Jogmon
Jogmon (ジョグモン), also known as the Jogmon Ultimate Card Game (ジョグモンアルティメットカードゲーム) is an in-game card game in Digimon Story: Time Stranger. Jogmon is a game played by both humans and various Digimon, including Digimon inhabitants of Digital World: Iliad, the Titans, and even the visiting Royal Knights. The player (as Yuki Dan/Yuki Kanan) collects and plays this game.
The "Jogmon Ultimate Card Game" name is a play on the various Digimon card games, such as the Digital Monster Card Game, Digital Monster Card Game Alpha, and Digimon Card Game. Notably, "Jogmon" comes from "Jogress" (ジョグレス), which itself is a portmanteau of "Joint" and "Progress” to refer to Evolution via fusion. As such, the "Jogmon" name refers to the card combination mechanic of the game.
Overview[edit]
Rather than a customizable deck, the player loads into a battle with a random assortment of cards in their existing collection. More cards are collected during the game, including as purchasable shop items. New cards can also be formed through various combinations of cards in hand during a battle. Winning a battle allows players to select a certain number of cards used by the opponent.
All cards are of Digimon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, with every obtainable Digimon in the base game having a Jogmon card, with the exception of Kudamon (2006 Anime Version), Magna Garurumon (Detached), and Yatagaramon (2006 Anime Version). No DLC Digimon, whether from the pre-order DLC (like Agumon (Black)), the Additional Digimon & Episode Packs (like Omegamon Alter-S), or even from free DLC updates (like Terriermon Assistant) are including in Jogmon. Kudamon, Ukkomon, and Yatagaramon are the only cards in Jogmon that does not correspond to a Digimon obtainable in Time Stranger.
Rules[edit]
Players start a match with five cards in hand, and the player and opponent take turns selecting a card to play. There are five rounds in each match, meaning five cards will be selected by both the player and opponent. The cards then imitate a Virtual Pet battle using the in-game sprites, the player with the most wins at the end of the match is then declared the victor.
Jogmon uses the Attribute triangle to determine which Digimon wins a battle, as well as Evolution Stage (i.e. Child Digimon are "Lv.3" cards and will have an advantage against Baby II stage, or "Lv.2", cards). No advantage is absolute, instead these only increase the chances of a win rather than ensure one.
Depending on the cards left in hand, players have the ability to create new ones based on the combination selected. This element is the reason for the "Jogmon" name alluding to "Jogress".
Attribute[edit]
- Vaccine (advantage over Virus, disadvantage to Data)
- Data (advantage over Vaccine, disadvantage to Virus)
- Virus (advantage over Data, disadvantage to Vaccine)
- No Data (no advantages or disadvantages)
- Free (no advantages or disadvantages)
- Unknown (no advantages or disadvantages)
- Variable (no advantages or disadvantages)
Level[edit]
All Level numbers correspond to the expected Evolution Stage of a Digimon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger.
Baby I Digimon like Botamon are "Lv.1", while Super Ultimate Digimon like Omegamon are "Lv.7".
Armor and Hybrid Digimon are placed in various levels. Most Armor Digimon and Human Spirit Hybrid Digimon are "Lv.4" like Adult Digimon, while the Beast Spirit Hybrid Digimon are "Lv.5" like Perfect Digimon. Magnamon, Rapidmon (Gold), Aldamon, and Beowolfmon are "Lv.6", the level of an Ultimate. Kaiser Greymon and Magna Garurumon are "Lv.7" cards.
Card Combinations[edit]
Players can use combinations of the cards remaining in their hands to create brand new ones that can then be selected for battle against opponents. Standard combinations can be created when the player only has two cards remaining in hand, meaning three other cards had been used beforehand. Two cards of either the same Attribute create a card of the same Attribute but different Level. Two cards of the same Level, provided they are Lv.4 or lower cards, can create a new card of that same Level.
Unique combinations also exist, in which hands of 2 up to 5 have the potential to create a related card. For example, a combination of Agumon, Greymon, Metal Greymon, and War Greymon creates an Agumon -Yuki no Kizuna- card. In this case, the player would have used one of their five to ensure the remaining four cards are the aforementioned ones, with Agumon -Yuki no Kizuna- being added to the hand as a new fifth card.
