Yamato and Gabumon climb out of the swan pedal boat and look around, wondering if the wind blew them off course. They see a group of Digimon walking, and decide to follow them to see where they’re going. They arrive at a restaurant owned by Vegimon. As they walk up, Vegimon throws Gomamon out of the door, telling him to find more customers. Gomamon is happy to see Yamato and Gabumon, and takes him to Jo, who is in the kitchen. Yamato tells him that the whole group split up. Jo says that after he and Gomamon left, they met Pico Devimon, who told them there was a large group of humans a little farther along. Jo and Gomamon, not knowing any better, followed him, but lost sight of him. After walking for a while, they were lost, and found the restaurant as they were getting hungry. They ate a large meal, but when they try to pay, they find out that Vegimon only accepts American dollars, which Jo does not have. Now Vegimon is making him work to pay off the meal.
As he finishes the story, Vegimon bursts in the door, demanding food for the customers. He takes a sip from a bowl of Jo’s soup, then throws it against the floor, saying it’s horrible and he’s adding more to Jo’s expenses. Yamato asks how long he needs to be there, and Jo says it started out as three days, but every time he messes up, the time is extended. He now needs to work for about two weeks. Digitamamon walks in the back door and asks what is going on. Yamato asks him to let Jo leave, and Digitamamon says that he can’t, but if Yamato helps work to pay off the debt, they will be able to leave sooner. He then tells Yamato to leave if he won’t help, and walks away.
Yamato tells Jo that Takeru is waiting for him, and he will go get him to bring him to the restaurant before helping Jo work. Jo is very grateful. In the top room of the restaurant, Digitamamon finds Pico Devimon waiting with a stack of money. Pico Devimon says he has a small thing for Digitamamon to do. As Yamato and Gabumon are walking to the boat, Digitamamon tells Yamato he can’t leave. Yamato says he’s coming back, but Digitamamon is not satisfied by this. He implies that if Yamato leaves now, something bad might happen to Jo.
Yamato goes back to work in the kitchen. Jo is confused by this, and asks why he isn’t going back for Takeru. He encourages Yamato to go, and after a moment of this, Yamato sharply yells that it’s fine, he’s not going. Jo is taken aback, and quietly asks if he said something wrong. Yamato winces, thinking that Jo said all of that in consideration of him. He apologizes for yelling, and says that if they work together quickly, they’ll be out of there in no time.
Over the next while, Jo makes several mistakes in the restaurant, dropping plates and getting orders wrong. More time is added to his tab, and Yamato is frustrated. Jo guiltily apologizes, promising not to make any more mistakes. After he says this, he starts to think about how much trouble he’s causing for Yamato, and ends up fumbling the tray he’s holding, dropping it on the ground. Yamato stiffly tells him it’s fine, and turns away. He agonizes over how long he will have to stay here, and that he promised Takeru he’d come back.
Yamato asks Jo to get some potatoes, and outside the window, Pico Devimon hears. He destabilizes the makeshift table that the potatoes are sitting on by pulling out a cinder block. He flies away, going to a safe distance to watch. As his back is turned, Sora quietly runs over, then slides the cinder block back in, undoing what Pico Devimon did. As he settles on a branch to watch, he sees Jo get a box of potatoes without incident.
Later that night, Yamato is sitting on the shore, playing his harmonica. Pico Devimon comes up, saying that the music is lovely. He says Yamato looks burdened, and Yamato is surprised he can tell. Pico Devimon says that he’s helping a friend at a cost to himself, but his friend doesn’t feel the same. Yamato asks what he means, and Pico Devimon says Jo is making mistakes on purpose, so that he won’t be left behind. Yamato says that Jo wouldn’t do that. Pico Devimon sighs and says Yamato is a good guy, before flying off.
The next day, Yamato desperately asks Digitamamon to let him go to get his little brother, and the Digimon refuses. Jo is watching, and Pico Devimon sneaks up behind him, hitting him and making him knock over a stack of plates. They shatter, and Digitamamon says they both have to stay another week. Yamato crouches, despair cracking his voice, asking why this keeps happening. Jo insists that something bumped his legs, and Yamato shouts at him to stop making excuses, then walks out the back door.
Taichi, Takeru and their Digimon are on the shore, and Taichi’s Digivice starts beeping. He says someone must be nearby, and they follow it to the restaurant. When they open the doors, they see Gabumon and Gomamon cleaning, looking exhausted. Taichi asks where their partners are, and is pointed towards the kitchen. Jo is happy to see them, and Takeru runs out the door to find Yamato. Taichi asks Jo what is wrong. Yamato is lying on the ground, and Takeru runs up and hugs him. He is surprised, and asks how his brother got here. Takeru says he came with Taichi, and Yamato turns to see him in the doorway of the restaurant. He thanks Taichi for taking care of Takeru, and apologies to the little boy for not keeping his promise. Taichi says that it doesn’t look like anyone is around, so they should leave now. Yamato says he doesn’t want to go anywhere with Jo, and Taichi asks why he said that; they’re all friends. Yamato scoffs, saying Taichi keeps dragging everyone around at his own convenience, so he can go alone. Taichi is shocked, and Takeru asks Yamato why he’s doing this. Yamato interrupts him, snapping at him to stay quiet.
Digitamamon walks around the corner, asking if anyone was thinking about leaving. Pico Devimon says that would cause a lot of trouble for them, and Taichi and Takeru react angrily at the sight of him. They say he’s an evil Digimon who tried to trick them, and Agumon and Patamon use their Baby Flame and Air Shot attacks. Pico Devimon runs away, and they chase after him with Taichi. Digitamamon attacks the other children, and Gabumon evolves to Garurumon. Vegimon grabs Takeru to use as a hostage, and Gomamon evolves as well. Jo climbs onto the roof, then jumps onto Vegimon, freeing Takeru, but getting himself caught in the process. Vegimon begins to squeeze him tightly, and Jo tells the others to keep fighting. Yamato remembers all the rude things he said to Jo, and his Crest starts to glow.
Digitamamon uses his Nightmare Syndrome, leaving Garurumon and Ikkakumon on the ground. Yamato says that they can still win, because they have friends, and he can’t forget the feeling of believing in them. Garurumon gasps, then evolves into Were Garurumon. With Yamato’s encouragement he uses his Kaiser Nail to block Nightmare Syndrome. Vegimon and Pico Devimon are stunned by his win, and Vegimon releases Jo before fleeing. Taichi, Gomamon, and Tsunomon say that Jo was pretty cool, making him blush slightly. Yamato awkwardly steps forward and thanks Jo, then says he’s sorry. Jo laughs and says it’s ok.
Pico Devimon reports to Vamdemon again, and says that the light from the Crest of Friendship has allowed Garurumon to evolve. Vamdemon is angry and attacks Pico Devimon with his bats.
As the children are walking, their Digivices starts to blink. Taichi says his is pointing one way, and Yamato’s is going another. They decide to split up, and Yamato goes with Takeru, leaving Taichi and Jo as the other group. They agree to meet up at the foot of a mountain, and part ways.
