Digicode (デジコード, Dejikōdo; Dub: Fractal Code) is a physical form that digital data can take. It resembles a long, coiling barcode strip.
Appearances[edit]
Anime[edit]
Digimon Frontier[edit]
All Digimon and the Digital World itself consist of Digicode. When a Digimon is defeated or suitably weakened, their Digicode is exposed and vulnerable to being absorbed, or "scanned", by somebody else. Once they are scanned, the Digimon reverts to a Digitama, which then usually returns to the Village of Beginnings.
Destroying the terrain of the Digital World itself releases that area's Digicode for scanning, but there are several ways of protecting against this. Certain areas have structures that lock the data in place and prevent it from being moved unless a "key" is found and destroyed, such as the beanstalk of the Mamemon Village and the golden beans at its top that unlock it.[1] It is also possible to scramble the Digicode by physically rearranging how a location is laid out, like what Shibayama Junpei did to the Akiba Market.[2]
When a human is in the Digital World, they also consist of Digicode and can be scanned in the same way as anything else. The only exception is Kimura Kouichi because, as revealed in "The Jumbled Data Plan! Defend Akiba Market", he did not actually physically enter the Digital World and is just a disembodied soul there.
Scanned Digicode can be used for various purposes. Throughout the series, Lucemon's servants aim to absorb the Digicode of all locations in the Digital World, to give Lucemon enough power to escape from the Dark Area. In "Takuya's Fusion Evolution, Aldamon's Explosive Attack!", Mercuremon uses Seraphimon's Digicode to evolve himself into Black Seraphimon.
The D-Scanners used by the Chosen Children are able to scan and store the Digicodes of defeated Digimon, and any other Digicodes they have absorbed, with the command "Digicode Scan" (デジコードスキャン, Dejikōdo sukyan; Dub: Fractal Code Digitize). Doing this purifies the data of Digimon who have been corrupted into evil by Cherubimon or Lucemon. They can also release stored Digicodes with the press of a button, which returns any stored location Digicode back to rebuild that location.[3]
When a Digimon or Chosen Child evolves or reverts from an evolution, they are briefly surrounded by a cocoon made out of Digicode. Also, the Chosen Children's process of Spirit Evolution involves summoning rings of Digicode on one hand, then touching their D-Scanner to the Digicode.
Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time[edit]
Kanbara Takuya uses his Digicode when using Spirit Evolution to become Aldamon.
Digimon Adventure tri. (dub)[edit]
In the English dub of Our Future, when Ordinemon doesn't De-digivolve back into Meicoomon, Izzy wonders if something had blocked her memories from being uploaded into her Fractal Code.[4]
Video Games[edit]
Digimon World X[edit]
DigiCode appears for a few moments after an enemy is defeated.
Virtual Pets[edit]
D-Scanner Toy[edit]
The three versions of the D-Scanner toy revolve around the gimmick of scanning real barcodes and reading them as Digicode, to collect items and Digimon and to progress in the game. In addition to the barcodes found on select Digital Monster Card Game cards, which produce that specific Digimon, any barcode can be scanned to generate an encounter in the D-Scanner.
