An Ultimate who existed only in the distant past, it is set at the opposite extreme to Ancient Garurumon as a being born from darkness. It rules over the destruction and annihilation of all existing or living things, and is feared as the "Deadly Dark Beast". Ancient Sphinxmon's abilities were later passed on to the "Mythical Beast" and "Demon Beast Digimon". Its Special Moves are a laser beam fired with a roar (Dark Blast), and the ultimate annihilation technique which completely envelops the opponent in the darkness of death (Necro Eclipse). Ancient Sphinxmon was one of the Legendary Warrior Ten whose spirit was reborn in the Human Spirit of Darkness to create Löwemon and the Beast Spirit of Darkness to create Kaiser Leomon.

Ancient Sphinxmon was a denizen of the Ancient Digital World and a servant of its king Pharaohmon. Mummymon apparently recognizes him. During "Pyramid", Ancient Sphinxmon launched a series of attacks where he turned humans into stone slabs after they failed to answer the riddles he asked them, leaving only their shoes behind. The slabs would then be used to construct a pyramid that summons Pharaohmon to enslave the entire world. Based on the size of the final pyramid, the number of victims are assumed to rank up to the hundreds or thousands.

Tsukiyono Ruli got involved with him when her friend, Kaoru, became a victim of the attacks, which led her and the rest to search for him close to cultural locations. Amanokawa Hiro and Gammamon finally found him after he turned a painter into stone, but it only ended in Hiro also being transformed, as well as Higashimitarai Kiyoshiro, who arrived soon afterwards. Gammamon and Jellymon went back to Ruli and told her what had happened, and then they went to ask Mummymon for help, who correctly deduced this was Ancient Sphinxmon's doing. Soon after, a massive but incomplete pyramid appeared in the sky, built with the stone slabs. Ruli flew on top of Airdramon to get close to it, and Ancient Sphinxmon appeared before them, explaining how the pyramid would bring Pharaohmon, the ruler of the Ancient Digital World, into the human world, thus turning it into said ancient world, which Ancient Sphinxmon considered superior to human civilization.

Angoramon Warp Evolved into Lamortmon to fight Ancient Sphinxmon, alongside the rest of the Digimon, but they were easily defeated by the Ultimate-level. Ruli tried to help Lamortmon, only for Ancient Sphinxmon to hit Airdramon, knocking Ruli out of the skies. Ancient Sphinxmon then went to turn Ruli into a stone slab, the capstone of the pyramid, but Lamortmon and Ruli refused to give up as they loved human culture and wished to learn more about it, which caused Lamortmon to Ultimate Evolve into Diarbbitmon for the first time. Diarrbitmon easily overpowered Ancient Sphinxmon, destroying his Dark Blast, but then Ancient Sphinxmon tried to drag him into the world of death with his Necro Eclipse. Diarrbitmon managed to break free and accidentally pushed Ancient Sphinxmon into the vortex, and was then unable to save him. With Ancient Sphinxmon dead, the stone slabs returned to their human forms and Pharaohmon did not Realize into the human world.
