The Piccolo Protocol refers to the act of ignoring "official" romanizations released by Bandai if the spelling makes little to no sense from a linguistic perspective. The prime example of this is Piccolomon, whose official released name is "Picklemon" which would be spelled with different katakana if it was referring to a brined cucumber rather than the Italian word for "small".

Notes

• All Digimon affected by the Protocol will have some sort of note under the Name tab:
  • Piccolomon, officially named Picklemon
  • Volcdramon, also translated as Volcdoramon
• Not all incorrect spelling requires a change. Some spellings can be passed off as stylistic choices, aka, trying to sound cool.
  • Examples of this would be Rize Greymon and Gryzmon. Rise Greymon and Grizzmon would be more correct, but because they are so blatantly trying to be hip like a sugary cereal mascot in the 90's by using alternate letters with the same spelling, it is acceptable even if it is a bit irritating.
• Some romanizations may be correct in the origin language, even if the katakana is incorrect for it.
  • Example: Chimairamon. Chimaira is one of several acceptable spellings of the mythological beast. However, the katakana matches the pronunciation and spelling "Chimera" instead (kimera rather than kimaira).
