The Four Holy Beasts (四聖獣 Shiseijuu) are four Ultimate level digimon that reign over the north, south, east, and west of the Digital World. (Dub: Harmonious Ones in Digimon Adventure, Digimon Sovereign in Digimon Tamers)

Members and Alignment[edit]

Each of the Four Holy Beasts reigns over one of the cardinal points of the Digital World, North, South, East and West. They are also represented by three each of the Twelve Deva which correspond to their Attribute. There is also a fifth member, Huanglongmon, who represents and is enshrined in the "Center", from which he supervises the others.

Each of them have twelve external Digicores floating around their bodies. Xuanwumon's twelve are in a circle around its tree trunk, Zhuqiaomon has six around its neck and six around its tail, Qinglongmon has three in each of its four sets of claws, Baihumon's twelve are in a circle around its torso, and Huanglongmon's are in two parallel rows of six along its back.

Other Information[edit]

The Four Holy Beasts are derived from the Japanese myth of the Four Guardian Spirits of Kyoto, itself derived from the Chinese myth of the Four Symbols. In ancient Chinese astronomy, the sky is divided into sections, and each section is assigned a mythological creature. Belief in the Four Symbols eventually spread to other parts of Asia, including Japan.

  • Qinglongmon is based on the Azure Dragon (青龙; Chinese: Qīng Lóng, Japanese: Seiryū), who is assigned to the East.
  • Zhuqiaomon is based on the Vermilion Bird (朱雀; Chinese: Zhū Què, Japanese: Suzaku), who is assigned to the South.
  • Baihumon is based on the White Tiger (白虎; Chinese: Baí Hǔ, Japanese: Byakko), who is assigned to the West.
  • Xuanwumon is based on the Black Turtle (玄武; Chinese: Xuán Wū, Japanese: Genbu), who is assigned to the North.
  • Huanglongmon is based on the Yellow Dragon (黄龙; Chinese: Huáng Lóng, Japanese: Kōryū or Ōryū), who is assigned to the Center.

Haruhiko, a professor at Kyoto University, and Shuu, his student, explain to her about Kyoto's importance to the Digital World, telling her that Kyoto is the place where it is said that the barrier between the two worlds are at their weakest and that's why Digimon were able to pass. They explain to her about the Four Holy Beasts, who guard the four cardinal points of the city and protect it from evil spirits.

In Digimon Adventure 02 - Episode 37, while protecting the last of the Holy Stones, the Chosen Children use their D-3s on the stone to release Qinglongmon. Qinglongmon explains that the Dark Masters had sealed away the Four Holy Beasts, but remained sealed even as the Dark Masters were defeated. To break the seal, the Chosen had to return to the Digital World and give up the power of their Crests.
