Digimon (デジモン Dejimon), short for Digital Monsters (デジタルモンスター Dejitaru Monsutā)[N 1] is a media franchise that began as a series of Virtual Pets and later expanded to center around the creatures living inside them, which quickly eclipsed the popularity of the Virtual Pets themselves.

Originally based partially on its sister franchise Tamagotchi, the idea was to raise a creature called a Digimon that would evolve and change form depending on how it was cared for. Digimon could be pitted against each other in battle - the chief difference between Digimon and Tamagotchi. Digimon was designed to appeal to boys in the same way Tamagotchi were geared towards girls.

Over the years, Digimon became based around a structure in which the various dramas are created by the encounters between the human beings of our reality and the Digimon from the unusual Digital World. Digimon's existence is abnormal and they are drawn as monsters, however their common senses change through meetings between Digimon and humans, with whom new relationships are created.[2]

The original story behind Digimon is that mysterious beings, recognized as computer viruses, were publicly revealed in 1997 and are the target of investigations, used by hackers and trained through Virtual Pets by humans called Tamers.

The term Digimon may refer to the video game franchise, an individual Digimon, or a species of Digimon.

References Notes
  1. Digimon was formerly named Otokotchi (おとこっち Otokotchi), a portmanteau of Otoko (男), meaning "boy/male" in Japanese, and Tamagotchi, and later on changed to Capsule Zaurus (カプセルザウルス Kapuseru Zaurusu)[1]
