Digital World: Shambala
| |||||||
Digital World: Shambala (デジタルワールド・シャンバラ, Dejitaru Wārudo: Shanbara), also known as the Eastern Digital World (東方のデジタルワールド, Tōhō no Dejitaru Wārudo) or simply Shambala (シャンバラ, Shanbara), is a Digital World that exists on a different server to the Digital World ruled over by Yggdrasill or Digital World: Iliad ruled over by Homeros and is managed by the Tentei Hachibushu. It is a digital world consisting of a floating continent and small islands in the ocean of the internet. It is heavily influenced by data from the East Asia region in the real world, and the Digimon that inhabit it have undergone various evolutionary changes unique to Shambala to adapt to the environment.[1]
Many techniques and secret arts are passed down among the Digimon throughout Shambala, such as necromancy, Onmyōdō,[2] and kenjutsu.[3][4]
History[edit]
The host computer over Digital World Shambala is Kunlun. According to legend, by Kunlun's order, Susanoomon destroyed the system that existed since ancient times. Then, with the power of creation, he rewrote it into the current form of Shambala. Acting in place of Susanoomon, Shambala is managed by the Tentei Hachibushu, who were summoned by Kunlun.
It is said that the Shikyoju ("Four Perilous Beasts") have existed since the earliest times during the emergence of the Shambala.
Environment[edit]
Currently, only the area that is considered the center of Shambala can be observed. That area is made up of the Genshi Continent, Ashino Island, and Yomi, and has a unique ecosystem with different species of Digimon.
Notable locations are the mysterious Ogonkyo protected by sacred barriers,[5][6] the oceanic area of Ryushogu where water-dwelling Digimon live in peace,[7][8] and the vast mountainous area of Jakeizan inhabited by evil spirits.[9] There are also various ruins,[10] abandoned castles and mansions,[11][12] and beautiful bamboo grove regions spread throughout Shambala.[13]

Digimon New Century[edit]
Digimon Story: Time Stranger[edit]
When Yuki Dan/Yuki Kanan asks Kunlun who he is, he introduces himself as the host computer of a Digital World named "Shambala".
Virtual Pets[edit]
Digimon Pendulum COLOR[edit]
The Digimon Pendulum COLOR 6 Saiyu Warriors and the 7 Toho Braves are both set in this Digital World. 6 Saiyu Warriors depicts Digimon inhabitants of Genshi Continent, while 7 Toho Braves depicts those in Ashino Island.[14]
The July 2026 edition of V-Jump referred to these devices as depicting ecosystems derived from Journey to the West and Chinese mythology (referring to Saiyu Warriors), as well as from Japanese yokai and mythology (referring to Toho Braves).
TCG[edit]
Digimon Card Game[edit]
Various inhabitants of this Digital World are given the Shambala trait beginning with EX-12 Digital World Shambala, which includes Susanoomon and a number of the Tentei Hachibushu. Seiten Gokuwmon’s inclusion in EX-12 was highlighted in the July 2026 edition of V-Jump.
Genshi Continent and Ashino Island are represented with the Shambala-traited card, [EX12-074 Genshi Continent & Ashino Island]. This card, and other Shambala trait cards, are also given the SW trait (referring to the Pendulum COLOR 6 Saiyu Warriors) and the TB trait (referring to the Pendulum COLOR 7 Toho Braves).
Development[edit]
The "Eastern Digital World" was originally just part of the regular Digital World, but was later retconned to being its own Digital World. It is unclear when this retcon was officially put into place.
The "third Digital World" was first[citation needed] mentioned by Habu Kazumasa on Twitter in 2020, who mentioned he had been told by Bandai there was a third Digital World other than the regular one and Digital World: Iliad.[15] He later clarified that the third Digital World wasn't Witchelny, and even he had been confused and thought it was Witchelny when he was told about the third Digital World.[16] Five years later, Terriermon Assistant interviewed Hara Ryosuke about Digimon Story: Time Stranger, with Hara mentioning there were three Digital Worlds (regular, Illiad, and a third) and that information about the third one hadn't been publicly revealed yet.[17] Two months after this interview, Shambala was officially announced. The Digimon Web page detailing Shambala was designed by Shoyama Seihou, who also contributed the illustrations.[18]
Kobayashi Fumiya of PLEX oversaw the development of Shambala after discussions about a third Digital World began. New Digimon created for Digimon Liberator are available for raising in the Digimon Pendulum COLOR, Liberator being a project that Kobayashi Fumiya also oversees.[19]
Given the appearance of Kunlun alongside the other host computers in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, it’s likely the development for Shambala’s setting and concepts was happening simultaneously with the further development of Iliad’s setting for the game.
