Digimon Xros Wars (デジモンクロスウォーズ Dejimon Kurosu Wōzu), pronounced "Digimon Cross Wars", is the sixth television anime series in the Digimon franchise, produced by Toei Animation. It premiered in Japan on TV Asahi on July 6, 2010, at 7:27 PM (UTC+9), more than three years after the conclusion of Digimon Savers. It is known internationally as Digimon Fusion or Digimon Fusion Battles.
The series follows Kudou Taiki, a boy whose determination to help others brings him into the Digital World, where rival armies compete for control of its fragmented territories. Together with Shoutmon, he establishes Xros Heart and opposes the expanding Bagra Army. Central to the conflict is DigiXros, through which human Generals use their Xros Loaders to combine Digimon into new forms, weapons, and equipment. The story continues in Digimon Xros Wars: The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdoms, followed by Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time. A manga adaptation presents an alternative continuity.
Digimon Xros Wars replaced Kaidan Restaurant 「怪談レストラン」 and, on ANN affiliates, Stitch! ~The Mischievous Alien's Great Adventure~ 「スティッチ！ 〜いたずらエイリアンの大冒険〜」 (ANN Only). It was the first Digimon television anime to air on a network other than Fuji TV, to premiere on a Tuesday rather than in the traditional Sunday 9:00 AM (UTC+9) timeslot, and to be broadcast in high definition and widescreen. In April 2011, it moved to TV Asahi's Sunday 6:30 AM (UTC+9) timeslot, where it remained until its conclusion in March 2012. It was replaced by Saint Seiya Omega 「聖闘士星矢Ω」 in April 2012.
History[edit]
News regarding this series emerged in April 2010, where it was revealed by Fumuo de Pon that a set of Digimon straps for what was described as being a "new Digimon anime premiering on television throughout Japan!", alongside other capsule toy releases from Bandai Vendor Division.[1] This indicated that the animation style would be reminiscent of and similar to that of the first four series. The title of the series, as well as the name of the main protagonist were revealed in the June 2010 issue of V Jump magazine.
Later, in the July 2010 issue of V Jump, the main characters as well as the cast, new card game and digivice were revealed. A manga based on Xros Wars was also announced, to be launched in the August 2010 issue of V Jump. Coinciding with the release of this issue, the official Toei site updated with information which included the staff working on the series, more of the cast as well as identifying two new Digimon names in addition to the ones previously revealed.
A small, three second teaser was shown during the broadcast of the twenty-first episode of Kaidan Restaurant followed by a second, longer commercial which aired during its finale. On the day prior to the release of the August 2010 issue of V Jump, which included the first chapter of the manga, the name of a theme song, two more new Digimon, more information regarding Digimon armies among other things, a third commercial was broadcast.
Coinciding with the release of the August 2010 issue of V Jump, both the Toei and Asahi sites for Digimon Xros Wars officially opened as well as a complete revamp of the Digimon Web portal page, having emphasis on Digimon Xros Wars based products.
It was rumored through various Japanese blogs back in late 2009, that the original series was named "Digimon Around" (デジモンアラウンド). According to this alleged early information leak, the anime was set to premiere in Spring 2010. This information has never been officially confirmed.
Story[edit]
Possessing outstanding reflexes, Kudou Taiki is a kind-hearted boy who participates in various sports clubs and cannot refuse anyone asking for help. One day, after basketball practice, he hears a mysterious melody. Listening closely, he realizes that it carries the faint voice of someone close to death, crying out for help.
When Shoutmon's heart responds to Taiki's voice, a mysterious device called the Xros Loader appears before him. Chosen to wield it as a General, Taiki saves Shoutmon by drawing his fading melody into the device. He is then transported to the Digital World alongside his childhood friend, Hinomoto Akari, and his classmate and self-proclaimed rival, Tsurugi Zenjirou.
There, the Bagra Army is advancing across the Digital World in pursuit of absolute supremacy. Shoutmon and his companions' peaceful village is under attack, and even Ballistamon's tremendous strength is insufficient to repel the invaders. Revived within Taiki's Xros Loader, Shoutmon emerges to fight alongside his friends, but the enemy soon drives them into a corner. When Taiki intervenes to protect him, the Xros Loader responds to his determination, combining Shoutmon and Ballistamon through DigiXros.
With this new power, Taiki and his companions repel the attackers and establish Xros Heart. Taiki agrees to support Shoutmon's ambition to become the Digimon King after learning that he seeks the title to protect his friends and restore peace. Their army travels through the Digital World, gathering allies such as Dorulumon and opposing the Bagra Army's conquests.
Along the way, they encounter Aonuma Kiriha, a boy in Taiki's school year who commands Greymon and the army Blue Flare. His strength and determination make him a formidable rival, while the mysterious Amano Nene watches both armies and pursues objectives of her own. As their paths intersect, the struggle to determine the Digital World's future draws them into the Xros Wars.
Overview[edit]
After hearing Shoutmon's plea for help, Taiki searches for the source of the mysterious melody. During the resulting disturbances, he, Akari, and Zenjirou narrowly escape a car falling from a building. A mysterious voice then instructs Taiki to follow a light, leading him to the Xros Loader. After he accepts the device and saves Shoutmon, the three humans are drawn through a tunnel-like passage in Digital Space and arrive in Green Zone.
Their arrival places them in the middle of an attack by Mad Leomon and the Bagra Army. Taiki meets Shoutmon, Ballistamon, and their companions, using DigiXros to turn the battle in their favor. Following further attacks on the Village of Smiles, Xros Heart defeats Mad Leomon and obtains Green Zone's Code Crown.
Nene explains that the Digital World is divided into Zones, each associated with a Code Crown. These fragments represent authority over their respective territories and allow Generals to travel between Zones using their Xros Loaders. Gathering all 108 fragments makes it possible to reconstruct the fragmented Digital World, making them the principal objective of the competing armies.
Xros Heart travels from Zone to Zone, protecting local communities from the Bagra Army and collecting Code Crowns. Its membership grows as Digimon join Taiki and Shoutmon's cause, introducing new combinations and applications of DigiXros. Their opponents include the Bagra Army's Three Head Officers, Tactimon, Lilithmon, and Blastmon, who direct the campaign of conquest on behalf of Bagramon.
Taiki's approach repeatedly brings him into conflict with Kiriha, who places greater emphasis on military strength and initially considers compassion for weaker Digimon a liability. Nevertheless, Xros Heart and Blue Flare cooperate against common enemies, gradually developing a relationship that extends beyond their rivalry.
Nene is revealed to be the General of Twilight, although her actions are controlled by Dark Knightmon. Exploiting her concern for her younger brother, Amano Yuu, he makes her assist his efforts to gather dark energy. After learning of her circumstances, Taiki follows Twilight to Dust Zone and helps rescue her. Nene subsequently breaks away from Dark Knightmon and joins Xros Heart with her loyal Digimon.
After Xros Heart obtains the final unclaimed Code Crown in Sword Zone, the Digital World's reconstruction begins. However, Bagramon intervenes, seizes the collected fragments, and sends Taiki, Akari, Zenjirou, and Shoutmon back to the Real World. There, Tactimon attacks Tokyo after absorbing digital energy, forcing the group to defend their own world. With Akari and Zenjirou's support, Shoutmon evolves into Omega Shoutmon and defeats him.
Taiki then learns that the voice which gave him his Xros Loader belongs to Omegamon. Warned that Bagramon has taken control of the Digital World, he chooses to return with Shoutmon. Since Omegamon can only send one human back, Akari and Zenjirou remain in the Real World. Taiki's return marks the beginning of the campaign depicted in Digimon Xros Wars: The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdoms.
Setting[edit]
The principal setting is the Digital World, a world inhabited by Digimon that has been fragmented into 108 independent Zones. These territories have different environments and communities, ranging from villages and kingdoms to technologically advanced cities. They are separated from one another by Digital Space.
Each Zone is associated with a fragment of the Code Crown, possession of which represents authority over that territory. By inserting a Code Crown into a Xros Loader, a General can initiate Change Zone and travel between Zones. Gathering all 108 fragments makes it possible to reconstruct the Digital World.
The struggle for the Code Crowns brings several armies into conflict. The Bagra Army, led by Bagramon, seeks to unite the Digital World under its rule, while Xros Heart, Blue Flare, and Twilight pursue their respective objectives. Human Generals use Xros Loaders to support their armies and perform DigiXros, combining Digimon into new forms, weapons, and equipment.
Although separate from the Real World, the Digital World is increasingly affected by the development of human digital technology, which brings the two worlds closer together. Connections between them allow humans and Digimon to cross between worlds under particular circumstances.

- Hagurumon: Grand Locomon's subordinate, who assists him in controlling Dust Zone.
Items[edit]
- Xros Loader: A mysterious, legendary device used by the Generals. Initially silvery-white, it changes color when its user declares their full name. It stores and heals Digimon, materializes them through the command "Reload", performs DigiXros, and activates DigiMemories. Inserting a Code Crown allows its user to travel between Zones through Change Zone.
- Wrister: A wristwatch-shaped communication device carried by members of Xros Heart, allowing them to remain in contact when separated.
- Code Crown: An SD memory card-shaped fragment of the Digital World's core. Each of the 108 Zones has one, and possession represents authority over that territory. A Zone's Code Crown can restore damage caused during battles, while gathering all 108 fragments allows the Digital World to be reconstructed.
- Darkness Loader: An artifact activated by Dark Knightmon using accumulated dark energy. It enables Forced DigiXros, combining Digimon against their will. Copies are later supplied to the Death Generals, while Amano Yuu uses the original.

Digimon Xros Wars: The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdoms[edit]
Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time[edit]
Concepts[edit]
- DigiXros: A process in which multiple Digimon combine into a stronger form, weapons, or equipment through a Xros Loader. The participating Digimon retain their consciousness and cooperate within the combined form.
- Forced DigiXros: A combination performed through a Darkness Loader, which can forcibly merge Digimon regardless of their wishes.
- General: The commander of a Digimon Army. Human Generals use Xros Loaders to command their companions and perform DigiXros.
- Digimon Army: An organized force of Digimon fighting under a common leader. The principal armies are Xros Heart, Blue Flare, Twilight, and the Bagra Army.
- Digimon King: The title sought by Shoutmon, who wishes to unite the Digital World and establish peace for its inhabitants.
- Zone: One of the 108 territories into which the Digital World is divided. Each has a Code Crown representing authority over it, and the Bagra Army seeks to conquer them all.
- Digital Space: The space separating the Zones. Generals travel through it when moving between Zones, and Digimon such as Wisemon and Arkadimon inhabit it.
- Land: One of the seven kingdoms created when Bagramon restructures the Digital World, each governed by a Death General.
- Super Evolution: An evolution that allows a Digimon to attain a stronger form rather than combine with others. Shoutmon first becomes Omega Shoutmon through this process during the battle against Tactimon in the Real World.
Episodes[edit]
At the end of each episode there is "Monitamon's Reconnaissance is Wonderful" (eventually replaced by "Digimon Data Collection"), a segment that reports data on a random Digimon.
Manga[edit]
Development[edit]
Casting of staff and voice actors for Digimon Xros Wars was largely influenced by Gegege no Kitarō (2007) and Hakaba Kitarō (2008).[3][4]
Due to impacts from the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and as part of Toei's promotion for the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Dragon Ball, Toei decided to release DragonBall Kai and discontinue Gegege no Kitarō (2007), resulting in the transfer of Digimon Xros Wars to TV Asahi's slot (see here for more details).[5]
Breaking with franchise traditions was a repeated goal with Xros Wars. According to Series Composer Sanjou Riku, the team wanted to avoid making weaker evolutions obsolete toward the end of the story, so to compensate they chose to make the heroes capable of going against strong, Ultimate-class villains from the beginning, and mixing strong and weak enemies in an area similar to traditional RPG games. However, they still chose to illustrate a hierarchy of strength via methods like crossing the dimensional walls between Zones. According to Sanjou, another primary goal was to heavily incorporate the them of "sound" into the series, under the concepts that "Sound equates to Data" and "Sound is Life". The symbolic Xros Loader and its real-life toy both operate by detecting sound clips, several of the hero Digimon have designs incorporating musical tools or instruments, and Digimon are shown being born from sound. To cap this off, the team put great focus into series' original soundtrack, with Sanjou writing several lyrics to ensure that the central concepts were clear to the audience.
According to Sanjou, the third arc of the series reorganized duties so that the producer was in charge of overall planning and would hand the plan to a scriptwriter for completion. As he previously fulfilled a similar role for the first two arcs, Sanjou was made the Main Writer and performed the same overall tasks for this last arc.

Trivia[edit]
- Despite featuring a large number of songs throughout its run, Digimon Xros Wars did not have a dedicated ending theme. According to the series' producer, this was an intentional decision, as they wanted to maintain the momentum of each episode and keep viewers anticipating the next one.
- The landscape featured in the first episode of Digimon Xros Wars, Taiki, Go to Another World!, appears in one of the panels of Digimon Universe Appli Monsters (Manga).
