Kano Island Incident
The Kano Island Incident (神生島消失事件 "Kanōjima Shōshitsu Jiken"?, lit. "Kano Island Disappearance Incident") was a catastrophic event that occurred on Kano Island on October 5, 2029, twenty-one years before the main events of Digimon Beatbreak. The incident resulted in the disappearance of most of the island, caused extensive subsidence and flooding throughout Japan's coastal regions, and left approximately 1.3 million people dead or missing. Although officially attributed to an unprecedented earthquake and the resulting crustal deformation, the disaster was actually caused by Digimon that emerged during Chairman Wong's experiments involving e-Pulse. The truth was subsequently concealed by Wong.

Before the incident, Chairman Wong operated a research facility on Kano Island where experiments involving e-Pulse were conducted alongside researchers such as Dr. Tenma Tasuku, who used the data to begin developing the Sapotama. In order to supply test subjects, the facility took in refugees from other countries, such as Klay Arslan of the fallen Alvida Kingdom.
The experiments eventually caused numerous Digimon to emerge from the e-Pulse of the people present. The Digimon attacked the facility's researchers and began fighting one another for e-Pulse. Klay's own e-Pulse gave birth to Sunarizamon, which protected him from several of the other Digimon. The Digimon grew as they consumed the humans' e-Pulse and each other, resulting in the apotheosis of an enormous gestalt Digimon who Wong, Tasuku, and Klay witnessed as they fled the island. The Digimon vanished in a burst of energy that obliterated the island and produced widespread land subsidence and flooding in the surrounding coastal regions. Approximately 1.3 million people were killed or reported missing, and the geography of Japan was permanently altered. Some of the known victims include Sawashiro Kyo and Karina's[1] parents.
Afterward, Wong concealed the exact details of the disaster. The public was instead informed that an unprecedented earthquake had caused crustal deformation and widespread land subsidence. From that point on, Wong became determined to acquire the power he had seen in the Digimon that appeared in Kano Island, so he promoted the commercial use of e-Pulse and the widespread adoption of the Sapotama as part of his Shangri-La Project, ignoring the dangers that it might pose to the public in a mad pursuit for power. Conversely, Dr. Tenma was appalled by the consequences of their research, so he abandoned his work, swore off Sapotamas, and established the Sakura Garden orphanage to care for the children orphaned in the disaster where Kyo befriended Tasuku's grandson Tenma Asuka[2]. Klay took a third tack in response—he came to believe that power was the only means of avoiding exploitation, and began building a criminal empire to capture and control Digimon for his own gain and in hopes of subverting Wong's machinations.
In 2050, Wong references the Kano incident while briefing the Five Stars on the Shangri-La Project, describing it only in terms of the publicly-accepted account.[3]
After Klay and his Tactics organization are exposed to the public, Klay reveals the involvement of Digimon and Wong in the incident to Glowing Dawn, in an attempt to justify his actions.[4]
