Alter Ride

From Wikimon

Alter Ride (オルタライド Oruta Raido; Dub: Alternative Override, sometimes called simply Override), is a special ability in Digimon Liberator. It is a Digimon's innate power, the ability to rewrite the environment itself.[1]

It allows its user to rewrite the data of the world. Normally, this is used to rewrite cards, turning them into a new card that's more valuable for their current situation. Once changed, a card will retain its new form and can be used like any other card.

Alter Rides can be triggered by Digimon (including those possessing NPCs)[2], human players[3] and digital lifeforms[4], and they may trigger on their own or at will, depending on the users' control of the phenomenon.

Overview[edit]

Alter Ride is a power that Digimon born in Lacuna originally had. It can rewrite not only cards but also map information, and has the capacity to destroy the world. It was thought to have been completely neutralized as the protection system for Lacuna and cards was put in place, with Digimon having lost this power, but the appearance of Sam the Clown proved this to be wrong.[5]

Kazama Shoto's dataset became a massive Alter Ride program during his first fight against an NPC, Freezing Knight. This was caused by three triggers, which collided and caused an unintentional Alter Ride of Shoto's data:

  1. Coming into contact with Close, the core of the Unique Emblem.
  2. Encountering Maquinamon, a special construct fused from different data.
  3. Pteromon triggering an Alter Ride that changed Shoto's deck and the Situation Battle parameters.[1]

Due to his new powers, Shoto's hair tended to show red streaks under certain conditions, which had nothing to do with how his hair was generated or his Unique Emblem.[6] His hair also became fully green and glowed when he used the powers of the "will of the world", which manifested as Vortexdramon.[7]

Non-card usage[edit]
  • The first Alter Ride shown in the series was caused by Pteromon, who used it to rewrite Kazama Shoto's deck and the Situation Battle parameters during his battle against the NPC, Freezing Knight. Together with other factors (mentioned above), this caused an Alter Ride in Shoto's character data, turning him into a concentrated mass of the Alter Ride program.[1]
  • Close mentioned that Unchain had once overwritten any Digimon that they came across in E.G.G. into Maquinamon.[8] Apparently, they began doing it after extracting the miasma immunity from Yolkmon and copied it to Metatromon.[15].
  • Cool Boy planted Dalphomon with a trojan horse so when Metatromon absorbed it and evolved into Ex Maquinamon, it triggers an Alter Ride that forced Unchain to accept any duel requests against his will.[11]

Trivia[edit]

  • The series follows a pattern with Alter Rides when both the original and the new card are known: digital characters (both Digimon and digital lifeforms) override cards into new versions of the same card, while human characters override cards into entirely-different cards.
