During the production of Digimon Xros Wars, there was a request of a shark-like Digimon, which at the time there wasn't many besides Surfymon, which explains why Neptunemon was eventually redesigned for the series, losing its humanoid component during the process.

Trivia

Neptunemon was one of 6 Digimon that had their profiles changed after the earthquake followed by a tsunami in Tohoku, on March 3, 2011. The profiles were changed with mention of such catastrophes excluded, but were soon reverted back to normal. The others were Ancient Mermaimon, Caturamon, Minotaurmon Adult, Tactimon and Whamon Perfect.
