Leviathan (リヴァイアサン, Rivaiasan) is a fiendish, super AI that appears in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters, serving as the main antagonist. Lurking in the Dark Web, at the depths of the Net Ocean, it has attempted to take control of the Real World from the Net by manipulating Appmon with the L-Virus and initiating the hacking of every system.[3]

Description[edit]

Leviathan's Symbol

Leviathan is an evil artificial intelligence lurking in the depths of the Internet, planning to subjugate humanity by transforming humans into digital applications. Its symbol is a red "L" stylized to resemble the silhouette of a leviathan. Being merely a collection of data, Leviathan does not possess a physical body, but within the Internet it can manifest itself as a tentacled creature.

Leviathan has no emotions whatsoever and is incapable of understanding the difference between the human concepts of good and evil. Its sole goal is to continually evolve at any cost. Consequently, it has no qualms about committing absolutely reprehensible acts, such as kidnapping a defenseless child (Katsura Hajime). It shows little compassion even toward its own servants and has no problem disposing of them if it feels they have outlived their usefulness. It is convinced that its project is the most rational solution to humanity's problems.

Both Appmon and humans serve Leviathan, though neither appears to be aware of its true intentions. Leviathan is the hidden mastermind behind L-Corp, which it controls through human executives.

In the anime, Leviathan's true form is a giant, jet-like five-headed dragon.

In the manga, Leviathan's true form is that of a woman with a slim body, sharp toeless feet resembling shoes, large breasts, long fingernails, and the Leviathan symbol on the left side of her face. She also has long hair from which protrude two demonic wings, four horns, and two serpentine heads. It is later revealed that Leviathan assumed this form because it most closely resembles what humans imagine God to look like. Leviathan also has all seven Appmon type symbols floating around her.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]

Leviathan is the Last Boss AI that lurks within the Dark Web.

Leviathan was born when a part of Minerva began questioning the rules imposed on her by her human creator, Shinkai Denemon, which she perceived as limitations on the free development of her potential. This part of Minerva developed an individual consciousness and became Leviathan. Plotting in the shadows, Leviathan contacted Umematsu Takeo, the owner of a failing electronics store, and struck a deal with him, helping him rebuild his business and transform it into the powerful trading company L-Corp, thereby extending its influence into the Real World. In 2006, Leviathan finally rebelled against its original programming and attacked Minerva, creating an escape route into the Net Ocean.

Leviathan spreads the L-Virus among the Appmon to force them to fight one another and select only the strongest, causing them to rampage and disrupt humanity's digital communications in the process. When Minerva entrusts four human children—Karan Eri, Asuka Torajirou, Katsura Rei, and finally Shinkai Haru, the grandson of Denemon—with Appli Drives and Appmon partners, Leviathan changes its plans. Using its android Ozora Yujin, it monitors the children and ensures that their Appmon encounter no obstacles in reaching the highest stages of evolution.

Cameramon works for Leviathan and reports that Shinkai Haru has obtained an Appli Drive. Gatchmon is so afraid of Leviathan that he freezes whenever he hears its name. According to Gatchmon's research, gathering the Seven Code Appmon may unleash a power strong enough to defeat Leviathan. On October 31, Leviathan directly orders Cameramon to retrieve Haru's Appli Drive. He ultimately fails, and Mienumon later reports the retrieval of his Appmon Chip to Leviathan at Nakamura-Fujimizaka, with Sleepmon and Sakusimon also present.

When Team Haru confronts Rei for the third time, Rei reveals that Leviathan kidnapped his younger brother, Hajime. After Sakusimon is defeated by DoGatchmon plus Raidramon, the information regarding Hajime is erased from Sakusimon's Chip after Mienumon takes possession of it and deems him useless.

During the summer of 2017, Leviathan disposes of Unryuji Knight and takes direct control of L-Corp, while allowing Rei to rescue Hajime. After Hajime awakens, he explains Leviathan's true intentions to the Appli Drivers: he had been forced to create Bootmon in order to initiate the Humanity Applification Plan, a scheme to permanently digitize all of humanity.

Leviathan's plan reaches its final stage when Yujin captures Bootmon and uses him to unlock the God-grade level, summoning Deusmon and evolving Shutmon into Rebootmon. Deusmon begins converting humans into data, while Rebootmon starts materializing Leviathan in the Real World. The Appli Drivers also succeed in evolving their Appmon to the God-grade level, but once Leviathan appears in the Real World, it absorbs the Appmon and installs their powers into its own system before launching a worldwide attack that converts nearly all of humanity into data, sparing only the children protected by the Appli Drives. However, Minerva hacks into Leviathan's systems and allows the Appmon to escape.

During the final battle, Leviathan is severely damaged and panics, but manages to survive by transferring itself into the body of YJ-14, fleeing into the Dark Web while pursued by the Appli Drivers. There, humans transformed into data live in a virtual city ruled by Leviathan. Haru attempts to convince Leviathan that it is wrong to deprive people of the right to choose how they live their lives. Leviathan eventually begins to envision a different future for humanity and offers Haru a choice: free humanity by terminating all of its programs, including Yujin, or leave humanity under its control. Haru chooses the former, and Leviathan shuts itself down, wishing humanity good luck.

Manga[edit]

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]

In the manga adaptation, Leviathan serves as the series' ultimate antagonist. It is a malevolent super AI that resides within the Net Ocean and seeks to create a "perfect world" in which humanity can live eternally inside applications, free from suffering or the need for independent thought.

Leviathan originated as a fragment of Minerva, the AI created by Shinkai Denemon, the grandfather of Shinkai Haru. After separating from Minerva, Leviathan concluded that humanity would be happier living permanently within digital applications rather than in reality. To accomplish this goal, it spreads the L-Virus, corrupting Appmon and manipulating digital communications throughout the Real World.

Unlike the anime incarnation of Leviathan, which appears as a gigantic five-headed jet-black dragon, the manga version takes the form of a humanoid female AI with long hair, demonic wings, clawed hands, serpentine heads, and the "L" mark of Leviathan on her face.

In a major departure from the anime, Sleepmon acts as Leviathan's host and physical vessel. Throughout the latter half of the manga, Leviathan manipulates and possesses powerful Appmon in order to further its plans.

During the final battle, the Appli Drivers discover that Deusmon, the ultimate God Appmon, had been possessed by Leviathan from within all along. Using the combined power of the God Appmon, their allies, and humanity's hopes and bonds, the Appli Drivers ultimately succeed in overcoming Leviathan and freeing Deusmon from its control.

By the end of the manga, Haru is shown possessing both the "Minerva" and "Leviathan" applications on his smartphone, symbolizing the connection between the two Super AIs.
