In Digimon Adventure and its sequels, the Digital World (デジタルワールド Dejitaru Wārudo; Dub: Digital World/DigiWorld) is a parallel dimension situated within the Earth's computer networks.

Composition[edit]
The data that runs through the Earth's computer networks makes up all things in the Digital World, the same way that atoms do on Earth. Because of this, faulty or missing data in the networks can cause abnormalities in the Digital World.[1] The size, shape and layout of the Digital World all align with those of the Earth due to its existence inside Earth networks.[2]

Cosmology[edit]
The Digital World and the Real World are just two of many coexisting parallel worlds;[3] known other worlds include the Dark Ocean, and a "world of dreams" in which people's emotions can manifest as reality.[4] Apart from the Real World, all of these worlds arose from the primordial Quantum Sea, and are collectively known as the Quantized World 「量子化された世界 Ryōshika-sareta sekai」.[5]
For the continued survival of all worlds, it is important that they remain in balance with each other. When balance is lost, the worlds begin to intersect and merge together, creating distortions and causing the worlds to fall into darkness and decay,[3][6] as well as causing the flow of time between the worlds to desynchronize.[7] A total loss of balance could reduce all worlds into a world of darkness.[3] The destruction of the Quantized World would cause all of the worlds it encompasses, including the Digital World, to cease to exist; while the Real World is not one of those worlds and would continue to exist, it would lose all of its electronic and digital infrastructure as a consequence.[5]
In order to maintain its own balance, the Digital World relies on a number of forces. The god-like entity Homeostasis oversees the Digital World and aims to maintain its balance, with the assistance of agents like Gennai.[8][9] The Four Holy Beasts act as guardians whose power is intended to keep the Digital World in balance.[10][6] The existence of the Holy Stones also maintain the balance.[3] Any weakening of these forces causes the power of darkness within the Digital World to grow.[11]
As a last resort, Homeostasis is able to initiate a Reboot that resets, and effectively turns back time within, the Digital World in order to eliminate threats to the Quantized World as a whole.[5]
Access[edit]
Digital Gates are the main method of travel between the Real and Digital Worlds. Gate points occur naturally in certain places in the Real World, such as Hikarigaoka[12][13] and the Mikami Canyon summer camp site.[14][4] However, humans tend to have limited control over the opening and closing of these gates. As an alternative, D-3s can be used to open Digital Gates on any computer.[15]
Within the Digital World itself, the basement of Vamdemon Castle houses an ancient gate that connects the Digital World to other worlds, including the Real World.[16] It is opened by inserting nine cards into a slate in front of the gate, and the combination of cards determines the destination world.[1] Following the defeat of Apocalymon in 1999, a temporary gate to the Real World also manifested as a solar eclipse in the Digital World's sun.[7]
Television monitors found in the eastern area of the Digital World can be used with D-3s to open Digital Gates to return to the Real World or, without D-3s, as a way to communicate messages to the Real World.[17]
It is possible for serious distortions to enable Digimon to travel from the Digital World to the Real World.[3] Some extremely powerful Digimon, such as Demon, are capable of opening gates between the worlds by themselves.[13]
It is also possible for all forms of gate to seal entirely and prevent travel from the Real World to the Digital World for long periods of time.[18]

Server Continent is a major continental landmass in the Digital World.
Spiral Mountain[edit]

For a brief period in August 1999, the Dark Masters reconfigured the entire Digital World into Spiral Mountain.[21]
As Spiral Mountain, the Digital World was divided into four distinct sections, each ruled by one of the Dark Masters. Upon the defeat of each Dark Master, their section of Spiral Mountain collapsed and began to regenerate into its original state.[22]

Never-Land[edit]

Never-Land is a unique space in the Digital World that was used by Menoa Bellucci in her 2010 plan to grant abducted Chosen Children eternal childhoods. It is located in the open seas to the east of Server Continent, northwest of File Island.
