Chosen Child

A Chosen Child (選ばれし子供 Erabareshi Kodomo; Dub: DigiDestined) is a specific type of Tamer, humans partnered with a partner Digimon and wielding a form of Digivice. Though the name suggests that a Chosen Child must be a child, and the majority are indeed children, adult Chosen are known to exist and a Chosen Child remains a Chosen even after maturing to adulthood.

Chosen Children are defined as being specifically "chosen" by a higher power of the Digital World, summoned and granted a partner Digimon by said higher power for the purpose of defending the Digital World from an impending threat. Like Tamers, Chosen Children use their Digivice, sometimes in conjunction with other items, to enable their Digimon to artificially evolve temporarily in order to challenge the threats to the Digital World.

Known Chosen Children[edit]

Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Adventure tri.[edit]

In the Digimon Adventure canon, the prerequisite for becoming a Chosen Child is having witnessed an encounter with Digimon earlier in their life. This initial encounter makes an individual eligible for becoming a Chosen Child, scrutinised by an unidentified power; however, not all who witness the event will be chosen.[1]

Chosen Children live all over the world, but do not seem to universally call themselves "Chosen Children" and instead have different terms for themselves in different languages. For example, Dingo, an English-speaking Australian Chosen Chosen, refers to himself as a "DigiDestiny" (a mistaking of the English dub's "DigiDestined").[2]

Original Chosen Children[edit]

Years before the adventures of the Chosen Children group led by Yagami Taichi, a different group of five Chosen Children were summoned to the Digital World and given partner Digimon. These five Chosen were the first to challenge and defeat Apocalymon, imprisoning him.[3] Their identities and partner Digimon are never seen in the show, and the sequence revealing they exists depicts them using silhouettes of Taichi, Takaishi Takeru, Takenouchi Sora, Izumi Koushiro and Ishida Yamato as placeholders.

In Digimon Adventure: Novel, it is mentioned that four of the Chosen Children's partner Digimon eventually evolved to become the Four Holy Beasts, assuming the role to protect the Digital World. The Digimon of that era recorded the Digimon in that event in the "Book of Digimon Revelation" and passed it down to the future generation.

Later, in Digimon Adventure tri., they are revealed as Nishijima Daigo (partnered with Bearmon/Loader Liomon), Himekawa Maki (partnered with Bakumon/Megadramon), and three other as-of-yet unknown children (partnered with Orochimon/Xuanwumon, Hippogriffomon and Triceramon). Triceramon, Hippogriffomon and Loader Liomon are shown to evolve to either Qinglongmon, Zhuqiaomon and Baihumon.

Digimon Frontier[edit]

The six Chosen Children of Digimon Frontier were chosen through a "game" conducted by Ofanimon; when Ofanimon sent a summons to children across Tokyo, the six were the only ones to respond to the call. These six Chosen Children, rather than being partnered with Digimon, instead wield the Legendary Spirits of the late Warrior Ten, using them to transform into Digimon themselves.
