Appearances[edit]

Manga[edit]

Digimon World Re:Digitize[edit]

While Professor Petrov does not appear directly in the manga, he's mentioned several times.

After the Digital Monsters MMORPG went down in "Digital Monster", Taiga asked Nicolai Petrov if his father, a research technician at GIGO Company, had told him anything about it, but Nico answered that he was too busy with work to even come home. He then explained that GIGO Company had a monopoly on the world's wireless industries, and wondered if the network acting up and his dad not coming home were caused by a GIGO mistake, though he quickly said it was a joke.

Mikagura Mirei's independent investigation on servers that had suddenly gone down without explanation a few years ago and GIGO Company being the only one to succeed in maintaining their systems and make rapid progress afterwards led her to a certain mystery: Project Vitium, which GIGO had triggered the incident with, according to the fragmented records that remained on GIGO's server, and the man leading it was Professor Yakov Petrov, who had mysteriously disappeared according to records of the project. Mirei thought only the doctor's whereabouts could give her the truth.

In "Complication!", after the fight between War Greymon and Black, Mirei thought about how she found Nico interesting because he was the son of Professor Petrov who developed the Digitize technology.

Professor Yakov Borisovich Petrov was one of the Russian researchers the GIGO Company brought in to discover the existence of the Digital World. However, he disappeared before the start of the game.

After Taiga defeated his son, Nicolai Petrov, in the Colosseum 1st Floor Free Battle: "Fight Nico the Brave!", Nico explained that he found out his father had been working on a secret project, then some people from his work showed up at their home, saying he took some data without permission. Still, Nico was sure his dad did nothing wrong and must've had a good reason to do that. Later on, after obtaining Garbage Data in Signpost Woods that seemed to be a mail written by him, Nico realized his dad was still alive. Nico then explained to the rest that his dad worked for GIGO as an engineer, but he disappeared a few months ago. He thought his father's disappearance, the incidents in the Digital World, and their own appearance in it were all connected. Kuga Yuuya mocked his father as a mad scientist then left, angering Nico. Yuuya would double down on this in Fluorescent Cave, accusing Professor Petrov's Vitium experiments of hurting GIGO's reputation. Looking for Professor Petrov's signal in the Underground Waterway Labyrinth, Mikagura Mirei found a berserk Garurumon, cloaked in a dark aura.

Taiga, Nico, Rindou Akiho, Mirei and Yuuya found Professor Petrov in the Digitower after activating the Memorial Stellae of the Underground Waterway Labyrinth and Fluorescent Cave. His presence put the Digitower in Alert Mode, as an unidentified human. After seeing them, he madly exclaimed that Vitium was perfect and he wouldn't allow anyone to touch it. He intended to use the Digitower so it'd grow even further. Nico told him they needed to stop Vitium to return to the Real World, which made him decide they had to die for threatening Vitium. As such, he sent his Metal Greymon, cloaked in a dark aura, to fight Digimaru and Sashenka. After defeating Metal Greymon, Professor Petrov returned to his senses, but Nico was still extremely angry at him, who left his family without a word and then attacked them when they reunited. Before Professor Petrov could answer him, a distortion opened behind him and Vitium Adult appeared from it. The professor asked Nico for forgiveness, then disappeared into the distortion alongside Vitium. To calm Nico down, Mirei explained that the distortion had to lead somewhere in the Digital World, so his father was still somewhere in it, though she couldn't say where without more data.

Searching for his signal, the group went to the Gravel Wasteland, where they found Vitium Adult. After restoring the Memorial Stella, Professor Petrov appeared from a distortion. He apologised for involving Nico but refused to explain the situation, though he did say that he created Vitium, which he regretted and he wanted to return everything to its original state, for which he created a vaccine, the "Gospel Structure", which was destroyed by Vitium while incomplete. The Garbage Data was, in fact, the scattered pieces of the Gospel Structure, which he begged the other humans to gather as Vitium was about to reach its ultimate state. He then said that Yuuya was headed to the Memorial Stella in the Night Canyon, and disappeared into a distortion once again. Nico was left confused as to which of his fathers was the real one. Mirei refused to trust him, as the code she saw stated the Garbage Data was the Re:Digitize program, not the Gospel Structure, and intended to debug it before using it.

After obtaining the Garbage Data 08, Professor Petrov sends Nico and Taiga a mail, asking Taiga to bring all the Garbage Data to Binary Castle, which should be possible to access if he restored all Memorial Stella. He emphasized he was running out of time.

After obtaining all the Garbage Data, Mirei found Professor Petrov and his Rize Greymon confronting Vitium Adult in Binary Castle. The Professor admitted he brought Vitium into the world and asked it for forgiveness as he had Rize Greymon open fire on it. Suddenly, Vitium spoke, calling him a selfish being, shocking both Petrov and Mirei. It then knocked the Professor and Rize Greymon down, killing the latter. Nico rushed forward, but Mirei stopped him since they needed to defend themselves. Vitium easily defeated Mirei, Nico, Sashenka and Lady Devimon, followed by Taiga and Digimaru. Professor Petrov got back up, then threw something at Vitium Adult to weaken it enough for Digimaru to beat it. However, weakened as it was, it still managed to escape into a distortion. Professor Petrov then collapsed once again, with Nico scared about his state. Rather than pursuing Vitium, he wanted to get his dad to somewhere where he could be treated, which Mirei agreed with, so he asked Mirei and Taiga to help him carry his dad to Jijimon's House.

Having recovered in Jijimon's house, Professor Petrov once again apologised for getting everyone involved, then explains he's an engineer at GIGO who's in charge of developing the Vitium program, a program that was discovered by chance and was originally meant to connect the Digital and Real Worlds and exchange data between them. The Professor knew it coudn't be controlled but argued the concerns about it were unfounded, but he was overruled by his bosses who believed Vitium would threaten the Real World if it evolved as a life form. Out of time, Petrov assembled the Digitize program and sent himself to the Digital World, but Garbage Data entered his consciousness due to being too close to Vitium, which put him under Vitium's control until he was saved by Taiga and Nico. However, by this time, Vitium had grown too powerful to be stopped. He asked the children to go back to the Real World using a program he prepared. Nico refused, since he saw it as just running away and asked him to fight together. Mirei pointed out that the program he used to weaken Vitium seemed similar to the Re:Digitize program and an impressed Professor acknowledged it was based on the Gospel Structure. Mirei realized that if they got the missing part, they could complete the Gospel Structure, rather than the Re:Digitize program, and use it to stop Vitium. Professor Petrov acknowledged they all arrived safely to the Digital World thanks to Mirei's program, so maybe they could do it. He explained the missing piece was Garbage Data 00, used for processing the limit of the function, and Mirei should be able to restore the program with it. Akiho realized it must be close to a Memorial Stella if it was Garbage Data so they just had to look for it, which the rest agreed with.

Talking to Taiga alone, the Professor said he believed Taiga could do it since he was the one who found the keyword, Re:Digitize, but wodndered how he did so since only engineers should know that word. Taiga cam either say he saw it somewhere, which the Professor explains must've been because documents with the keyword were flowing around since the incident, then a third party discovered them and spread them as spam; or explain he saw it in his study, which the Professor realized must've been when he went to his house to play. Professor Petrov wondered if he should regret that but that made Taiga their only hope. That said, it still gave him confused feelings. He also knew Taiga possessed a peculiar aptitude but didn't know much about it, though he reasoned Taiga entering the Digital World must mean he has a special destiny, and perhaps he and the rest were the only ones who could save the Digital World since the Professor couldn't stop Vitium anymore.

After Mirei completed the Gospel Structure, Professor Petrov praised her. After a quake happened, the group left Jijimon's house, and Professor Petrov realized the sky looked as if Vitium was devouring the atmosphere, so it was probably trying to erode the Real World from the top of the Digitower. Everyone was ready to go fight Vitium, so Professor Petrov apologised once again for burdening them with that fate, but they wanted to protect the Digital World and the Digimon they loved.

After Taiga defeated Vitium Ultimate and returned to the Digital World, Professor Petrov and Jijimon entered the Colosseum to congratulate the heroes on their victory and on achieving peace once again. Nico broke down crying, but his father tried to calm him down, telling him they'd have plenty of time to talk once they're back home. Both then thanked Taiga for saving the world. However, Barbamon then showed itself. Professor Petrov realized the elevator had stopped working due to Barbamon's interference and they were now trapped, though it started working again later. The Professor also realized that a new floor, the 50th, was now available in it, and someone hostile to Barbamon should be in the Digitower to have disabled the security. From Mirei's computer, he realized said hostile presence was another human, so he decided to go back to the control room and continue investigating.

To help Beelzebumon defeat Barbamon, Professor Petrov sent Taiga a mail, telling him to go meet an artist Digimon, Vikemon, in Powdery Cliff, as his calculations told him that Digimon would have a great impact on Taiga's destiny. The Digimon that would make a difference was not Vikemon, though, but Boltmon who was in the same place.

After Taiga defeated Lucemon: Satan Mode and stopped the distortion, the group went to the Railroad Plains, where Professor Petrov had Mirei activate the Re:Digitize Program. Jijimon thanked the humans for saving the world. Mirei explained she wasn't, or rather, couldn't go back to the Real World, because she only existed as a consciousness in the Digital World, having been sent to it in the past due to an experiment, before Vitium existed. Professor Petrov realized she was the one from that time. They were then sent back to the Real World.

Professor Petrov may join the Colosseum 40th floor Tournament "The strongest is..." alongside Shine Greymon.
