As a tribute to classic banchō manga, its design incorporates common cliches of popular-culture banchō characters, including its GAKU-RAN worn over the shoulders, and its student cap. Volcano Ota was also used as a model. Bancho Leomon's final design is "almost unchanged" from Moriyama's first rough draft (pictured right), although Moriyama had originally intended for its GAKU-RAN to be white in color.
