Baluchimon is based on the Paraceratherium (commonly known by the junior synonym Baluchitherium), an extinct genus of hornless rhinoceros-like animals that were the largest land mammals known to have ever existed. Unlike Skull Baluchimon (which was introduced in the Digimon franchise over a decade before Baluchimon), its body plan more closely resembles that of its real-world namesake, including the long neck, and stocky body and limb proportions.
According to concept art released on Digimon Web (pictured right), there were at least two early design concepts for Baluchimon that precede its final concept. Both of these designs also feature common Holy Beast-type design cues, such as Holy Rings, but otherwise totally differ from the final design. Both of these designs are still labeled "Baluchimon" on the concept art, suggesting that it was never renamed through the design process for at least these concepts.
- Left: A heavy-set, short-necked, tusked creature with a very large head, loosely resembling a hippopotamus or a boar. Its entire head is covered with a flat mask.[1]
- Right: A scrawny, giraffe-like creature with two sets of angelic wings.[1]
Commentary on the concept art indicates that the intent for Baluchimon was for its appearance to convey a solemn demeanor, befitting its role as a guardian of ruins. "K-shi" 「K氏」, a pseudonymous Digimon designer from PLEX who is credited with the initial concept sketches for the Pendulum Z II, comments that they are partial to the abandoned hippopotamus-like and giraffe-like concepts, and that they hope they can someday be salvaged as other Digimon.[1]
Another early concept sketch that features Baluchimon's final design also depicts a) Bakumon with an arrow pointing from it to Baluchimon, and b) a second arrow pointing from Baluchimon to the names of Mammon and Skull Baluchimon. This indicates that Baluchimon was originally conceived, at least in part, as an evolutionary relative of these Digimon. Baluchimon's design has several elements in common with Bakumon's design, such as its Holy Beast-type theming, emitted clouds, and loosely similar color scheme; commonalities can also be drawn between its and Mammon's armor designs, while Baluchimon and Skull Baluchimon have a namesake in common.
However, the Digimon Pendulum Z II Virus Busters model (Baluchimon's debut, and so far only, virtual pet appearance) does not feature any of these other Digimon, so aside from Skull Baluchimon (as a connection is drawn between it and Baluchimon in the Digimon Adventure: episode "Hikari, New Life") no evolutionary relationship has been established between these Digimon in any released Digimon media.
