Seven Great Demon Lords
Seven Great Demon Lords (七大魔王 "Nana Dai Maō"?) is a collective term for the strongest Demon-type Digimon. Usually, they don't interfere with each other, neither cooperate or become hostile with each other regardless of their interests or disagreements. [1]
They were once high-ranking Angel digimon, especially among beings of goodness. However, they each committed a deadly sin and fell.[2] When Lucemon instigated a rebellion against God[3], alongside other Angel digimon that fell,[4][5] they were deleted to the Dark Area by the Digital World's system (or perhaps the very human that created the Digital World), and being sealed there as punishment,[3] continuing to exist as a deadly sin, a desire that they each pursue, subsequently becoming Demon Lords.[6] Belphemon was sealed in the deepest parts of the Dark Area, and as its power was too immense, its data was put in a sleep state by that very same system.[7]
Currently, the Seven Great Demon Lords are the chief nobility of the Dark Area,[8] residing within the heart of that world, the den of demons,[9] and each member has the right to command legions of the "Nightmare Soldiers", if they so wish.[8] They are also able to subvert the cycle of reincarnation presided over by Anubimon—instead of having the chance to be reborn, the data of their victims becomes their own flesh and blood.[10][11] Among the Seven Great Demon Lords, Lucemon: Falldown Mode is said to be the strongest.[3]
Despite their might, however, certain other demonic digimon are powerful enough to stand outside their authority, such as Grand Dracumon, who is so strong that even the Seven Great Demon Lords cannot interfere with him.[12] Some other Demon Lords such as Belial Vamdemon are rumored to be part of this group, but are not members.[13] The group has a natural rivalry with the Royal Knights.[14]
Members[edit]
These are the known members of the Seven Great Demon Lords. There are 7 members in total, each representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins. They are all Demon Lord type Digimon (There are also more Demon Lord type Digimon, but only this 7 are mentioned to be members of the Seven Great Demon Lords). (Note: The X Digimon still count as the same Demon Lord).

The Seven Great Demon Lords are listed here in order of ascending Purgatory Level. This ordering is a reference to "the levels/terraces of purgatory" mentioned in the epic poem, La Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri. In the poem, each level represented a different one of the seven deadly sins and presented ways to atone for each sin. As a person progressed, they would eventually make it to the top of the "Mountain of Purgatory", reaching Paradise. The structure of the "Mountain of Purgatory" analogous to the Seven Great Demon Lords' Purgatory Levels is the following:
|
Lucemon: Falldown Mode[edit]
|
The strongest of the "Seven Great Demon Lords", it is an ultimate Demon Lord Digimon which possesses both the divine and the diabolic. It instigated a rebellion in the far-flung past, and so it was sealed in the Dark Area along with many other Demon Lord Digimon. Its power exceeds that of Ultimates, and is said to rival that of the existence called "God" as well. It has a contradictory existence, in that one side of it loves all things, as God does, while the other is trying to destroy the whole world, as the Devil does. Hence, once it destroys this world, it intends to create a fresh new world. Its Special Moves are, after launching the opponent high into the sky with a wild dance of blows, holding their limbs fixed as it drives them back into the ground (Paradise Lost), and producing a three-dimensional magic square, as a glowing orb of holiness and evilness, which it traps the opponent within (Dead or Alive). When shut within this magic square, it is a 50/50 decision whether the opponent is either completely annihilated or suffers great damage. |
Leviamon[edit]
Called the "Devil Beast" out of terror of the exceedingly mighty power that this monster possesses, it is counted as one of the "Seven Great Demon Lords" and is the strongest monster existing in the Digital World. This extensive monster, said to possess gigantic jaws which could guzzle even the Digital World, is reported to sleep in the depths of the Net Ocean nearest to the Dark Area, and if it is awakened, it will despise any Digimon at the top, and will flee even Angel Digimon, much less other Demon Lord Digimon. However, as the existence of the limits on Digimon are decoded, its own appears similar to nothingness, and it is said that it builds the foundation for the existence of wickedness in the Digital World. Its Special Moves are destroying everything with its gigantic jaws (Rostrum), and mowing everything down with its long tail (Cauda). |
Demon[edit]
A Demon Lord Digimon that leads the many Demon and Fallen Angel Digimon. Like Devimon, Demon was originally an Angel Digimon, and a particularly high-ranked one. However, in response to a being of goodness in the Digital World (possibly the creator of the Digital World), it raged in fury and rebellion, and so was deleted to the Dark Area (the graveyard of erased data). It has vowed to one day conquer the Digital World, in revenge against the being of goodness. Also, while it led the rebellion, and was the strongest among the Ultimates, it plotted to secretly revive the "Super-Ultimate Digimon". Its Special Move is extremely high-temperature hellfire (Flame Inferno). Those who incur this technique burn up without a trace. |
Belphemon Rage Mode[edit]
|
It is said that Belphemon awakens from its eternal slumber once in a thousand years, and regains its natural shape. When Belphemon awakens from its slumber it changes into an incarnation of rage, and anything that enters its field of vision becomes a target for destruction. It is said that just by suffering Belphemon Rage Mode's roar, Perfect Digimon and below will have their data disintegrated and instantly die, and not even Ultimate Digimon can escape unharmed. Its Special Moves are black flames cast from the chains coiled around its body (Lampranthus), and a slash attack which is unleashed from its claws, clad in the flames of hell (Gift of Darkness). Furthermore, the data of Digimon consigned to oblivion by the Digimon crowned as the Seven Great Demon Lords is not reincarnated, but is sent to the center of the Dark Area, and becomes the flesh and blood of the Demon Lords. |
Barbamon[edit]
One of the "Seven Great Demon Lords", it is a Demon Lord Digimon which has the appearance of a long-bearded old man. Residing within the central part of the Dark Area, the den of demons, it manipulates Fallen Angel Digimon to carry out evil to its limit. It is obsessed with all of the treasure which exists within the Network, so out of avarice, and regardless of the means, it has a cruel personality with a greed that would kill Digimon just for a piece of treasure. It is the foremost and most cunning schemer of the Seven Great Demon Lords, and can easily manipulate the Ultimate Deathmon in addition to Fallen Angel Digimon. Its Special Moves are using its demonic staff "Death Lure" to tempt Digimon into an inescapable living hell, converting them to wickedness, and unleashing all of the Dark Area's evil energies at once as an extremely high-temperature explosion that burns up everything without a trace (Pandemonium Lost). Furthermore, even Belial Vamdemon's Special Move "Pandemonium Flame" only releases a small fraction of these energies. |
Beelzebumon[edit]
While it possesses the power to command the many Demon Digimon, it is a Demon Lord Digimon that dares to observe a solitary existence. As one of the "Seven Great Demon Lords", it is said that it could stand at the peak of the dark army, "Nightmare Soldiers", if it cared to, although it is also said that there exists a Demon Lord Digimon which surpasses even Beelzebumon. It possesses its favorite shotgun "Berenjena" , and rides on the gigantic motorcycle-type machine, "Behemoth". Although its personality is cruel and merciless, it is also exceedingly prideful, so it would never attack the weak. Its Signature Move is raising a claw overhead and then tearing the opponent to pieces (Darkness Claw). Its Special Move is rapidly firing its two shotguns (Double Impact).
|
Lilithmon[edit]
One of the "Seven Great Demon Lords", it is a Demon Lord Digimon which has the appearance of a woman. It is thought that it was originally the same kind as Ofanimon, but it fell from heaven and eventually became known as the "Goddess of Darkness". It confounds its opponents with its bewitchingly lovely appearance, and it is said that those who are taken in by its temptations are invariably granted death. Its reputation as the "Goddess of Darkness" is appropriate, as it is tolerant in regards to wickedness, but offers only cold-hearted inhumanity in regards to goodness. The demonic "Nazar Nail" on its right arm corrodes everything it touches. Its Special Move is rotting the opponent's body with a sigh of darkness (Phantom Pain). It is said that when you receive this curse your data dissipates from the tips of your body, and dying you suffer from that pain. |
Crowns[edit]
Each of the Seven Great Demon Lords has their own crown (冠, Kanmuri) displayed in one of the seven colors of the visible spectrum of light.
The center of each crown depicts a sigil of one of the Seven Olympian Spirits, a group of seven mythological entities who, under God, ruled over the 196 provinces of Heaven and presided over the natural world for 490 years each[15]. They are mentioned in works such as Arbatel de magia veterum and are each associated with a celestial body, which is also displayed on the crown directly above the Olympian Spirit seal, and corresponds to a particular sin.
Within the space between the two concentric circles is text stating a designated Level; this is "666" for all the crown where "666" is the "Number of the Beast", a concept mentioned in the Book of Revelation, System; the demon that traditionally represents the respective sin, and Code which identifies a sin associated with the aforementioned demon. At the bottom of the inner circle is text which specifies a caution for a Purgatory Level ranging between 1 and 7.
The structure of the text is in the following format:
- LEVEL:___ SYSTEM:___ CODE:___ (repeated twice)
- CAUTION! PURGATORY LEVEL ___

Connections[edit]
Lucemon: Satan Mode[edit]
Having the appearance of the dragon of Revelation, it is Lucemon's final form. As was told in the Revelation, it carries the Crowns of the Seven Deadly Sins upon its head, and it holds the globe of darkness, "Gehenna", which absorbs all attacks. Before the Gehenna all attacks are nullified, and it is said that the world will perish when Lucemon takes this form. However, Lucemon's true form (Lucemon Larva) exists within the Gehenna, and Satan Mode is no more than Lucemon's reflection. Therefore, no matter how many times Satan Mode is attacked, those attacks will not reach the true form, Lucemon Larva. Its Special Moves are a flame of destruction which purifies everything (Purgatorial Flame), and a light of annihilation fired from the seven Crowns (Divine Atonement).
Ogudomon[edit]
Ogudomon, also known as the Super Demon Lord of Atonement (贖罪の超魔王, Shokuzai no Chō Maō)[16], is a grotesque Super Demon Lord who has seven legs and eyes, as well as an eighth eye. As it includes the whole of the Digital World's sins, and is a mysterious personification with the ability to atone for them all, the power of a Digimon with even a small amount of malice is counterbalanced, and it is impossible for it to defeat Ogudomon. Its Special Moves are running wild while lustful (Oratio Grandiloqua {Lat: Rhapsody}), and a shock-wave which is played from its oral-area (Catedral {Esp: Cathedral}). Also, it pulverizes its opponent with its enormous legs (Gradus {Lat: Step}).
Like Lucemon: Satan Mode, it carries the Crowns of the Seven Deadly Sins upon its head.
Gate of Deadly Sins[edit]
Although very little is known about it, the seven crowns are also engraved on the Gate of Deadly Sins 「大罪の門 Daizai no Mon」.
Tower of the Seven Deadly Sins[edit]
The Towers of the Seven Deadly Sins 「七大罪の塔 Nanadaizai no Tou」 are mysterious buildings.
In Digimon Collectors they begin appearing across the Digital World and they attract Digimon exhibiting their respective sin, as well as the Protagonist, who is sent to investigate them by the Royal Knights. Although the protagonist defeats the Great Demon Lords lurking within each tower, this only serves to bring about the manifestation of Ogudomon's tower, as well as the Super Demon Lord itself.
In Digimon World -next 0rder- International Edition the Seven Great Demon Lords each create one of the Towers whilst living in the Dark Area, however they are absorbed by the Grudgeful Hand, after which it destroys the Dark Area.

Ogudomon's Swords[edit]
Ogudomon has seven swords stuck in its body, said to contain the abilities of the Seven Great Demon Lords.
Each sword is inspired by the physical appearance of each of the Demon Lords, and features the crown of their respective sin floating above it, while embedded in Ogudomon's legs.
In Digimon Chronicle X, the Seven Diablomon X serving Lucemon X were able to summon Ogudomon's swords after absorbing the Seven Great Demon Lords, in their X-Antibody forms, and using them in their battle against the Royal Knights.

Digimon Frontier[edit]
The Lucemon: Falldown Mode card, Bo-137t, which is based on the anime character, states that the Lucemon of Frontier was a member of the Seven Great Demon Lords.
Digimon Savers[edit]
Belphemon, along with the other great demon lords, almost brought ruin to the Digital World long time ago. However, he was sealed deep inside an ancient ruin in the Digital World. Professor Akihiro Kurata found his Digitama and brought it to the real world at some point of time. He nurtured the Digitama that eventually hatched into Belphemon Sleep Mode. Kurata's plan was to use Belphemon as his ultimate weapon for both Digital World and Human World domination.
Digimon Xros Wars[edit]
Beelzebumon is mistakenly stated in its official Toei Animation profile to be a member of the Seven Great Demon Lords.[17]
Digimon Ghost Game[edit]
Lilithmon is a member of the Seven Great Demon Lords.[18]
Manga[edit]
Digimon Xros Wars[edit]
The group is mentioned by Ulforce V-dramon as a powerful Demon Lord-class group of Digimon. In his story, Ulforce V-dramon explains that the Royal Knights confused Homeostasis' prophecy of the "Red and Blue Dragon" that will destroy the world with Leviamon and Belphemon. Ulforce V-dramon also mentions that the rest of the Demon Lords, except for Lilithmon, didn't wanted to get involved in the war and maintained a neutral position.[19]
Digimon Chronicle X[edit]
The Seven Great Demon Lords all decided they wanted the X-Antibody for themselves, so take advantage of Grand Dracumon's plan to defeat Digimon and send them to the Dark Area.

Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode[edit]
The Seven Great Demon Lords appear in the Scheme of the Demon Lords chapter (策謀の魔王篇 Sakubō no Maō-hen). They're meant to be one of the forces that keeps balance in the world, but Barbamon and Demon wish to take over both worlds instead, starting the conflict in the chapter. Belphemon, Leviamon and Beelzebumon reject Barbamon's plans and decide to help Taiga and Shinomiya Rina stop him instead, Lilithmon wants to stop him but on her own and attacks them as well, while Lucemon is a victim of Barbamon's schemes and torture, turning him into the rage-driven Lucemon: Falldown Mode, then the world-destroying Lucemon: Satan Mode.
The Seven Great Demon Lords are extremely powerful and can only be stopped with the power of other Demon Lords, thus Taiga and Shinomiya Rina seek to obtain their powers, though this is a trap, as Barbamon wanted them to obtain said powers to force-feed them to Lucemon so he can become Satan Mode. Ultimately, Barbamon is killed by Demon to take over his plans, then Demon dies at the hands of Lucemon who he thought was under his control, and Lucemon is taken down and saved by Taiga and Digimaru, stopping their ambitions.
The Seven Great Demon Lords also appear as a collectable card set.
Digimon Collectors[edit]
The "Towers of the Seven Deadly Sins" that appear alongside the Digital World after Arkadimon is defeated start to collect the essence of all sins, as a prelude to the advent of Ogudomon.
Yggdrasil sent Ogudomon as a way to find superior beings that could defeat it, otherwise the whole world would collapse. The Royal Knights are unable to do anything against Ogudomon, due to in their words "the meaning of Justice can mean some evil depending on the interpretation", casting doubts on Yggdrasill's own judgement itself.
Digimon Fortune[edit]
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth[edit]
According to Mikagura Mirei, the Seven Great Demon Lords are multiversal constants, they exist throughout the entire multiverse, and all we see in the franchise are just fractions of the original Demon Lord. They exist in all the parallel universes because of the power they possess. The will of the universe couldn't allow such extraordinary powerful beings to exist, so they were dispersed across the multiverse in order to weaken their powers. It's a kind of seal, and by existing in each world, their power is dispersed. This phenomenon is described as a "providence of the universe", a system that isn't maintained by anyone and simply naturally works. The official English localization of the game explains this as each Demon Lord dividing their existence as a method of self-protection. These fractions are connected with each other and when an avatar is defeated, their powers are sent to all other avatars throughout the multiverse. No matter how many times they are defeated, they will always return as long as there are sins.
One of the problems of defeating one of its members is that the one who tries to face one of the Seven Great Demon Lords is committing a "sin" and soon after the fight against the Seven Great Demon Lord the one that faced them will be punished by the Digital World's system to suffer "karma" under certain circumstances. It is also said that they are above all the magical Digimon, being the highest of the high.
Digimon Linkz[edit]
In "Dragon's Land Chapter 1: The Key of the Dragon Stream" in Digimon Linkz, Volcanicdramon transforms the Seven Great Demon Lords into mutants that hold the Key Code, the clues to restores the Digital World. Along with Hina, the Player challenge the seven demons to gather the Key Codes. After collecting the seven Key Codes from each Demon Lord, Hina talks to the player. She says that they have gathered all the key codes but an error occurs and the program cannot be started unless using the IP of the administrator. Surprisingly, that IP matched to Volcanicdramon!

Trivia[edit]
- Each one of the Seven Great Demon Lords represent one of the Seven Deadly Sins and are based on seven demons from Judeo-Christian mythology, a reference to Peter Binsfeld's classification of demons, as well as incorporating elements from and references to the epic poem Paradise Lost by John Milton, and The Lesser Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis Regis).
- In the Digimon Card Game, the Gate of Deadly Sins「大罪の門 Daizai no Mon」can be seen in the background of the card EX2-044.
- During the "Hypnos Meeting 2019", following a fan's request for more details on the origin of the "Three Head Officers" in the manga, Nakashima Yuuki revealed that Bagramon went to Lucemon in search of someone to work alongside Tactimon, although Lucemon didn't want to work with someone and only see what would happen as a result of what Bagramon was trying to do, eventually turning down the offer. But Lilithmon, who was watching what was happening and took an interest in Bagramon, offered her help, although she ended up falling in love with Bagramon.[21]
