From Wikimon

Block 5 encompasses the sixth year of the game, spanning the following sets:

Cards from previous blocks reprinted in this era were also given the block icon.

The most notable visual distinctions on Block 5 cards are the changes to text formatting: the Once per Turn bubble was made red to prevent confusion with the purple location bubble, the inherited effect box on ACE cards was removed in cases where it would otherwise be empty, and a new Security effect box resembling option card formatting was implemented on certain Digimon cards that would otherwise have way too much text.

Mechanically, Block 5 introduces several new ways of physically arranging cards in play. The long-awaited implementation of Appmon brought with it the Link mechanic, an alternative to inherited effects which is immune to evolution base trashing (due to being plugged sideways into the stack rather than being a part of it) and confers static DP boosts to the linked stack along with its normal effects, but must obey strict validity rules or get trashed by a rules check. EX-09 introduces face-down evolution bases, which contain no information and can thus be used as a resource in a similar way to how integer counters are used in other games.

Block 5 card design reduced multicolor decks' reliance on generic memory boosts by providing archetype-specific memory boosts, such as Kuremi Detective Agency, or other types of search options that more directly generate value on their Delay effects, such as The Strongest Brothers. Furthermore, option cards released in block 5 and later began to explicitly include the raising area for color requirement skips, even in decks that don't interact with raising. A new timing, When Moving, was also introduced in EX-09, accelerating the game speed by increasing the amount of Ukkomon-style effects that can gain value before the main phase begins; When Moving effects would rapidly proliferate into almost every deck receiving support in the latter half of the block.

Block 5 concluded the run of dual-color Memory Boost options, and released the first three dual-color Training options, which are distinguished by their Security effect performing the search instead of directly placing the card in the battle area. Additionally, it featured a fully generic consistency option in Digital Gate Open, which can be used in any deck that gains value from duplicate Tamers in excess of what it can naturally play by effect.
