| Takeru and Patamon are playing with the baby digimon at Primary Village when they suddenly start whining. Takeru asks what’s wrong, and Patamon turns to see Leomon sliding down the cliff behind them, sword drawn. Patamon uses Air Shot and then leads Takeru away to hide in the trees. Leomon follows them, walking to where they’re hiding. Suddenly Orgemon’s voice calls out, and Takeru and Patamon see him holding a Poyomon, demanding that they come out or else he will hurt the baby. Takeru looks at Patamon, and the Digimon thinks that if they can get the black gear out of Leomon, he will fight for them. He worries that he won’t be strong enough to do it, and that he can’t protect Takeru alone.
Leomon arrives, slicing the tree trunk they were hiding behind down. He raises his sword, and as he’s about to strike, Garurumon’s voice rips through the air, announcing his Fox Fire attack. The blue flames force Leomon to jump out of the way. Garurumon runs up and Yamato drops off his back. Garurumon continues to fight Leomon. Ogremon is surprised, and Taichi quickly reaches in, taking the Poyomon he was threatening back. Greymon then attacks him with Mega Flame. Ogremon complains that his hair is singed, then begins to engage Greymon.
Several more black gears fly up, hitting Leomon as he fights. He growls, then grows much bigger, his color fading to a dark stained grey. He uses Juuoken on Garurumon, taking him out of commission, then hits Greymon too. Leomon starts to walk towards Takeru with the intention of killing him. Patamon fires several ineffective Air Shot attacks. Leomon grabs him in one fist.
Suddenly Togemon falls from the sky, landing hard on Leomon and knocking him over. Everyone is understandably surprised, and Kabuterimon flies down carrying Koshiro and Mimi. Koshiro tells Taichi to use the power of the Digivice. Taichi remembers when the darkness was pushed out of Leomon before, and holds up his Digivice. Yamato joins him and their light starts driving away the many black gears inside of Leomon. Orgemon tries to attack, but Kabiterimon uses his Mega Blaster. Seeing that he’s outnumbered, Orgemon flees. Leomon shrinks down to his normal size.
Leomon tells the group about the legend of the Chosen Children, saying that darkness was to overtake the island before they arrived, and that they have the ability to make Digimon evolve. Koshiro theorizes that if they defeat the evil, they will no longer be needed and will be able to go home. Everyone seems enthusiastic, but Yamato reminds them that they need to beat Devimon. Taichi says that they can do it, and everyone agrees with varying degrees of enthusiasm, knowing they need to if they want to go home. Leomon says he’ll help too.
Leomon paddles the group towards Infinity Mountain, and when they reach it, they begin climbing. Devimon knows the fight is coming, and starts gathering black gears to grow stronger. Jo and Sora are moving towards Infinity Mountain, and see the gears. They go as fast as they can. As the rest of the kids are walking, the top of the mountain cracks. Devimon emerges, and he is much, much bigger. Leomon says it’s not an illusion, and everyone is afraid. Devimon flies down and lands on some trees. As they’re about to evolve, Devimon turns, and the wind pushes everyone backwards. He extends his hand, and a beam of darkness saps everyone’s strength. As they’re about to lose, Jo and Sora show up. Ikkakumon uses Harpoon Vulcan and Birdramon attacks with Meteor Wing to buy them time. Sora shouts for everyone to evolve, and they do except for Patamon. Everyone attacks, but is beaten very quickly without harming Devimon. Leomon jumps at his back, but Orgemon pops out, having become part of Devimon, and drives him off.
Devimon reaches towards the cliff, saying that if Takeru is gone, he will have nothing to fear. All the Digimon muster a last attack to protect him, but Devimon sends out a wave of darkness that knocks out the Digimon and humans. Now unimpaired, Devimon reaches toward Takeru. Patamon uses Air Shot, but that doesn’t work, and Patamon is grabbed instead. Once in Devimon’s fist, Patamon evolves into Angemon. Everyone is shocked, and Angemon draws power from all the Digivices, and the other Digimon shrink to the child level. Devimon warns him that if he does this, he won’t end up well either. Angemon says this is the only way. He quietly apologizes to Takeru, then uses a charged Heaven's Knuckle. The power using him as a conduit was too much, and both Devimon and Angemon start fading, fragmenting into darkness and light respectively. Devimon tells Angemon that this was foolish, and across the sea there are more powerful dark forces. Angemon looks at Takeru and says that if he wishes for it, they will meet again.
Takeru sobs, and as Angemon dies, several feathers float down and turn into a striped egg. The other Digimon explains that if everything goes correctly, Takeru will be able to see Angemon again. Takeru hugs the egg and promises to take care of it. The children ponder Devimon’s last words, about the other evil spreading across the sea. As they’re talking, the ground fractures and a holographic image pops up of an old man.
