Weight

From Wikimon
Burpmon, a Digimon who is the result of extreme Weight gain.

Weight (体重 Taijū; Dub: Weight[1]/Data Size[2]) is a measure of the total volume of data that is contained within a Digimon's program.[3]

Overview[edit]

Unit of measurement[edit]

A Digimon's weight is measured in a unit that is abbreviated G (uncapitalized g in earlier productions). Different sources give different definitions and names to the unit of measurement.

  • Early virtual pets, like the Digital Monster and Digimon Pendulum, define g (uncapitalized) as standing for grams 「グラム」, as in the common real-world unit of measurement for physical mass.[4][5]
  • Later virtual pets, such as the Digimon Pendulum Progress, tend to define G (capitalized) as an abbreviation of giga 「ギガ」, as in the gigabyte unit from the system of units of measurement for data.[6] The Digital Monster - Artbook Ver.1~5&20th also uses this definition.[3]

Effects[edit]

Fundamentally, Weight—the volume of data in a Digimon's program—is positively correlated with physical size and power, so large and powerful Digimon tend to have higher Weights, and vice versa. However, depending on the individual Digimon or its species, this may not necessarily be the case in practice.[3]

In virtual pets and similar video games, a Digimon's Weight fluctuates during the day based on how it is raised and cared for. Eating food or protein generally causes it to gain a slight amount of weight, while undergoing training causes it to lose a slight amount of weight.[4] Appropriate management of a Digimon's weight is generally part of good care, and in the Digimon World video games and Bandai Asia virtual pets, maintaining a Weight within a target range is also often a criterion for evolving into particular Digimon.

It is common for Digimon who are overfed to the point that they reach the maximum possible Weight of 99G to experience negative effects, usually becoming sick.[7] In the Digimon Twin, a Digimon who reaches a Weight of 80G will transform into Burpmon.[8]

Minimum Weight[edit]

Digimon species who appear in virtual pets and similar video games have a Minimum Weight (最低体重 Saitei taijū) value. The weight of a Digimon of a given species cannot be decreased below the species' Minimum Weight value.
