Kano Island Incident
The Kano Island Incident (神生島消失事件 Kanōjima Shōshitsu Jiken, lit. "Kano Island Disappearance Incident") was a catastrophic event that occurred on Kano Island on October 5, 2029, twenty-one years before the main events of Digimon Beatbreak. The incident resulted in the disappearance of most of the island, caused extensive subsidence and flooding throughout Japan's coastal regions, and left approximately 1.3 million people dead or missing.
Although officially attributed to an unprecedented earthquake and the resulting crustal deformation, the disaster was actually caused by Digimon that emerged during experiments involving e-Pulse. The truth was subsequently concealed by Chairman Wong.
Background[edit]
Before the incident, Chairman Wong operated a research facility on Kano Island where experiments involving e-Pulse were conducted. Tenma Tasuku, who would later develop the Sapotama, participated in the research.
The island also received refugees from other countries, including the displaced royal family of the former Alvida Kingdom. Among them was a young Klay Arslan, whose homeland had collapsed following political conflict over its rare-earth resources.
The incident[edit]
Experiments conducted at the facility caused numerous Digimon to emerge from the e-Pulse of the people present. The Digimon attacked the facility's researchers and began fighting one another for e-Pulse. Klay's own e-Pulse gave birth to Sunarizamon, which protected him by deleting several of the other Digimon.
As the Digimon continued taking e-Pulse from one another, an enormous and exceptionally powerful Digimon was eventually created. Wong, Tasuku, and Klay witnessed its appearance, with Wong becoming fascinated by what he described as its godlike power.
The enormous Digimon ultimately disintegrated, releasing a vast amount of energy. The resulting destruction caused most of Kano Island to disappear and produced widespread land subsidence and flooding in the surrounding coastal regions. Approximately 1.3 million people were killed or reported missing, and the geography of Japan was permanently altered.
Aftermath[edit]
Wong concealed the involvement of e-Pulse and Digimon in the disaster. The public was instead informed that an unprecedented earthquake had caused crustal deformation and widespread land subsidence.
After witnessing the enormous Digimon's power, Wong became determined to reproduce and control it. He subsequently promoted the commercial use of e-Pulse and the widespread adoption of the Sapotama, developments that would eventually contribute to the emergence of further Digimon and the implementation of the Shangri-La Project.
Appalled by the consequences of their research, Tenma Tasuku abandoned his work. He later established the Sakura Garden orphanage to care for children who had lost their families in the incident. One of these children was Sawashiro Kyo, who met Tasuku's grandson Tenma Asuka there.
The incident also profoundly affected Klay Arslan. Having already lost his homeland and then witnessed the destruction of Kano Island, Klay came to believe that power was the only means of avoiding exploitation. His experience with Sunarizamon marked the beginning of their partnership and influenced his later pursuit of military, political, and financial power.

The Kano Island Incident is first discussed during a meeting between Chairman Wong and the Five Stars. The publicly accepted account describes it as a catastrophic earthquake that occurred twenty-one years earlier, causing extensive subsidence and flooding and leaving approximately 1.3 million people dead or missing.[1]
The truth is later revealed by Klay Arslan. Twenty-one years earlier, Klay and other refugees were living on Kano Island while Wong and Tenma Tasuku conducted experiments involving e-Pulse. The experiments caused numerous Digimon to emerge, including Sunarizamon, which was born from Klay's e-Pulse. After the Digimon fought over the available e-Pulse, an enormous Digimon appeared and subsequently disintegrated, releasing the energy that destroyed the island. Wong concealed the Digimon's involvement and became determined to recreate the power he had witnessed.[2]
It is subsequently revealed that Tasuku established the Sakura Garden orphanage after the incident to care for children who had lost their families. Sawashiro Kyo was among the orphans placed in his care.[3]
