⇨ Japanese Originally, the D-Reaper was a primitive program that was written in an era before Digimon were created. Its purpose—to, should the "world's" active bodies multiply to the point that they exceed the maximum acceptable parameters, erase the "world" in order to revert it to "nothingness"—was simple enough, but it is thought that it underwent an aberrant evolution of its own in response to the growth of the Network's society and the prolific evolution of the Digimon.
Having taken in a massive quantity of data, the D-Reaper has mounted an invasion not only of the Digital World, but of the Real World as well, in order to revert both to "nothingness." By learning from the data of Digimon and humans, it has become capable of creating a variety of activity forms known as the "ADRs," and of fighting by copying the skills of Digimon. Could it be that the depths of the Net which bore the D-Reaper have become linked to another world in which a literal Grim Reaper dwells?

The basic concept of the D-Reaper was devised by Chiaki J. Konaka, who wanted the antagonist of the final story arc of Digimon Tamers to be an entity that was neither human nor Digimon[1] as part of his broader thinking about the evolution of non-Digimon life forms in the Digital World.[2] The D-Reaper's ADRs and forms were designed, variously, by Watanabe Kenji, Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi and Aramaki Shinji;[1] this was the first occasion on which Watanabe was able to design a creature for the franchise without needing to take into account the possibility of producing physical toys of it.[3]
The D-Reaper is often characterized as Lovecraftian in design and nature, in no small part due to Konaka's reputation for drawing on the Cthulhu Mythos in his writing. Konaka credits Watanabe with making the D-Reaper's design "Cthulhu-esque".[4]
During the development of Tamers, Konaka wrote a timeline of developments in networks and artificial intelligence in both the Real and Digital Worlds as production reference material. It alludes to links between the D-Reaper and real-life computer science and networking milestones, including:[5]
- Reaper
The world's first antivirus program from the 1970s
- ECHELON
A mass surveillance apparatus program operated by the Five Eyes; described in the documentation as having a self-defense program that is theorized to be a "forerunner" of the D-Reaper
- Carnivore
An American email surveillance apparatus
- Tierra
A computer model that simulates evolutionary and ecological dynamics; a fictional anecdote describing an activation of Reaper within it, under similar circumstances to the D-Reaper in Tamers, is included
It is possible, but unconfirmed, that the D-Reaper was specifically based on one or more of these. The Reaper program in particular is a notable candidate due to both the name of the D-Reaper, and a mention in another of Konaka's reference pieces that the D-Reaper, like Reaper, originated in the 1970s.[6] (The program that the D-Reaper evolved from is indeed called "Reaper" depending on the source,[N 1] but the function of said program differs from that of the historical Reaper.)

Evolution[edit]

Appearances[edit]
The D-Reaper is an entity that originated as a primitive computer program designed to delete junk data from the Network. In response to the proliferation and evolution of Digimon, it underwent an aberrant evolution and became an existential threat to the Digital World. After Matsuda Takato's friends inadvertently brought it back with them from the Digital World, the D-Reaper Zone began to spread and engulf Tokyo, threatening the Real World as well.

Individual Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
The Chaos Land stage is set above a vortex that bears a resemblance to the D-Reaper.
Virtual Pets[edit]
Various ADRs appear as bosses in Versions 2 and 3 of the D-Power Digivice.
In Version 3, there is also a random encounter event in which the player attempts to break through a D-Reaper-like mass that is holding another Digimon hostage.
In the Digital Monster Card Game, "D-Reaper" is a Group property which appears on Digimon cards depicting the D-Reaper's forms and ADRs. All of the D-Reaper-related cards, except for Bo-103t Mother D-Reaper, debuted in the Digimon Tamers-themed Expansion Board 4.
There are eleven "D-Reaper" Group Digimon (the ADRs, the Mother D-Reaper and the Reaper), and two Option cards (the Reaper Program and the D-Reaper Zone) which have effects that target the "D-Reaper" group.
In the Digimon Card Game, "D-Reaper" is a Form characteristic which appears on Digimon cards depicting the D-Reaper's forms and ADRs. All of the D-Reaper related cards debuted in the Digimon Tamers-themed EX-02 Digital Hazard Theme Booster.
There are eleven "D-Reaper" Form cards: one Digitama card (the Mother D-Reaper), and ten Digimon cards (the nine ADRs and the Reaper). The D-Reaper cards have effects that revolve around EX2-007 Mother D-Reaper, which both empower the other D-Reaper cards while the Mother is in play, and aim to stack large numbers of EX2-046 ADR-02 Searchers underneath the Mother in order to bypass the play cost of EX2-055 Reaper.
