Debut Digimon Adventure - Digital Dungeon α
Type Dungeon
Part of: N/A

The Digital Dungeon is an exclusive location to the Digimon Adventure game. All the optional Digital Dungeons happen in it, as does the last arc of the game, the crossover with the other anime, that starts in Episode 67, "Training Digimon? Hackmon".

It exists in a different dimension to the main Digital World of Digimon Adventure, and it's perfect for training.

All areas of the Digital Dungeon look nearly identical, a black background with many moving, tiny hexagons. The walls and floors are made of green lines that form squares, visually similar to Golemon (PS). It's formed of square rooms which may contain wild Digimon, connected by rectangular passages. The room the player starts from has a purple panel with EXIT written in it which allows them to leave the Digital Dungeon, while another has a yellow one with arrows that lets them move forward. Certain floors have save points, these only have a single path and may contain a boss battle. If this is the last boss battle of the dungeon, there'll be no yellow panel at the end, as the player is teleported out of the Digital Dungeon after winning the fight.

Digimon Adventure[edit]

The Chosen Children travel to the six Digital Dungeons - α, β, γ, δ. ε. and ζ, for training purpouses during their adventure in the Digital World. In them, they face a variety of Digimon and gain rewards for defeating the bosses in the dungeons.

Yagami Taichi and Agumon suddenly found themselves in Area 1 of the Digital Dungeon in Episode 67, "Training Digimon? Hackmon", after getting back to the Digital World from Tokyo and sleeping close to a bonfire. They had vague memories of having been there before but could not remember exactly when, and none of the other Chosen Children were around. They then met Hackmon, who suspected them. He then pointed out they looked strong and challenged them to a fight, which Taichi and Agumon found weird. Hackmon introduced himself and Taichi asked why he wanted to fight Agumon, he then answered he wanted to fight someone strong, even if he didn't know where he was or why he was there. Hackmon explained he was training in the mountains when someone approached him while taking a nap, and then he found himself in the Digital Dungeon. Since he was asleep, he couldn't see who this was, but he felt a presence. Agumon pointed out he also felt someone while they were sleeping, though he didn't tell Taichi because he thought he was just dreaming. While Hackmon acknowledged their situations were the same, he still wanted to fight Agumon. Taichi proposed to search for the exit instead, and Agumon agreed since they knew the place so they should be able to find it. Agumon asked Hackmon if no one would be worried for him, and Hackmon answered that "they" would be concerned for his absence, adding that "they" were not his friends but his caretakers, which convined Agumon he really was weird. Regardless, Hackmon agreed to find a way out first, though Taichi and Agumon were worried.

Upon hitting Area 2, Hackmon asked Taichi if he wasn't a Digimon, and he explained he came to the Digital World from another one. When Hackmon asked him how he did so, and Taichi merely said that lots of stuff happened. Agumon asked Hackmon what he usually did, and Hackmon answered he trained to become stronger. He had a dream, though refused to share it.

Upon reaching Area 3, Agumon saw the exit, a glowing green panel. Taichi assumed they would part ways now, Hackmon asked Agumon to fight him next time they met since he'd be really strong by then. Agumon didn't want to but Taichi found it funny. They both gave each other their farewells and left.

However, said exit only led them back to Area 1 in Episode 68, "Golden Armor! Magnamon". Hackmon said they were truly trapped and Agumon that it must be because of the person that brought them there. They were then approached by Motomiya Daisuke and V-mon, who recognized Taichi and Agumon although the pair didn't know who they were. Daisuke asked Taichi to calm down and look at his goggles, explaining Taichi gave them to him and that he was his junior. Taichi realized both goggles shared the exact same scratches. Daisuke wondered if Taichi didn't remember him, saying he was a fifth-grader at Odaiba Elementary on the same class as Yagami Hikari and Takaishi Takeru, which confused Taichi as Takeru was in second grade. Daisuke then realized Taichi was shorter than he remembered and asked V-mon if he was dreaming, which he checked by hitting him, proving it wasn't a dream, though V-mon hit him too hard and Daisuke lost consciousness for a moment. During that time, V-mon explained to the duo that they were from three years in the future, making Daisuke realize it as well and Agumon that the Digital Dungeon was connected to other time periods. Taichi asked him what he was going to do and Daisuke found it obvious they'd team up, with him adding that he had always wanted to go on an adventure with his senior like Hikari and Takeru had.

Daisuke and Magnamon then join the party as guests. Magnamon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal damage to all enemies with Extreme Jihad, deal damage to one enemy with Plasma Shoot, increase the attack and defense of the entire party with Light Aura Barrier, heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +, or revive a downed ally with full HP with Revive. He can take two actions per turn thanks to his Continuous Action support ability.

Upon reaching Area 2, Daisuke and V-mon explained that they were attacked by a black shadow as they returned from school then found themselves in the Digital Dungeon. Taichi recognized the similarities to Hackmon's story, then Hackmon said that something bothered him, and asked him if Daisuke and him were V-mon and Agumon's attendants. Taichi explained Agumon was his friend and Partner, and Hackmon asked why he didn't have one. Daisuke explained that in his time he went to the Digital World and lifted a Digimental, which awakened V-mon. From his part, Taichi met Agumon at File Island for the first time, when he was a Koromon. Hackmon asked Taichi to become his Partner, which angered Agumon as Taichi was his Partner. Hackmon offered Agumon a fight for Taichi, though he refused. Hackmon asked once again where his Partner was and Taichi thought he was a real character.

Once again, the exit portal was in Area 3, with V-mon seeing it this time. However, before they could reach it, a dark fog appeared and took the form of Magnamon, to Daisuke's surprise. V-mon realized it was a copy of him. Hackmon asked Taichi what they should do and Taichi knew they had to defeat it, so Hackmon decided to watch him, refusing to fight someone stronger than him. After defeating it, it disappeared. The heroes celebrated, then Taichi and Agumon ran to the exit, leaving Daisuke and V-mon behind. Taichi, Agumon and Hackmon crossed a boundary, but Daisuke and V-mon couldn't. Daisuke was worried they were trapped there, Agumon thought it was some kind of barrier that only let them through, and Hackmon asked what they should do since they'd be stuck there otherwise. Daisuke lamented that he wouldn't get his adventure with Taichi. Taichi said there had to ba reason why they were sent to the Digital Dungeon, so if they both looked for it, they'd meet again at some point. Daisuke wondered if it really was going to be that easy and V-mon said they could only believe, so Daisuke decided to. Taichi and Daisuke then separated, with Daisuke thinking even back in elementary school, Taichi was still Taichi.

The group found themselves on the Area 1 of another floor in Episode 69, "Crimson Knight! Dukemon". They were then distracted by the sound of a stomach growling, both Taichi and Hackmon thought it was Agumon's, but he denied it, then pointed them to the direction it came from. The actual starving party was Guilmon, who was alongside Matsuda Takato, who tried to get him to lower his voice. Taichi and Hackmon asked them for their names, the latter more rudely than the former, and they introduced themselves, with Takato pointing out they both had Digimon. Taichi and Agumon then introduced themselves, which surprised Takato, though he tried to pass it off as saying Taichi's name was that of a famous person he knew. Guilmon didn't try to hide how amazed he was to see Agumon, of whom Takato had a figure of in his room. Takato tried to get him to shut up and passed his comment as an in-joke. Hackmon was unwilling to trust them, Guilmon asked who he was, and Hackmon said both his name and that he loved fighting strong guys. Guilmon answered that he loved eating bread at Takato's place, Hackmon found the entire conversation odd. Taichi asked them how they got there, and they explained that Takato took bread to Guilmon after school, and while Guilmon was eating it, a big fuzzy thing appeared, then they found themselves in the Digital Dungeon. A black fog then appeared behind them, which Takato recognized as what they saw. The fog told them to go further in, and upon being asked what it wanted from them, said they had to fight and go further in, or else, then disappeared in a flash of light. Hackmon wanted to fight it. Taichi refused to do as it wanted, but Agumon pointed out they had to keep going further in if they wanted to get out of there, so Hackmon accepted they had no choice but to do as it said, which Taichi agreed with. Takato and Guilmon said they'd go with them, which Taichi found reassuring.

Takato and Dukemon then join the party as guests. Dukemon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal multiple hits to all enemies with Royal Saber and Final Elysion, deal damage to one enemy with Royal Slash, or heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +. He can take two actions per turn thanks to his Continuous Action support ability.

Upon reaching Area 2, Guilmon asked Takato why he didn't say anything when he got to meet Taichi and Agumon, namely that he already knew them, but Takato thought that'd just confuse them, that Digimon was an actual franchise in his world. Besides, being in the presence of people he admired was good enough for Takato. Taichi then told him to get going. Takato wondered if his friends at school would believe him if he told them about this, Guilmon pointed out he looked happy, and Takato reminded him to keep this a secret from Taichi.

Once again, the exit portal was in Area 3, with Guilmon seeing it this time. Guilmon happily ran towards it but his path was blocked by the black fog which then took the form of Dukemon, confusing Guilmon as to why there was another him. Takato wondered if it was a fake Guilmon. Hackmon pointed out it was dangerous. Once again, defeating it caused it to disappear. Guilmon pointed out it was a hard fight and Takato that it hurt a lot. Hackmon praised them. Taichi told Takato they'd have to split off, as he had realized he'd be meeting someone new on every level. Takato asked Taichi to shake his hand, to everyone's surprise. Takato was overjoyed to do so, to Taichi's confusion, but he was glad he was happy nonetheless. Taichi, Agumon and Hackmon then left, but not before the former promised they'd find a way out. After separating, Guilmon told Takato he wanted more of his family bread, and Takato said they'd find a way home, no matter what.

In a new Area 1 in Episode 70, "Dragon Warrior, Kaiser Greymon", Agumon tiredly asked how long they'd have to keep going, and Hackmon wondered what the black fog wanted with them. Taichi merely answered they had to stop it no matter what. Agumon then realized someone was close. That someone was Agnimon, who exclaimed "you're back", confusing the others who had never seen him before. Agnimon thought they were mocking him and attempted to attack Agumon but Taichi got in his way. Agnimon asked who he was, and Taichi acknowledged he didn't understand the situation but was sure Agnimon mistook Agumon for someone else. Hackmon wanted to take Agnimon on but Taichi saw Agnimon's gentle eyes and knew he didn't want to fight. Agnimon acknowledged his mistake and devolved into Kanbara Takuya, then apologised. That a human evolved into a Digimon was a shock for Taichi and Agumon. Hackmon asked Takuya why he attacked them and Takuya explained that a human with an Agumon attacked him earlier. Taichi thought this meant a copy of Agumon was in the Digital Dungeon too, which Hackmon didn't find surprising considering they met copies of others. Taichi and Takuya were glad they avoided fighting each other. Taichi offered Takuya to join them since both were trapped in the Digital Dungeon, and Takuya realized their situation was the same and joined up.

Takuya as Kaiser Greymon then joins the party as a guest. Kaiser Greymon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal multiple hits to all enemies with Kuzuryūjin, deal damage to one enemy with Enryūgeki, deal damage to all enemies with Ryūgonken, or heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +. He can take two actions per turn and return damage taken with a critical hit thanks to his Continuous Action and Ultra Counter support abilities.

Upon reaching Area 2, Taichi asked Takuya about how a human attacked him. Takuya explained he looked like a middle school student and had an Agumon with him. Taichi pointed out Takuya must've been a Digimon at the time, which he confirmed. Taichi and Hackmon were surprised a middle school student would attack a Digimon. Takuya said he had a really strong punch, comparing him to the goalkeeper of his last football match. Taichi was surprised Takuya played football too and viceversa. They both bonded over getting punched by their goalkeepers a lot. Hackmon asked Agumon if football was a kind of human martial arts, which Agumon denied.

Upon reaching Area 3, the group was attacked by the black fog once more which took the form of Kaiser Greymon. Takuya wondered who it was and Hackmon explained it was another fake. After defeating it, Takuya and Hackmon were relieved, but Agumon knew it meant they had to part with Takuya. Takuya knew they were together for a short time but he had learned much from them. Both humans were glad they met each other and had fun talking about football. After sepaarting, Takuya thought he had to get fired up.

Starting from a new Area 1 in Episode 71, "Light Dragon! Shine Greymon", Hackmon wondered how much time had passed since they got to the Digital Dungeon. Agumon pointed out he was starving, while Taichi focused on how the flow of time felt weird and wondered where they were even going. Hackmon promised to beat the black shadow to a pulp. Taichi asked him to let them fight with him but Hackmon didn't want to fight with weak people, leaving Taichi speechless. Their attention was then called by Daimon Masaru and his Agumon, the latter of which was surprised by the existence of another Agumon who looked just like him. Taichi was just as surprised, while Masaru thought Taichi's Agumon was a fake one, making Savers Agumon think they were the true identity of the black shadow. For Hackmon, they were just saying weird stuff. Masaru challenged Taichi to a fair fistfight, as did his Agumon to Taichi's, then evolved into Shine Greymon to fight him.

After the fight, Taichi tried to stop them, which annoyed Masaru as it was a fight between men. Taichi and Hackmon explained they were trapped in the Digital Dungeon by the black shadow. Masaru and Agumon realized they were in the same boat and accepted their mistake. Hackmon realized there were humans who liked fighting too. Taichi introduced himself and Hackmon, as did Masaru as the number one street fighter in Japan. Hackmon was curious about his title and Taichi tried to explain it. Hackmon was happy Masaru seemed as enthusiastic as he was about training. Taichi and Masaru decided to go together, with the latter itching for a fight, but they left before the rest could catch up. Hackmon thought they seemed to have a lot of fun with their training.

Masaru and Shine Greymon then join the party as guests. Shine Greymon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal multiple hits to all enemies with Glorious Burst, deal damage to one enemy with GeoGrey Sword and Shining Blast, or heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +. He can take two actions per turn and increase his attack upon taking damage thanks to his Continuous Action and Anger support abilities.

Upon reaching Area 2, Savers Agumon got a whiff of the black shadow's scent and Masaru was ready to follow it, but Taichi stopped them because charging in like that was too dangerous. Masaru acknowledged it but justified it saying it was his style. His Agumon then lost track of the scent. Adventure Agumon asked his Savers counterpart why he always called Masaru "aniki", and Masaru answered that Agumon was his follower. The latter then explained that they communicated with their fists the first time they met, which shocked Taichi. Masaru said Agumon was good at punching and Agumon returned the compliment, then they both laughed.

The black shadow reappeared in Area 3 and took the form of Shine Greymon. Masaru and Agumon immediately called it as a fake, and the whole team was roaring for a fight. Having defeated the black shadow, Masaru praised both his and Taichi's fighting skills and Taichi thanked him for his help. However, Hackmon was wary because he felt someone was watching them. From a burst of light, Gankoomon appeared in front of them. Taichi and Agumon realized he was the one who brought them to the Digital Dungeon. Masaru thought he looked intimidating and his Agumon wondered if Gankoomon was an Ultimate-level Digimon. Hackmon knew who Gankoomon was, called him by name, then rushed at him. However, Gankoomon easily sent him flying while calling out his lack of experience. Hackmon refused to give up, and Taichi and Agumon were angry at their friend getting hurt. Gankoomon said their job was done. Taichi asked him what he brought them there for, but Gankoomon refused to explain, instead saying they had little time, then left in another flash of light. Masaru was worried for Hackmon, but one of the Agumon said he'd be alright though he couldn't talk, which calmed Taichi down. Taichi's Agumon asked him why he decided to fight by himself. Taichi asked him how he knew Gankoomon and Masaru thought they'd figure it out once Hackmon recovered. Nonetheless, both Masaru and his Agumon were in awe of Hackmon's guts, taking on such a strong enemy. Masaru left Hackmon in Taichi's hands to chase after Gankoomon, feeling he couldn't rest until he took him out, and his Agumon agreed. Taichi and his own Agumon refused to turn back because Gankoomon told them to. Masaru accepted they were separating but not before telling Taichi a fight wasn't over until a party gave up, which Taichi refused to do.

In the next Area 1 in Episode 72, "Shout! Omega Shoutmon", Taichi asked Agumon if he could feel Gankoomon's presence, but he couldn't. He then asked Hackmon if he was fine but he was still unable to talk. Suddenly, four Chrysalimon appeared in a flash of light, surrounding the party. Taichi didn't know how they could escape with the wounded Hackmon. Kudou Taiki and Shoutmon then appeared and destroyed two of them, before asking Taichi and the rest if they were okay. Taiki and Shoutmon introduced themselves, the latter as the Digimon King, which confused Agumon, but Taiki thought it best to focus on getting out of there first. The group then escaped through the opening Shoutmon made.

Taiki and Omega Shoutmon then join the party as guests. Omega Shoutmon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal multiple hits to one enemy with Hard Rock Damashii and Beat Slash, deal multiple hits to all enemies with Heavy Metal Vulcan, heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +, or increase the defense of one Digimon by two stages with DEF Charge Ω. He can take two actions per turn thanks to his Continuous Action support ability.

As they reached Area 2, Taichi taught Taiki about Gankoomon, the responsible for trapping them in the Digital Dungeon. Agumon added that Hackmon knew Gankoomon. Taiki said he had tried to gather information since they were sent to the Digital Dungeon, and thanks to Taichi and the rest he now had a good grasp of the situation. Taiki asked them to join forces to look for a way out which Taichi agreed with. Shoutmon pointed out they were now allied with Team Xros Heart, and Taiki explained it was the team name for all their friends. Shoutmon added that Taiki was their General who led them into battle. Taichi thought Shoutmon really liked Taiki and Shoutmon said that Taiki couldn't turn his back on those in need, which Taiki added angered Shoutmon sometimes.

The black shadow once again appeared in Area 3, taking the form of Omega Shoutmon. Shoutmon was angered he was copied. Taiki told him not to let his guard down, then they fought. After defeating his copy, Shoutmon exclaimed that was the power of the real Digimon King and Taichi praised Agumon. Taichi said they'd split up now and thanked Taiki for his help, which Taiki returned. Shoutmon was worried for Hackmon, who still couldn't talk, but Agumon told him to leave him to them. Before splitting up, Taiki told Taichi that another person had come with them and asked Taichi to take care of him if they met, and he'd help him in return. Taichi's group then left.

Reaching the next Area 1 in Episode 73, "Dragon Beast! Arresterdramon", the group immediately saw Gankoomon about to fight Akashi Tagiru and Arresterdramon. However, Gankoomon easily swatted Arresterdramon aside while remarking his inexperience. Taichi then got closer to Gankoomon but he left in a flash of light. Arresterdramon apologised to Tagiru for letting Gankoomon get away but he was ready to just go look for him again. Taichi then asked Tagiru if he was Taiki's friend, which caused Tagiru to scream and run for a moment, because he had completely forgotten about Taiki. He then decided to go back but Arresterdramon asked him what to do about Taichi and the others. Tagiru accepted he forgot about them too but then asked them to team up, which Taichi agreed with.

Tagiru and Arresterdramon then join the party as guests. Arresterdramon can't be controlled, has 9999 HP and infinite SP. He can deal damage to all enemies with Prism Garrett, deal damage to one Digimon with Spin Caliber, deal multiple hits to one enemy with Mach Flicker, heal the entire party for 2000 HP with Giga Heal +, or increase his attack and defense with Focus. He can take two actions per turn thanks to his Continuous Action support ability.

In Area 2, Tagiru introduced himself and Arresterdramon. He stated he was Taiki's junior and a Digimon Hunter, the latter title shocking Taichi and Agumon, but he added they didn't take other people's Digimon, which calmed Agumon down.

In Area 3, the black shadow appeared once again and took the form of Arresterdramon. The real Arresterdramon identified it as a fake, and Tagiru realized it was the same phenomenon he was told about. After defeating it, both pairs of huamns and Digimon complimented each other. Tagiru thought that meant Taichi could go home, but then Gankoomon reappeared. He said that they, the Chosen Ones, had finally arrived. Agumon wanted to get revenge for Hackmon while Tagiru wanted to capture Gankoomon. Hackmon finally recovered and Gankoomon asked him if he finally trained properly, while Hackmon asked him if he let a silly little punch get him down. They both then laughed, to everyone's confusion. Hackmon explained Gankoomon was his guardian of sorts, Agumon asked him why he attacked Gankoomon previously then, and Hackmon answered he always did that as a sort of daily ritual for them, because otherwise Gankoomon would get him instead. Taichi thought they hated each other and were mortal enemies. Tagiru asked him what he was since he clearly wasn't a normal Digimon. Hackmon answered Gankoomon was one of the Royal Knights who protected the order of the Digital World, and someday he'd be just as strong. Taichi then asked Gankoomon why he trapped them in the Digital Dungeon. Gankoomon explained they needed them to correct the distortions in the digital fields as something with great power had forced itself into that space and was hastening its collapse. Agumon asked him what said distortions were, and Gankoomon explained that distorted fragments of the Digital World were gathering in the Digital Dungeon, forming a being which copied the appearance of the Partner Digimon and continued to grow without any conscience. If they ignored the copies, they would continue to permeate through things and gain power, and if they overflowed from the Digital Dungeon, they would completely cover the Digital Field. Taichi realized that would affect their world too. Gankoomon pointed out there wasn't much time left before that space collapsed, so he opened the door to the spatial core that controlled it for the Chosen Ones while he staved off the collapse. He then called Hackmon to his side and told him he was still immature but his potential exceeded even Gankoomon's own, so he was to lead the Chosen Ones to the spatial core to fix the source that had gone haywire. Taichi and Agumon refused to run away from the issue and Tagiru and Arresterdramon wanted to join them. Hackmon called them, and Tagiru stated he had reached his limits in his training as a Digimon Hunter so he was ready to show them a real Hunt. Gankoomon stated that, to do so, they first would save the Digital Field. Taichi and Agumon were confident they would find a way to do it.

They continued to the spatial core in Episode 74, "Everyone Unite! The Final Battle". They quickly met again with the other protagonists. They reunited because they heard about Gankoomon and Hackmon. Takuya pointed out a lot happened but it wasn't the time to deal with it and Masaru apologised to him for attacking him earlier. Taiki pointed out their first priority was to deal with this. However, a quake suddenly hit the Digital Dungeon, followed by the appearance of two Diablomon and a Keramon. Taichi realized they wouldn't get to the spatial core so easily. Masaru proposed them all to break in at once, Taiki thought they should conserve their energy, Takato proposed to split into pairs but Taichi pointed out they wouldn't make it in time like that. Daisuke told Taichi to just go ahead and Takuya recognized him as their leader. Hackmon told Taichi to pick who should go with them. If the player refuses every choice, Taichi won't be able to pick, and Hackmon will hurry him up to do it.

The spatial core

Taichi and his group quickly reached the spatial core. Hackmon felt something coming, said something was a copy of War Greymon. Agumon and Hackmon realized this was the very last copy and their victory would stop the spatial control core. After defeating the copy, Hackmon exclaimed they had no time left then ran into the core, which recreated every copy. Hackmon asked Taichi and Agumon to deliver his message to Gankoomon: that he successfully guided the Chosen Children to the spatial core, then shouted.

Upon regaining consciousness, Hackmon found himself back in the normal Digital Dungeon, surrounded by the protagonists. He asked them what happened to the spatial control core. Agumon told him everything was fine and the copies were gone. Gankoomon then arrived and praised everyone. The Chosen Children were ready to go back to their own worlds, each with their own thoughts. Gankoomon granted them a reward: to face them, as a Royal Knight. After a harsh fight, the team won, with Hackmon being gladly surprised they did. Gankoomon wondered if that was the power of humans allied with Digimon. Hackmon and Gankoomon agreed they still had a lot of training to do. Taichi asked Gankoomon if they could finally go home. Gankoomon said yes, but added they would lose all memories they got in the Digital Space upon leaving it, since if they kept those memories from a space that existed beyond space-time, it would disturb the order of the Digital Field. Hackmon thought it was a shame since they just got to know each other, but the protagonists accepted it, if not without regrets, with Taiki and Tagiru feeling they'd meet again. They all then promised to do so, before finally separating.

After starting New Game +, a final Digital Dungeon opens, Digital Dungeon: η.
