Virusmon are Leviathan's agents responsible for spreading the L-Virus. They first appear in "Haru and Yujin's Bond—Stop! Runaway Resshamon! ".
Mienumon wishes to analyze human behavior in panic situations and orders a Virusmon to infect Resshamon. The Virusmon is easily defeated by Gatchmon.
On Valentine's Day, Waffle Corp, a rival company of L-Corp, launches a new version of its smartphone operating system, Waffle OS 11. Mienumon hacks into the company's servers and infects them using Virusmon. However, the Appli Drivers and their Appmon intervene, and Globemon eliminates all the Virusmon, restoring Waffle OS to normal.
Several years later, Virusmon become the head of security at L-Corp headquarters, but are unable to prevent Katsura Rei from rescuing her brother.
An island inhabited by Virusmon is later discovered in the Surface Web.

In the manga version, after Sakusimon and his friends are defeated, Mienumon summons several more, cornering Haru and his friends. However, they are all annihilated by Globemon after fusing with Timemon.

Virusmon has the ability to infect other Appmon and convert them into Virus counterparts.
Kazuki/Itsuki first met a Virusmon inside Mio's broken smartphone in the AR-Field. Said Virusmon had chased Gatchmon from the Net Ocean into the smartphone then corrupted it. The protagonist then defeated Virusmon, fixing the smartphone and gaining Gatchmon's trust. However, the Virusmon ran away to the gas station, where it seemingly infected a Batterimon and caused it to run wild, then escaped into another AR Dungeon. The protagonist once again defeated it there but couldn't stop it from running away once more. What the protagonist and Onmon got out of the fight, however, was realizing that Virusmon itself was infected.
Afterwards, Virusmon escaped into the sewers and tried to infect Calcumon, but failed to. After the protagonist defeated it one last time, Virusmon was finally freed from its infection.
When Kazuki/Itsuki was about to face Kayo, the C-Rank Master, Ouji explained to them that he was interested in the Virusmon incidents happening everywhere. He added that Virusmon was an Appmon that possessed virus abilities that appeared in the Net Ocean at some point and began infecting other Appmon with viruses. Ouji reminded Kazuki/Itsuki that one such incident happened at their school with Protecmon getting infected, hence why he sent Kayo there to search for Virusmon traces. Ouji also sent Kazuki/Itsuki to investigate another Virusmon incident, this time with an infected Coordemon.
Later, when Kazuki/Itsuki went to look for Kayo's house, Ouji told them Virusmon was also around that same area so they should be careful. Indeed, they would find a vending machine with Virusmon's stench near Kayo's house. An uninfected Virusmon was in it who had just infected Kayo's Buddy Appmon, Copipemon, after having learned about an Appli Driver with Copipemon as their Buddy Appmon from someone. Virusmon had Copipemon use his powers on it, multiplying it into four Virusmon, which then ran away to cause chaos all over Yongendōri. Kazuki/Itsuki then pursued them, finding them at different AR Dungeons around Yongendōri. After Kazuki/Itsuki deleted two of the copies and Kayo one, the former found the real Virusmon and fought it. After they defeated it, Kayo and Copipemon showed up and Virusmon told them not to think it was the end before disappearing.
In reality, however, Kayo had not defeated but captured her Virusmon copy, which she later gave to Ouji, who needed it to progress to the next stage of his plan.
