Digimon Research Institute

The Digimon Research Institute (デジモン研究所, Dejimon Kenkyūjo) is an organization introduced in the guide book Digimon Pendulum Nature Spirits (V-Jump Books Digital Series), published by Shueisha on December 8, 1998. It was established to investigate the ecology of Digimon, and employs numerous researchers in addition to its four named members.[1]

Professor Pen Dulum[edit]
Professor Pen Dulum (ペン＝デュラム博士, Pen Dyuramu Hakase) is a world-famous scientist who researches Digimon. Although he heads the Institute, Monjiro, Marina, and Shin'ichiro carry out most of the research presented in the guide book. Pen Dulum generally assigns work to the three researchers and evaluates their reports.[1]
Professor Pen Dulum's name is a play on "pendulum".
Dejikawara Monjiro[edit]
Dejikawara Monjiro (出児瓦 文次郎, Dejikawara Monjirō) is a hot-blooded young man who tackles Digimon research head-on. He is energetic and theatrical in his demonstrations, but approaches the research itself seriously. His reports concern Gekomon, Tonosama Gekomon, Jyagamon, Starmon, and Triceramon, and he writes the Digimon's names on the reports by hand. Outside his assigned research, he also raises a Tortamon personally.[1]
Monjiro demonstrates the recommended Pendulum Actions in a manner themed after each Digimon: he sings a frog song loudly for Gekomon; dresses as a feudal lord and waves a folding fan for Tonosama Gekomon; dresses for the outdoors and mashes potatoes for Jyagamon; dresses as a boxer and strikes a punching bag for Starmon; and runs at full speed while holding the Pendulum for Triceramon.
Marina Joguretto[edit]
Marina Joguretto (マリナ＝ジョグレット, Marina Joguretto) is a somewhat clumsy girl who works earnestly at her research. She frequently takes the lead when introducing the Pendulum's functions and its Digimon. Marina explains that "performing a Pendulum" means shaking the device, and describes the action as a way of encouraging the Digimon and motivating it.[1]
Marina's surname is derived from "Jogress".
Her reports concern Otamamon, Tentomon, Tortamon, Gottsumon, and Piccolomon, the last of which she also raises personally. For their respective Pendulum Actions, she wears a frog-themed swimsuit and imitates swimming; makes a pun based on Tentomon sounding like "ten-to-mon" while shaking the device at least ten times; joins Monjiro in cheering as if they were at a sports day; performs a self-devised "Gottsumon Dance" by repeatedly raising and lowering her arms; and, after an experiment fails, waves her arms around in frustration.
Nikaido Shin'ichiro[edit]
Nikaido Shin'ichiro (二階堂 振一郎, Nikaidō Shin'ichirō) is a cool and intelligent researcher who acts as a leader to the others. He carries a laptop, and his collected data and reports are presented more systematically than those of the other two researchers, although one report misspells Atlur Kabuterimon's name.[1]
His reports concern Kuwagamon, Okuwamon, Kabuterimon, Atlur Kabuterimon, and Monochromon. For their respective Pendulum Actions, he dresses as a bartender and shakes the device like a cocktail shaker; imagines a stag beetle flapping its wings; attaches the device to a fencing foil and performs thrusts; dresses as a king and shakes it in a relaxed manner; and attaches it to a toothbrush while brushing his teeth after waking up.

Digimon Pendulum Nature Spirits (V-Jump Books Digital Series)[edit]
The Institute's researchers present information on the functions of the Digimon Pendulum 1.0 and the Digimon available in it. In particular, Monjiro, Marina, and Shin'ichiro conduct experiments intended to determine the Pendulum Actions required to produce a Mega Hit during training.[1]
The characters appear throughout the book in full-color illustrations accompanied by text rather than in a conventional manga. The character illustrations were drawn by Hajime Yoshida. Their demonstrations provide deliberately elaborate examples of how to shake the Pendulum at the pace or number of times required by each Digimon.
