Abyss Area (アビス・エリア Abisu Eria) is an area in the Digital World: Iliad.
Overview[edit]
An area dominated by a vast expanse of ocean, and one of the largest regions in all of Iliad. Aquatic Digimon make up the core of its ecosystem, though many Digimon inhabit both its sea and land. Its shallow waters, rife with beautiful beaches and coral reefs, experience comparatively little conflict compared to other regions. The peace maintained here is proof of the careful governance of its guardian, Venusmon of the Olympos XII.[1]
This stands in contrast to its deep ocean, which is a perilous realm inhabited by ferocious Digimon. At its very bottom one can find the Abyss Sanctuary, the castle of Neptunemon, who serves alongside Venusmon as a guardian of the region as a fellow member of the Olympos XII.[1] Amphimon has intruded the Abyss Sanctuary using its Bodysuit to dive into the extreme depths of the sea.[2] It is said that whenever danger threatens the Abyss Area, Neptunemon will appear with an army of Aquatic Digimon under its command.[1]

Digimon Story: Time Stranger[edit]
The Abyss Area is the ocean of Iliad, where parts of the Energy Vein was housed in. It initially had no area guardian and only had a poorly-defended settlement. Across the village is the Abyss Beach where Shellmon's house was located in, and deep underwater is the Abyss Sanctuary which can only be accessed through Whamon. Both the Beach and the Sanctuary are sprawling with feral, aquatic Digimon that will attack the party on sight. Running is disabled in the beach's shallow waters (which can be bypassed with DigiRides).
Dan/Kanan, Misono Inori and Aegiomon first arrive here to suppress the Titans as a deal they made with Junomon in exchange for returning to the human world. There, they heard rumors of a Digimon called Shellmon who was suspected for being a traitor who secretly harbored a Titan in her house. In actuality, Shellmon was a very kind Digimon who was nursing an injured Titan Hangyomon regardless of him being the enemy. Once the party found out the truth, they go find some herbs for Shellmon to heal Hangyomon. Hangyomon was grateful of Shellmon's help and decides to defect from the Titans to help the party.
However, as the party were running errands for Shellmon, the village was destroyed, and all of its residents either died or escaped, including Shellmon herself. She left an instruction for the party to use her Conch to call Whamon, who will send them to the depths of the Abyss Area to confront the enemy. Hangyomon joins them to try appealing to his former boss Sharkmon, fighting against his former comrades on the way.
They manage to reach the Abyss Area depths, where Hangyomon promises to call his old friend, Submarimon, to help them transverse the rough water currents of the Abyss Area's waters and reach Sharkmon. The Agent suspects it to be a trap, but decides to stay there anyways as they have no choice but to trust Hangyomon's word. Despite they were ambushed by Titans, Hangyomon had nothing to do with them and he came back with Submarimon, allowing them to go confront Sharkmon.
Hangyomon tries to appeal to Sharkmon, which caused him to get mad and attack both him and the party. They manage to defeat Sharkmon and make him and his forces flee, but they already damaged the Energy Vein as intended and the village will be emptied for the rest of the game. A side mission reveals that Hangyomon will be rejoining the Titans to help safeguard the area.
8 years later, the area is compromised and occupied by the Titans. Because of the Energy Vein's destruction, the water on the surface is red and polluted, and nothing but Sukamon and Raremon will spawn there. Furthermore, an army of Titans had set camp underwater; Venusmon, the now-evolved Shellmon, intended to send their leader a sedative wine to help her negotiate with them. Unbeknown to its residents however, the Titan leader of the Abyss Area is actually the Area Guardian Neptunemon, the former rogue Hangyomon, who was safeguarding the waters from succumbing to the compromising of the Energy Vein. Neptunemon had no intent to destroy the place that he loved and cared about, so he constantly postponed Plutomon's orders to destroy it. As a result, Plutomon ordered Ranamon to trick Aegiomon into delivering him a bottle of poisoned wine and do the job in his place. It was heavily implied that this was a trick from Chronomon to destroy the Apostles of Iliad and send Aegiomon into despair.
It was also heavily implied that the Waru Seadramon of the original Abyss Area was turned into a Skull Seadramon through unknown means. If one pays very close attention, it can be seen swimming around the Sanctuary before it is fought.
In the original timeline, Ranamon successfully deceived the party to deliver the wine to Neptunemon. After the party finishes doing so, they report to Venusmon that they delivered the wine and the Titan leader was the same Hangyomon she saved 8 years ago. To their surprise however, Venusmon reacted to the news with horror. At the meantime, Neptunemon drank the wine and died to the poison, while it was heavily implied that Ranamon used Master Blimpmon (whom she blackmailed to be complacent) to pour poison into the seas, killing everything instantly, and Venusmon died to the weight of her guilt shortly after. The party was about to succumb as well, only for Aegiomon to send them back in time (although not before the Threshold Theater intercepts them and Mirei Mikagura requests them to view the Akashic Vision and meet the Host Computers).
After going back in time and confirming the situation, they approach Venusmon and warned her about the poison wine, and realized that Ranamon was tricking them. They give pursuit before she could fly off with Master Blimpmon, where she shows their true colors and attacks them. She was defeated and escapes to Neptunemon's throne room, while the party gives chase and warns Neptunemon not to drink the wine. Ranamon, realizing her schemes were exposed, turns into Calamaramon and attacks the party, only to be slain. Before dying however, Calamaramon tells Venusmon that she actually appreciated her time with Venusmon and was only doing her job to prove her worth to her peers.
