While the Colosseum can be accessed as soon as the tutorial is done, Akira is not able to actually enter the tournaments until after Centalmon is defeated. After that is done, his Leader (Vandar, Cecilia, or Skull) gives him an Entry Pass to enter the Tamer Ranking Tournaments in the Colosseum, not to win or lose but to sharpen his skills through battle.
Afterwards, Akira can enter said Tamer Ranking Tournaments by talking to an Operator in the Colosseum's right side. Tournaments work under similar rules than normal battles, however, items are not allowed, and no DigiBeetle functions may be used. Every Tournament requires a fee to enter and, upon completion, award Akira an item as well as a Rank up. While Akira's Rank is mostly unimportant, at certain parts of the game, he'll be forced to reach a certain Rank to continue. As such, every Tournament must eventually be cleared to complete the game, but the player is not rushed to do so until certain points of the story.
Tournaments consist of three battles each against NPCs that belong to one of the three Guard Teams. As they may be fought in multiple Tournaments, the game suggests that said NPCs are also ranking up themselves off-screen.
