Digimon Beatbreak[edit]

Kyo's parents died during the Kano Island Incident[18]. Afterwards, he was sent to the Sakura Orphanage ran by Dr. Tenma Tasuku, where he befriended his grandson Tenma Asuka despite his cold personality, and exchanged their contact details through their Sapotamas. However, Dr. Tasuku warned them that the devices are dangerous. One day, when Kyo was waiting for Asuka, he found out that he was being bullied badly by the other children at the orphanage; Kyo rushed there to save them but was outnumbered. In a fit of strong emotions, Kyo's Sapotama gave birth to Cougarmon and drove away the bullies. As a result of owning a Digimon, he was forced by the Ministry of Civil Protection to become a Cleaner in exchange for Cougarmon not being deleted.[19]

As a Cleaner, Kyo used to be extremely ruthless, deleting every Digimon he came across[18] and in at least one instance, killed the Digimon's owner himself too. He quickly evolved his Cougarmon into a Murasamemon and was eventually recruited by the World Union as its Star of "Gold" at the mere age of 11. In a conversation between Glowing Dawn and Klay Arslan, he describes his e-Pulse as "always having a wrathful aura within," indicating that he was also quick to anger[20]. During his service in the Five Stars, he also befriended a young Kutsuna Kaito, who maintained a friendly rivalry with him[21]. At his 5th year of service, Kuroshio Souji joined, which he was quick to establish a grudge with over his tendency to commit violence appalled the rest of his colleagues.

Things changed for Kyo 6 years ago where on a mission, he was heavily injured by a slain Archnemon and escaped, ending up in a riverbed next to a small Digimon shelter known as Nirinso at Mount Aihoshi. There, he was nursed back to health by its caretaker Minoru and Karina, a young girl he adopted. Initially he did not care about them, but he gradually opened his heart up and built a familial bond with them. The three spent time with each other for around a year where Minoru taught Kyo his signature cooking. Eventually, Karina offered him to stay in her place as much as he wants to, which he accepts.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck when the World Union noticed that Kyo went missing for a year and dispatched Souji to find him. He managed to locate the place where he was hiding at and slaughtered all of its inhabitants with a Piranimon. Kyo rushed in hearing the commotion, only to see the dying bodies of Luxmon and Karina on a riverbed, who warns him of an invader and asks him to run before succumbing to their injuries and dying. Enraged and grief-ridden, Kyo goes near a cliff to confront Souji, deleting his Piranimon out of rage and seemingly killed him by throwing him off the cliff. In actuality, Souji survived and was disgraced and arrested following another murder. Despondent and grief-ridden, Kyo tearfully vows that he will not delete another Digimon again.[20]

Afterwards, Kyo wandered despondently for a while and made his way back to the old Sakura Orphanage site, where he ran into Asuka again. Asuka informs him that his grandfather and parents were arrested for protesting against Chairman Wong's forceful commercialization of e-Pulse and introduces him to his new Digimon partner, Helios Boamon. He was then involved in an e-Pulse draining incident where Helios Boamon accidentally evolved into Albatusmon and went on a rampage draining the e-Pulse of everyone in the vicinity, of which Kaito was also there to intervene. They fought Albatusmon and devolved it back to his perfect form, but when Kaito is prepared to delete Helios Boamon, Kyo tearfully asks him to stop and officially announces his resignation from the Five Stars. Out of anger and disappointment, Kaito orders Flaremon to delete it anyways, but Kyo uses his body to defend it from Flaremon's attacks, leaving a scar on his chest, and engages in a final losing duel against him. A disappointed Kaito tells him that he is no longer worth burning and leaves with his Star of Gold tag.[22] The vacancy he left behind was filled in by Kanada Genjo.

In the following years, a now mostly-humbled and changed Kyo created his own Nirinso Shelter with help from Garando as a tribute to his lost old "family" and aims to create a future where Digimon and humanity could co-exist. Therefore, he starts founding his new "family" known as Glowing Dawn, a Cleaner group that is unique that it does not delete Digimon and instead sends any Digimon they defeat to Nirinso Shelter. Any Digimon defeated by Glowing Dawn were reported as dead so they could still get full bounty, but the Digimon were actually sent to the shelter and taken care of. He recruited Sakuya Reina and Kuonji Makoto prior to the beginning of the series. He also recruited Asuka's younger brother Tenma Tomoro when the former was Cold Hearted by a Hyemon and got his Sapotama extracted and held on ransom by Gokuwmon, offering to help him assist in recovering Asuka.[23] When Tomoro defeats the other Hyemon that evolved into a Fangmon, he tries to kill the Punimon that it devolved into out of rage, but Kyo and his Murasamemon stop him, reprimanding him that Glowing Dawn has only one rule, and it is it never deletes Digimon[24].

For most of the show, Kyo is a kindly man who treats his crew as if they were family and not mere crew members. On top of being a veritable combatant on his own, he is also a skilled cook capable of preparing a wide variety of dishes. On the other hand, he has no mercy for people who harm his crew members, and has punched Yamada Sunny as payback for trying to sell Makoto's Chiropmon as merchandise[25].

After the GIFT cult was disbanded, its former lieutenant Kishiwada Kanchi freed Souji out of prison to further reinforce the White Core's powers on Kyo's 23rd birthday[26]. Souji then goes to find Kyo for a rematch. Despite Murasamemon initially had the upper hand, Souji successfully overwhelmed him with his ability to harness the White Core and reigniting his buried hatred and anger. The two agreed to rematch on the old Nirinso site at Mount Aihoshi, something that the ex-Star of Water intended to leverage to force his rival to go against his own morals and principles. A hardened Kyo then dons his old Star of Gold uniform and puts his yellow scrunchie on Minoru and Karina's grave and shows up in the Golden Dawn base to cut ties with the rest of the group, defeating all of their Digimon and reducing them to their Baby I forms (secretly, he did so to prevent them from being mistaken for accomplices for supposedly responsible for Rose Woodville being Cold Hearted)[18]. Worried, the remaining Glowing Dawn members go to ask Klay for intel, and were able to get from him on Kyo and Souji's whereabouts[20]. They arrive there before Kyo did, only to end up all overwhelmed and defeated. Kyo then followed suit and confronted Souji with obvious killing intent, defeating both Splashmon Darkness Mode and Marin Devimon. Souji continues goading Kyo into breaking his vows and moral code and sics Lilamon on him, which he almost fell for and injected Murasamemon with his dark e-Pulse, forcing it to go berserk try killing Lilamon only to be stopped short by Monarch Lizamon. The rest of his group manages to convince Kyo to regain his epihany, but as soon as he does so, Souji continues to goad him by taking over all three of the party's perfect-levels with the White Core, but this fails completely as their Owners manage to snap their Digimon back to their senses, and their e-Pulse trails knock him into the water.

After Souji was seemingly defeated, the party gives their sincere thanks to Kyo for kindling their bond and building a future for Digimon and humans, which he tearfully accepts. But then Souji reemerges from the water for another round, this time intent on fighting the entire group for real. He evolves his Pitchmon into Marin Devimon again and enlarges it to an absolutely gigantic size. Vowing to live and protect what he has now and move foward in spite of losing his loved ones in the past, Kyo has Murasamemon evolve into his Ultimate form; Habakirimon, and easily defeats the giant Marin Devimon. Afterwards, a partially Cold Hearted Souji tries to commit suicide by dropping off from the cliff. Kyo pulls him by the collar, and as a last-ditch attempt, he desperately goads Kyo to kill him. Instead, he refuses and leaves Souji alone in a half-alive state.[27]
