Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Before the game's events, Kagefumi's childhood friend, Kayo, introduced him to Appmon battles to get him to leave his house, which got him hooked to the point of becoming the B-Rank Master, yet that same reason made him even more withdrawn too after suffering relentless bullying. At some point before Kazuki/Itsuki learned of him, he was also defeated by Naoto, which intensified the bullying
During the game, Kazuki/Itsuki was meant to face Kagefumi as the B-Rank Master, but MCmon told them that it'd be impossible to bring him to the Cyber Arena (with remote battles being currently offline), letting Kayo explain why. Kayo explained that he was a severe recluse and not even she could get him out of his house despite repeated attempts. Indeed, he had made sure no one could even reach his house, by having all of his friend Kabemon block various paths in Yongendōri including the only road that led to his house, as well as having his Buddy Appmon, Craftmon, barricate the entrance from the inside. To get inside, Kazuki/Itsuki would have to get to Craftmon and stop it, which was possible thanks to Kayo's Copipemon connecting AR Dungeons to Kagefumi's house's system.
Inside the AR Dungeons, Kazuki/Itsuki found several logs of the bullying Kagefumi suffered. While Kazuki/Itsuki first thought they were insults directed at them, they realized they were about Kagefumi when an insult specified it was against the B-Rank Master. The bullying was so intense that Kazuki/Itsuki realized why Kayo couldn't continue and Logimon couldn't understand how people could write such terrible things.
After defeating Craftmon, who desperately wanted to protect Kagefumi from anyone in the outside world, Kazuki/Itsuki entered Kagefumi's house, where they found him in a darkened lobby. Kagefumi saw their B-Rank Master Voucher and instantly conceded, justifying it because everyone saw him as a weak Rank Master anyways so everyone would believe Kazuki/Itsuki if they said they destroyed him. Kazuki/Itsuki rejected his logic and the concession however, as they wanted a proper Ranker battle and Logimon wanted to connect with the real, serious Kagefumi, who believed they just wanted to laugh at him after losing despite giving it his all. Kagefumi then called three Craftmon to drive Kazuki/Itsuki and Logimon off, all with the same belief that everyone in the outside world was Kagefumi's enemy. However, Kazuki/Itsuki screamed that they would never laugh at someone giving it their all as they also gave their all and loved Appmon and battling, and knew Kagefumi felt the same. They then insulted those that laughed at the ones who put in effort as being incapable of doing it themselves and questioned Kagefumi for quitting Appmon battles for being laughed at. Kagefumi pointed out he was in his situation because he lost an Appmon battle and rejected Kazuki/Itsuki understanding him as they had just met. However, before he could explain what Appmon meant for him, Kazuki/Itsuki answered for them: they loved Appmon, and it was obvious just looking at the Craftmon who desperately tried to protect him, proof of how strong their bond was. Kagefumi's pain turned the Craftmon more aggressive, telling Kazuki/Itsuki not to bully Kagefumi and blaming themselves for Kagefumi crying after they lost, promising never to do so again. However, Kagefumi stopped them there, taking full responsibility for their defeat, as well as accepting he had also lost to Kazuki/Itsuki. He then stated he wanted to try again with Craftmon (of which two left), even if it was hard, and asked Kazuki/Itsuki to be their opponent in their comeback match. To do so, Kazuki/Itsuki asked him to come to the Cyber Arena as they couldn't do remote battles due to a network outage. However, Kagefumi didn't have the courage to go outside. Kazuki/Itsuki then decided to find a way to reactivate remote battles and Logimon said he'd connect them, knowing they had connected lots of bonds so far and would keep doing so in the future. Kagefumi also offered to call MCmon.
When they called MCmon, however, his signal was more scrambled than ever and impossible to boost but Logimon refused to give up and attempted to connect them, which seemingly fixed the issue but only for a moment. The second Craftmon then rejoined them and offered to help Logimon. Kazuki/Itsuki then asked why there were so many Craftmon around and Kagefumi explained he had Kayo's Copipemon make copies of Craftmon a while ago to remodel his house. Logimon then asked Kazuki/Itsuki to use their Appli Drive to Applink Logimon with the copy Craftmon. The Applink ended up forming an AppGattai instead, however, turning them into Bootmon. Kazuki/Itsuki apologised for doing that to Kagefumi's Buddy Appmon, but Kagefumi was fine with it since that was just a copy and Craftmon was glad one of them could help. Now together, Bootmon boosted Craftmon's ability to connect with a full-power boot, which fully fixed the Remote Cyber Arena. Kagefumi was ready to fight even if it meant being laughed at so long as he had Craftmon with him, a sentiment Craftmon shared and MCmon also agreed with, giving his full acknowledgement to Kagefumi as the B-Rank Master.
At the start of the battle, Kagefumi tells Kazuki/Itsuki they may regret wanting to see him at full power. He proudly stated he was the Buddy of the design app's Craftmon and the B-Rank Master, and that he'd craft his win. Kagefumi opens the battle with Craftmon + Craftmon. He follows that with Damedamon + Craftmon.
Craftmon thought he had made Kagefumi sad again by being defeated but Kagefumi realized he truly loved Appmon battles and wanted to keep going alongside Craftmon. Craftmon broke down in tears at seeing Kagefumi so happy. Kazuki/Itsuki and Bootmon believed both of them were strong, which made Craftmon even happier. Kagefumi promised he'd try going outside, even if it took more time, because he wanted to try even harder, together with Craftmon. Kazuki/Itsuki believed that'd make Kayo happy too. He then warned Kazuki/Itsuki about the A-Rank Master's strength.
After Kazuki/Itsuki reached S-Rank, a terrified Kagefumi joined the other Appli Drivers as they discussed their latest crisis, though the mere fact that he had left his house distracted Kazuki/Itsuki and made them really happy for him. Kagefumi explained that, after their battle, he had been thinking of what he wanted to do and who he wanted to be, and his answer was that he wanted to be an Appli Driver, so he couldn't hide in his room during such a serious crisis. Kagefumi didn't understand what said crisis was though, but the abnormalities had reached Yongendori. Of course, he also didn't know what a Chaos AR-Field was, so Kazuki/Itsuki quoted Ouji's explanation verbatim. Kagefumi then explained that, while the AR-Field hadn't visibly changed like in Hifumigaoka, parts of it had nonetheless changed and rampaging Appmon appeared, and the Craftmon patrol reported the same, so it was probably starting to turn into a Chaos AR-Field. Kazuki/Itsuki remembered Jammingmon said the previous Chaos AR-Field was caused by a Chaos Gate and imagined the same was true here. Makoto knew there had to be Chaos Gates in Hifumigaoka and Yongendori but there may be more elsewhere too. Yukari wished Ouji and Kayo were there to help, and Mio thought the same of Naoto, who they couldn't even contact due to Appli Talk being down. Makoto had Kazuki/Itsuki look in Hifumigaoka and Yongendori while the rest split up and searched for other Chaos Gates. Everyone enthusiastically agreed, except Kagefumi who couldn't keep up with their energy. Yukari and Mio left first. Makoto said he'd go to Mihamakou to talk to Ryouji and the Mihama Gang and left too. Kazuki/Itsuki then asked Kagefumi if he was fine being outdoors but he knew he couldn't stay home during such a crisis as the B-Rank Master. He thanked Kazuki/Itsuki for making him an Appli Driver again and left.
Mio and Kagefumi reached the Yongendori Chaos Gate before Kazuki/Itsuki did. During the time before they joined them, Kagefumi found out there was a programmatic block that stopped them from entering the Chaos Gate's AR Dungeon. However, Mio and Kagefumi were ready to try something else, namely, leaving it to Craftmon, who reverse-engineered the block, which he saw as nowhere near enough to repay Kazuki/Itsuki for saving Kagefumi. However, before they could go in, a red symbol Appmon spawned from the Chaos Gate and attacked Mio, though it was stopped by the newly-arrived Naoto and Shutmon. Afterwards, Naoto was greatly angered with Kazuki/Itsuki for, in his eyes, putting Mio in serious danger, so she had to point out she wanted to help. This calmed him down somewhat, though he still stated he couldn't leave protecting Mio to Kazuki/Itsuki so he'd take care of her while they deactivated the Chaos Gate. Naoto allowed Kagefumi to go too but he decided to stay behind as he was worried about Mio with Naoto alone protecting her. Naoto was pleasantly surprised at Kagefumi speaking his mind and told him to do as he wished. Regardless, Kagefumi felt uneasy being with Naoto, who made his life hell, but accepted it as part of life and better than being a shut-in. After Kazuki/Itsuki deactivated it, Kagefumi praised them while Mio and Naoto were glad it was stopped. Kazuki/Itsuki was left thinking about the three password pieces they had found in the Chaos Gates: "0UJ", but rejected telling Mio about it.
After Rebootmon explained his mad plan in the Teito Security laptop AR Field, Mio called, screaming that she knew Naoto since far before Rebootmon did and wouldn't let him make a world for only them. Alongside her were the Rank Masters Yukari, Makoto and Kagefumi. Ouji also proclaimed they would protect the world, even against a God Appmon. Rebootmon explained that, as the fusion of Shutmon and Bootmon, he possessed both the ability to cut Appmon off and steal their power. With that, he took everyone's Appmon, and cut the connection with Mio and the rest. He then once again beckoned Naoto to go with him to a world without Kazuki/Itsuki where they wouldn't need to rely on anyone. Naoto agreed but with one condition: return all of Kazuki/Itsuki's Appmon, as if he had to not rely on Kazuki/Itsuki, then Rebootmon couldn't rely on their Appmon either. Rebootmon agreed and released them, including Bootmon, which to Ouji's surprise didn't make him revert, thanks to his ability to reboot and restore which instantly regenerated Bootmon's part, making him unneeded. Naoto told Kazuki/Itsuki this was his problem to solve then left with Rebootmon to go into the system.
With the two gone, Kazuki/Itsuki, Ouji and Kayo returned to the Real World where Mio and the Rank Masters were. Ouji's laptop was replaced with the proper Chaos Gate, and Ouji knew that's where Naoto and Rebootmon were but only Kazuki/Itsuki could follow them, as no one else had Appmon anymore. There, Kagefumi lamented how he couldn't protect Craftmon.
As Kazuki/Itsuki prepared to enter the AR Dungeon, Ouji asked them if they were going to save Naoto. Kayo reminded them that they had to save the world, but they should save their precious friend too. Makoto accepted it was all up to them again. Yukari was certain they would succeed. Kagefumi knew that their side that helped others even when told not to was what saved him and what would save Naoto. Mio wondered if it was her fault that Naoto had changed and begged Kazuki/Itsuki to save him, promising not to be selfish anymore. Bootmon had been saved by Naoto and wanted to return the favour. With all of those feelings riding on their back, Kazuki/Itsuki and Bootmon entered the AR Dungeon.
