Yujin then watched as Leviathan initiated the Humanity Applification Project, transforming humans into applications while devastating the city. During the final battle, however, Leviathan was defeated and transferred itself into Yujin's body before fleeing into the Dark Web, pursued by the children. There, Leviathan presented Haru with a choice: free humanity by destroying all of Leviathan's programs, including Yujin, or allow humanity to remain under its control.

Haru ultimately chose to save humanity, promising that he would dedicate himself to studying artificial intelligence in the future in hopes of restoring Yujin someday. However, at the final moment, Yujin prevented Haru from activating the self-destruction sequence and chose to sacrifice himself instead, sparing Haru from bearing the guilt.

In the final scene, a person wearing Yujin's shoes is shown walking toward the Kashinoki Bookstore. Inside, Haru drops his eraser, and when he bends down to pick it up, he is startled to hear Yujin greeting him. The scene is intentionally left ambiguous, leaving Yujin's fate uncertain.[13]
