Digimon Battle Terminal 02
Ultimate Fighting!! Digimon Battle Terminal 02 (究極対戦!!デジモンバトルターミナル02, Kyūkyoku Taisen!! Dejimon Batoru Tāminaru 02) is a collectible card-based arcade game in the Data Carddass series and the successor to Digimon Battle Terminal. It began operation in Japan on August 8, 2007.
The game continued the storyline of the original Battle Terminal under the title L&R Wars and was developed in conjunction with the Digimon Twin. Players could scan compatible Digital Monster Card Game Alpha cards or connect a Digimon Twin to deploy Digimon in a series of battles. Three principal card sets and six software versions were released between August and December 2007.
Development and release[edit]
Battle Terminal 02 succeeded the original Digimon Battle Terminal, whose seventh and final version had been released in May 2007. While the original game was developed alongside Digimon Savers, the Digivice iC and the early Digital Monster Card Game Alpha sets, Battle Terminal 02 shifted its focus toward the Digimon Twin and the tenth-anniversary Digimon storyline.
The first version began operation on August 8, 2007, alongside the first card set. The second set followed on September 28, while the third and final set was released on December 20. Although only three physical card sets were published, the arcade software received six versions, which successively introduced new stages, opponents and boss battles.
Dracomon, the Digimon created to commemorate the franchise's tenth anniversary, was prominently featured in the game alongside its evolved forms. Victory Greymon, Z'd Garurumon, Examon, the Four Holy Beasts, Huanglongmon and Ogudomon also played major roles in its releases and associated storyline.
Story[edit]
Following the defeat of the Seven Great Demon Lords during the first Terminal War, the Demon Lords release a destructive Crack Program known as Tempest. The program spreads throughout the Digital World and erodes the data of infected Digimon, causing them to lose control of themselves. The Four Holy Beasts, who govern the Digital World's four principal regions, are among those affected.
At the same time, two groups of Tamers emerge around the newly developed Digimon Twin devices: the R Army, associated with Revolution and Dragon Digimon that specialize in power, and the L Army, associated with Liberation and Beast Digimon that specialize in speed. Although both groups seek to eliminate Tempest, their differing methods lead them into conflict over which side possesses the strongest Digimon.
The Tamers enter the Digital World through the Battle Terminal 02 machines and travel across File Island, the Folder Continent and other regions while battling the infected Digimon. Commander Yuu, an accomplished Tamer capable of using both versions of the Digimon Twin, oversees the conflict and organizes the D-1 L&R Battle with the intention of identifying the strongest Tamers and ultimately uniting the rival armies.
The four infected Holy Beasts are confronted in succession. Baihumon appears in the western region of the Folder Continent, Xuanwumon in the Forest of the Gods, and Qinglongmon and Zhuqiaomon on the WWW Continent. After their defeat, a previously unknown continent appears between the four regions. There, the Tamers confront Huanglongmon, the ruler of the Four Holy Beasts, followed by Ogudomon, a Super Demon Lord embodying the power of the Seven Great Demon Lords.
Gameplay[edit]
Each play costs ¥100 and dispenses one card. After inserting a coin, the player has 20 seconds to select one of three options using the cabinet's colored buttons:
- Buy a Card — Selected with the red button. The machine dispenses a card without beginning a battle.
- Start Game — Selected with the green button. The player begins a standard arcade session using scanned cards.
- Digivice Mode — Selected with the blue button. The player connects a compatible Digimon Twin and uses its Digimon in the arcade game.
In the standard game mode, the player scans compatible Digimon and Option Cards through the barcode reader. Every Digimon Card records information such as the Digimon's Level, Attribute, Field, Battle Type, HP, Speed, attacks and special abilities. Option Cards produce supplementary effects that can strengthen the player's Digimon, interfere with opponents or alter battle conditions.
The player advances through a succession of rounds by defeating computer-controlled opponents. Battles use the three attack types—A, B and C—printed on each Digimon Card. The attack performed by a Digimon is determined by the opposing Digimon's Battle Type, while Speed influences the order in which the combatants act. Card effects and commands selected during battle can modify the resulting attack power.
The game generates a D-Pass after play. This password records the player's progress and can be entered during a later session to continue the game rather than beginning again from the first round.
Certain versions include special rounds beyond the regular progression. Versions 1 and 2 feature a hidden Round X in addition to the standard fifteenth-round boss, while later versions focus on successive members of the Four Holy Beasts and the enemies connected to Tempest.
Digimon Twin compatibility[edit]
Battle Terminal 02 was designed to interact with both versions of the Digimon Twin. The R device emphasizes Dragon Digimon and power, while the L device emphasizes Beast Digimon and speed. Connecting a device through Digivice Mode allows the player to use a Digimon raised in the Digimon Twin in the arcade game.
This compatibility also forms the basis of the game's L&R Wars storyline. Players are associated with one of the two armies according to the Digimon Twin version they use, with Commander Yuu acting as an intermediary between the rival groups.
Changes from Battle Terminal[edit]
Battle Terminal 02 retains the card-scanning and command-based battles of its predecessor while introducing several new features:
- Compatibility with the Digimon Twin L and R.
- The L and R army system forming the basis of the L&R Wars.
- Digivice Mode, through which a Digimon raised in a compatible device can be used.
- D-Pass passwords that allow progress to be continued in later sessions.
- New stages based on several regions of the Digital World.
- A storyline centered on the Tempest Program, the Four Holy Beasts and the renewed activity of the Seven Great Demon Lords.
- New card numbers beginning with DM02 for Digimon Cards and OP02 for Option Cards.
- The arcade debuts of Digimon connected to the franchise's tenth anniversary, including Dracomon, Victory Greymon, Z'd Garurumon and Examon.
Cards from Battle Terminal 02 remain part of the broader Digital Monster Card Game Alpha system. In addition to their arcade barcodes, they contain the statistics, evolution requirements and effects needed for use in the physical card game.
Cards[edit]
Two principal card types were released:
- Digimon Cards — Represent the Digimon deployed in battle. Their card numbers use the DM02 prefix.
- Option Cards — Activate supplementary effects during battle. Their card numbers use the OP02 prefix.
Across its three principal sets, Battle Terminal 02 introduced 120 numbered Digimon Cards and 35 numbered Option Cards. The sets contain both newly introduced cards and alternate versions of Digimon already represented elsewhere in the Digital Monster Card Game Alpha.
Several promotional cards were also distributed separately through magazines, events, campaigns and related products.
