Digimon Knuckles[edit]
Gankoomon was Kawashima Hajime's Digimon partner and Hackmon's mentor. He taught Hackmon by example rather than explaining his actions, something that has caused a seed of doubt to manifest in Hackmon.
Some time prior to the story, Gankoomon and Hajime made a deal with Bloom Lordmon where they will find a way for Digimon to improve and become stronger without combat, while Bloom Lordmon will rent part of the forest for humans as an evacuation site if disaster strikes the human world. After speaking to Bloom Lordmon however, Hajime was temporarily controlled by Leviamon to burn down the forest to keep his research all for himself and make himself admired by everyone and hand over all of his transfer gadgets bar one prototype so Digimon will appear in the real world and attack there. As Leviamon reappeared, Hackmon tried to attack it to buy time for Gankoomon and Hajime to escape, but instead of retaliating, Leviamon brainwashed it. Gankoomon brought him to a cave and asked Hinukamuy to take care of him. Hajime tells him that the Digimon will be attacking the real world, and hands Gankoomon over the prototype gadget so he could enter the real world to fight the attacking Digimon and protect his son. Gankoomon warns Hajime that Bloom Lordmon will not take him kindly if he remained alone and he will die in the Digital World, but Hajime only reassures him that he will be fine alone. Gankoomon was them summoned into the Real World.
At the beginning of Episode 1, Gankoomon fell from the sky into the Real World. Later on, as Kawashima Haruka called for help when he was attacked by Mojyamon, Gankoomon arrived, falling between both of them. However, the fall was harsher than he expected as gravity was stronger than in the Digital World and he wasn't used to it. Mojyamon asked Gankoomon to give him food, but Gankoomon merely asked him if he thought he could win as an Adult-level Digimon, though he looked out-of-sorts. Mojyamon tried to use his Hone Hone Boomerang but Gankoomon stopped him with a simple slap, which returned Mojyamon to its senses. The now-sane Mojyamon realized the Digimon in front of him was a Royal Knight and ran away, terrified. Gankoomon was surprised at this but decided he'd search for him later. Instead, he turned to the human, who he recognized as Kawashima Haruka. He grabbed him by the wrist to stop him from running away and explained to him that his father, Kawashima Hajime, asked him to come find him, and he'd now protect him in said father's stead, as he pet Haruka on the head. Haruka just wondered what Gankoomon was talking about. Haruka brushed the Digimon's hand away and pretended Gankoomon had gotten the wrong person, but Gankoomon wasn't fooled as Haruka looked so similar to Hajime. Gankoomon grabbed Haruka again, who threatened to call the cops, but Gankoomon added he also recognized the watch on Haruka's wrist. Haruka asked Gankoomon if he really knew his father, as it was hard for him to imagine said father being friends with someone as outgoing as Gankoomon. Gankoomon offered to explain later but he asked Haruka for food first as he was starving.
At the Kawashima household, Gankoomon took off his coat and ate. Haruka wished he would explain himself before eating but Gankoomon argued that food, training, and sleep were the three essentials for building a strong and healthy body. Haruka thought about how he let him into his apartment since he knew his father's name but he was clearly suspicious. Gankoomon asked Haruka not to be so uptight around him since they'd live together from there on but Haruka argued he couldn't let him stay even if he was a friend of his father's, not like Gankoomon cared. With his food eaten, Gankoomon asked Haruka how much he knew about Hajime's work. Haruka asked Gankoomon if he was one of his father's coworkers but Gankoomon said that wasn't the case, though he did help him with his work. He then explained the Digital World: a dimension that existed in the Internet, separate from the Real World, where Digimon lived. He added that Haruka travelled the Digital World with them, researching whether it was possible for humans to live there and coexist with Digimon. Hinukamuy, Gankoomon and Mojyamon were neither humans nor animals, but Digimon, and Digimon served as subjects of Hajime's research. Haruka was left extremely confused about all Gankoomon talked about and moved his arm away as Hinukamuy tried to touch him, arguing Gankoomon must've gotten the wrong person as there was no way his father would go on such a crazy adventure. This made Gankoomon realize Hajime hadn't told Haruka anything at all about his research. This wounded Haruka, who confirmed his father never told him anything about his work as they didn't have that kind of relationship. He then told Gankoomon there was more food in the fridge and tried to leave for groceries. Gankoomon got up and offered to go with him but Haruka refused his help and ordered him to just stay there. After he left, Gankoomon pet Hinukamuy and said how he never expected to be yelled at by a teenager, as he was a Royal Knight, beings that should be intimidating, especially for children. He thought about Hajime and about how it was hard to get along with a son, then grabbed his coat and left.
After Haruka blocked Aero V-dramon's V-Wing Blade with Knightmon's shield, Gankoomon arrived, praised Haruka for staying alive, and explained that was Knightmon's shield and the self-defense program activating correctly, though he couldn't explain any further as he first had to punish the rampaging Aero V-dramon. He sent Hinukamuy to grab Aero V-dramon with their Jishin! Kaminari! Kaji! Oyaji! then punched it with Tekken Seisai. Haruka was shocked at Gankoomon's strength, proof he truly wasn't human. Gankoomon, meanwhile, realized he had gone too far on a Digimon that was just a Perfect, then tried to wake up the knocked-out Aero V-dramon with another slap.
After Aero V-dramon woke up, it thanked Gankoomon for bringing it back to its senses even if it really hurt, though Gankoomon said he had held back. Aero V-dramon explained it didn't know how it got there. It vaguely remembered talking to someone then found itself there. Gankoomon thought as much then had Haruka give him a forest for Aero V-dramon to hide in. After Aero V-dramon and the child left, Haruka asked Gankoomon where the people who disappeared went, if more Digimon would appear, and why, though Gankoomon gave weak answers to them all. He then explained that Hajime gave him the mission to go to the Real World and stop other Digimon from showing up in it. He realized the human disappearances were related to Digimon and resolved to clean up the mess his own species caused as a matter of pride. Gankoomon then asked Haruka why he didn't run away from Aero V-dramon and he answered he couldn't demand to have his father back like that child did so he couldn't just ignore him. Gankoomon pet Haruka on the head again and praised him for it, though that annoyed Haruka as he wasn't a kid. Gankoomon just laughed it off and instead offered to shake Haruka's hand as proof of their vow: for Haruka to support Gankoomon in his battle in the Real World, and Gankoomon, on his honour as a Royal Knight and as a stand-in for his father, swore to protect Haruka from all harm. He then added he'd be in trouble if Haruka refused, but thankfully he agreed to help him as Gankoomon had saved him twice already, though he asked him to drop the stand-in part. As such, Gankoomon swore to do it as Haruka's Partner instead. Gankoomon and Haruka shook hands, then Gankoomon had Hinukamuy join them too. With their alliance started, Gankoomon asked Haruka to tell him all about himself over dinner and teach him about the Real World. Haruka wanted to ask him about his watch instead but Gankoomon wanted to leave that for later. Haruka wondered if Gankoomon's praise was how a father's praise felt.
At the start of Episode 2, Gankoomon wakes up Haruka, who (unbeknown to him during that time) had his mind poisoned by Leviamon during his sleep. He tells Haruka that they are going on patrol for rogue Digimon and to solve this incident, they must speak to the Digimon that appeared, and it will not be easy as Digimon such as Wendimon, Dark Lizamon and Pico Devimon can use psychic attacks or spatial manipulation. Gankoomon also confirms that Haruka had to find the Digimon himself so he could beat them, as he is unfamiliar with the human world and reminds him that he didn't need to speak to him formally. He then hands him the transfer gadget prototype so he could summon the equipment of other Digimon to help him. Haruka asks him if he could fight himself with the gadget (an initial sign of Leviamon's corruption affecting him), but Gankoomon only tells him to leave the fighting for him. Gankoomon then wears Haruka's clothes to disguise himself, as he would stick out otherwise.
Once out, Gankoomon doesn't know to buy a train ticket, showing his cluelessness towards the human world as a Digimon. When they board the train, Gankoomon was happy that the trains in the human world were more comfortable compared to being inside a Trailmon. Haruka asks him what Trailmon is, and he explains that it is the primary transport for Digimon in the Digital World. Haruka then asks him further about what the Digital World is, and Gankoomon explains to him that Digimon's basic instinct is to battle, win and evolve, and only those with the most combat experience can evolve into their Perfect or Ultimate forms. Gankoomon himself also admits that he evolved by winning numerous battles as well. He also told Haruka that weaker Digimon do not survive in the Digital World unless they could band with each other, which is a rare sight, and some other Digimon will tempt others to gain power through shady means, then tells Haruka that he once collaborated with humans on the Digimon's migration plan to help the more vulnerable ones. As Gankoomon and Haruka finishes talking, he accidentally exits the wrong station, and Haruka asks him to board the next train.
Haruka and Gankoomon eventually go to a playground and sit on a bench, where a Vajramon and a Pajiramon appeared and attacked. Gankoomon orders Hinukamuy to attack them and tells Haruka to go away. However, Haruka's mind was poisoned, and he forces himself into the fight ignoring Gankoomon's instructions. Haruka tries to search for a weapon using the transfer gadget, but instead found several seemingly useless accessories, including Hawkmon's headband, Agumon Hakase's hat and Etemon's microphone. As a result of his reckless actions, Haruka put himself in a situation where he was vulnerable to Vajramon and directly in front of the Digimon itself, and Pajiramon takes the chance to ambush Gankoomon, which he avoids. Gankoomon realizes that he is fighting two Digimon at the same time and asks Hinukamuy to cover for Pajiramon's Bǎo Gōng arrows, which do not hit for much damage but can put him to sleep and render Hinukamuy and Haruka vulnerable. At the meantime, Gankoomon realizes that he had to fight two Digimon alone at once with Haruka being uncooperative, so he knocks down Vajramon as soon as Hinukamuy is put to sleep and escapes to give Haruka a scolding. When he asks him what was he thinking with his reckless actions, Haruka tells him that he had to become stronger and Gankoomon smacks his face and gives him a lecture about how he will not go as far as he did without his help, and that it does not make him weak. Gankoomon continues that just because Haruka is unable to fight, it doesn't make him a weakling, and he should lead the way as he does the combat, citing that this is what made them partners. Gankoomon then vows to Haruka that he will protect him and that he is not alone, and Haruka apologizes for his actions prior.
At the meantime, Vajramon woke up and re-assumes attacking Gankoomon and Haruka. Without Hinukamuy, he decides that the best way of action is to take it down in one Tekken Seisai. Gankoomon then turns to Haruka and asks him to scream at Etemon's microphone for a loud noise so he could carve a distraction. Gankoomon asks Vajramon if it trained with him in the Digital World, but it ignores the inquiry and attacks him. As Vajramon is about to use Rodha, Haruka manages to interrupt the attack with Etemon's microphone, creating an opening where Gankoomon can strike him down in one hit. After Vajramon was defeated, Gankoomon asks Haruka to lead him to the top of the building where it's in. Pajiramon lacks any abilities in close-quarter combat, so Gankoomon takes it out in one hit as well.
Gankoomon asks Aero V-dramon to transfer the Deva back to the Digital World, and vows to Vajramon that they will train again someday. Before they return to the Digital World, the Deva warn Gankoomon that a powerful Digimon controlled and used them, and if even prestigious Digimon like them can be controlled, there is little guarantee that a member of the Royal Knights cannot be controlled by it, and asks if Gankoomon can stop that Digimon. Gankoomon tells them that he will stop the true culprit. Once they get back home, Haruka tells Gankoomon that he saw a nightmare where his father left him behind and a voice told him that he was too weak, and while he saw Pajiramon's arrow there, the voice was not those of the Deva's. Gankoomon playfully bonks Haruka's head and tell him that if something is amiss, he must tell him, and informs him that Haruka only talked about his son and his desire to show his son the Digital World, and the gadget he invented. He then explains that the prototype gadget is consisted of Digimon data he helped him collect, and in other words, it was a journal for his own adventures he made for his son, and that he did not think that he abandoned him because he was weak, but he wanted to teach through actions and not by words. Haruka tells him that he still does not understand and wants to talk with his father if he had the chance to, at which Gankoomon replies that it depends if they could solve this case with a worried look. Haruka replies that his father is still not as strong as Gankoomon is, at which he reassures him of his might.
On that night, Gankoomon reminiscences about Hackmon, and questions himself if he truly should speak to Haruka like that.
On Episode 3, Haruka informs Gankoomon that several of his classmates were missing and school is cancelled, and that the missing person cases have increased as does the number of Digimon appearing. To make things worse, massive, Ultimate-level Digimon such as Metal Seadramon are appearing, and chances are the towering Examon might appear as well. Haruka conjectures that the mastermind is summoning Digimon of increasing size so it could send a really massive one at the end. Gankoomon furthers Haruka's theory that the mastermind is likely a Digimon of such a massive size that it was unable to fully manifest in the human world, so it has to reduce the number of people to a certain extent, and after it forced its way into the Digital World, it will appear in the human world and turn it into a deserted land. Gankoomon then continues, telling Haruka that he is unclear if the mastermind Digimon was trying to relocate into or invade the human world. As they were continuing the conversation, JESmon appears destroying the walls of the Kawashima household and attacks Gankoomon. He calls it its old name Hackmon, but Jesmon only coldly tells him not to refer it in that name, as it is now JESmon. The two move outside to fight where JESmon gets the upper hand, eventually landing onto a park. Gankoomon asks JESmon what is its purpose here and does it know anything about the mastermind. JESmon tells him that the Digimon will conquer the real world, then goes on about how humans have no chance against Digimon and that he knew Hajime was negotiating with them, and that Digimon will defeat the human species and become stronger with it in charge as the next pillar of the Royal Knights. Gankoomon tells JESmon that strength is not merely about fighting and defeating others, but JESmon coldly rebukes him that strength is the only thing that matters in the Digital World using Gankoomon himself as an example. The two returned to exchanging blows as Gankoomon tells JESmon that it is on the wrong path and he will correct his mistakes by defeating him. JESmon continues to gain the upper hand until it counters Gankoomon's Chabudai Gaeshi with its own Schwertgeist, which allowed Gankoomon to step on its head and try to negotiate with it. He asks JESmon to surrender, only for it to tell him that it must defeat Gankoomon and surpass him in the same wording as the brainwashed Haruka prior. Gankoomon noticed its eyes and realized that it was the same as the ones exhibited by Hajime, Haruka and other berserk Digimon, indicating that it was also mind-controlled.
In shock, Gankoomon asks JESmon who lured it into this, but it refuses to respond and tries to stab Gankoomon with the sword on its tail. Before he could however, Haruka arrives in time to summon Arkhai Angemon's Holy Rod, protecting him with his Brave Aura. JESmon turns its attention to Haruka, using Aus Generics to teleport itself towards him, impaling him by the collar of his shirt and calling him a pitiful human waving a keepsake from his father. At the meantime, a massive Digimon appears, and JESmon throws Haruka away and moves towards it. The two then lie on the grassy field with Haruka asking Gankoomon if his father was dead as the massive Digimon manifests itself. This Digimon is Leviamon of the Seven Great Demon Lords, who has successfully entered the real world taking advantage of the disappearances and the berserk Digimon, its towering stature looming across the city.
Upon witnessing Leviamon, Gankoomon admits that it was his fault that Hackmon was brainwashed and Leviamon was able to appear in the human world. He regretfully tells Haruka that he was supposed to be a Royal Knight, but he cannot stop a Demon Lord from appearing there. Hajime however, gives him words of encouragement that snaps him out of his self-loathing, and the two board Aero V-dramon to reach Leviamon. Gankoomon tells Aero V-Dramon that the towering Digimon was Leviamon, the only one of the Seven Great Demon Lords that the Royal Knights failed to monitor and that nobody has saw it before, likely because it ate everything that went near it. He further concludes that it cannot move yet because of the gravity, and it needs some time to accustom to the conditions of the human world. Therefore, they must defeat JESmon and send Leviamon back to the human world before it adapts to the gravity and can freely move around. Haruka agrees that Gankoomon will be fighting JESmon and Haruka and Aero V-dramon will be on standby to prepare the gadget for transferring Leviamon. However, once Leviamon is transferred, the gadget will break.
Seeing Gankoomon's arrival, Leviamon beseeches JESmon to defeat Gankoomon to prove its worth by defeating Gankoomon to cement its status as the strongest of the Royal Knights, driving it completely insane. JESmon attacks Gankoomon and heavily injures him with Tekken Seibai. Gankoomon creates a distraction by kicking him away, lying on the floor weakened. Seeing this, Haruka conjures Craniummon's Claíomh Solais and throws it towards Gankoomon, who uses it to break JESmon's sword with Waltz's End, defeating him. JESmon returns back to his senses, and Gankoomon embraces it, apologizing to it that he did not face it directly and only told him to follow by example, and telling it that they will get stronger until Digimon no longer need to rely on their fists and swords. JESmon tells Gankoomon that he is still in his Ultimate form, but it devolves into Hackmon soon after. Gankoomon then entrusts protecting Hackmon to Haruka and tells him that he will send Leviamon back.
Leviamon then tries to beseech Gankoomon and break his will, but unlike the others and to its bewilderment, it failed to mentally affect Gankoomon as he admits that even if he only knew how to strike others with his fists, he learnt to and will keep getting along with others, including Leviamon, and that not only he is one of the Royal Knights, he is also incredibly stubborn. Leviamon tries to kill him with Rostrum, but Gankoomon uses Tekken Seisai and finishes him in one hit. Haruka's gadget then transfers Leviamon back to the Digital World, warping him in as well.
Following this incident, Gankoomon returns to the Digital World to work for Hajime again, and the two moved back and forth between the human and Digital Worlds to restore them from the incident prior. He is also continuing to mentor Hackmon. He himself speaks to Haruka in a webcam chat, telling him that if he had any time, he should return to the Digital World to ride Trailmon together.
