The Chosen Children reach Vamdemon Castle in Episode 31, "Vamdemon, the Castle of Darkness". They were unable to find a way in, however, until Agumon offered to go on his own as he could sneak in as a Digimon, and Palmon joined him. Meanwhile, Pico Devimon complained about Nanimon's students (a group of Numemon and Vegimon, as well as a Scumon and a Tyumon), though the latter made it clear that he could make them into proper soldiers, and Pico Devimon left the matter in his hands. Agumon and Palmon then arrived and asked him if they could join them, and Nanimon accepted them as they looked stronger than the Digimon it was training. Nanimon made the Partner Digimon join his training regiment, which left them with no chance to sneak the Chosen Children in. Scumon, who overheard them, then told them that he had been in an unit with Nanimon in the past, and that he was useless in combat back then because he kept getting drunk. Agumon saw this as their chance to get rid of Nanimon, though Palmon was confused about it. In another chamber, Pico Devimon reported to Vamdemon that they had gathered a multitude of soldiers. Vamdemon asked him if they were useful and Pico Devimon was incapable of properly answering him. Tailmon then entered the room, laughing and insulting the soldiers. This annoyed Pico Devimon, but before the situation could escalate, Vamdemon stopped them and asked Tailmon if she had found useful soldiers, which Tailmon did.
Outside the castle, the Chosen Children were getting impatient, but Agumon and Palmon finally showed themselves from a window above them, and Palmon used her Poison Ivy to get them in. Afterwards, Ishida Yamato worried about traps, though they nonetheless decided to keep going. The fear for traps ended up turning out to be correct, with the castle having poisoned floors and teleporters. Going through one of them, the Chosen Children found themselves in an area where space was distorted and Yamato wondered if it was because Vamdemon's power was stronger there.
As the Chosen Children continued through the castle, Vamdemon proclaimed to his servants (which included Tailmon, Pico Devimon and Nanimon) that it was time to depart to kill the eighth Chosen Child. With the chant "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius!", Vamdemon opened a gigantic gate through which they attempted to leave. However, before they could, the Chosen Children arrived. Vamdemon did not care, however, as they were too late. He refused to stay and ordered Pico Devimon to take care of the Chosen Children, and he then passed the order to Nanimon, who fought the Chosen Children alongside a Scumon, a Tyumon and a Vegimon, though they were all easily defeated, and afterwards he surrendered. He excused himself in saying that retreating is winning in its own way, then ran away alongside his students, leaving Pico Devimon to face the Chosen Children and their Adult-level Partners alone. Takaishi Takeru wanted them to get rid of Pico Devimon fast, and Pico Devimon decided to fight back to no avail. Realizing the gate was closing, Takenouchi Sora and Yagami Taichi told the rest to hurry up, but Tailmon then took to the battlefield herself. Kido Jo underestimated her due to her small size. He was quickly proven wrong, as Tailmon easily beat the Partner Digimon with her Neko Kick and Neko Punch attacks. The Chosen Children nonetheless attempted to get to the gate, but Tailmon sent two Devidramon after them. After defeating them, the Chosen Children attempted to go into the gate again, but then Tailmon sent four more Devidramon after them, buying Tailmon enough time to leave through the gate and for it to close. Realizing they couldn't keep up with the enemy's numbers, the Chosen Children ran away.
Outside the castle, the Chosen Children talked to Gennai, who considered the situation a shame. This angered them, as the situation was much worse than that, with the eighth Chosen Child and Japan in danger. Taichi asked Gennai if there was another way to open the gate, which Gennai confirmed but couldn't explain, instead asking them to go to his house, which they could find by following a light.
After obtaining the cards needed to open the gate once again, the Chosen Children return to Vamdemon Castle in Episode 33, "The Chase! Hurry to Japan". Once they reached the gate, Agumon asked Taichi to lay down the cards, which Jo and Yamato agreed with, since he was the leader. Taichi was confused at being considered their leader, but Yamato pointed out that the group broke apart once he disappeared and was brought back together thanks to him. Tachikawa Mimi then acted as her old selfish self, crying to Taichi to return her to her world, though then pointed out she would not act that way now, which led Sora to point out that they had to change themselves to change anything else. Takeru felt safe as they would still be together no matter what world they found themselves in and Izumi Koshiro also believed in Taichi. With the trust of his teammates, Taichi decided to take the responsibility for the cards, and realized that there was an engraved grid on the pedestal where the cards were meant to go. Koshiro thought they were hints on how to place the cards and translated the Digimoji with his computer.
"From the Virus-types, present a Child form. From the Data-types, present an Adult form. From the Vaccine-types, present a Perfect form."
These were the Gazimon, Drimogemon and Andromon cards. However, the last hint took more time to translate, which gave Dokugumon the chance to ambush the Chosen Children, as he had no intention of allowing the Chosen Children to interfere with Vamdemon's plans. While they could defeat Dokugumon, another issue arised soon after: the castle began to fall apart. Koshiro then finished translating the last hint.
"From the Vaccine-types, present a Child form."
Unlike the previous hints, there were two cards that fit the criteria: Agumon and Gomamon. Taichi ultimately decided to use the Gomamon card, which was the right call as the gate properly led the Chosen Children back to the very same campgrounds they had departed to the Digital World from. They could not celebrate this, however, as they needed to go to Hikarigaoka to protect the eighth Child from Vamdemon.
