Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers

Evolution generally follows the same rules, mechanics, and paths as in the Digital Monster Vers. 1–4 virtual pets, from which Ver. S is adapted. All evolutions are one-way, and occur as in-game time elapses depending on how the Digimon is raised.

Unlike the original virtual pets, training has no influence at all on how a Digimon evolves. Instead, the Digimon's affection for the player — i.e. how much the player has interacted with the Digimon on the home screen, and how the Digimon reacts to the player's interactions — affects what the Digimon will evolve into in the same way that the number of times the Digimon undertakes training does in the original virtual pets.

As in the original virtual pets, evolution to the Perfect Generation is not guaranteed. Once a Digimon has fought the required minimum of 15 battles to qualify to evolve to Perfect, this is marked on its stat screen by the "Win Rate" label turning red instead of blue.

New Digitama

As the player progresses through the game, they will become able to obtain the New Digitama 「ＮＥＷ　デジタマ」 item. This item may be used to fuse any two Digimon of Child Generation or higher into one of five new Adult Digimon species that did not exist in the Digital Monster virtual pets: Gorimon, Gesomon, Tailmon, Evilmon and Gokimon.

The resulting Digimon is determined based on the Attributes of the two original Digimon, in the order in which they are selected for use in the New Digitama:

Any other attribute combination not charted above, including any two Digimon with the same Attribute, will result in Gokimon.

Digimon Fragments

Additionally, all Adult and Perfect Digimon from Vers. 1–4 are associated with a Digimon Fragment 「デジモンのかけら」 item. Using a Fragment on a compatible Digimon guarantees that when the time comes for the Digimon to evolve, it will evolve into the species corresponding to the Fragment, regardless of any evolution requirements.

There are no Digimon Fragments for any of the "Ver. S" Digimon.
